Xavier Perez, rhp, Class of 2022
Commitment: Florida

Perez has long been on the national scene as a member of the Houston Banditos organization, appearing in tournaments since 2017 and a couple of showcases as well. The 2019 season has been the biggest for Perez in terms of the growth of his game as his metrics jumped across the board, but especially so on the mound. The Junior National Showcase set the scene for the rest of the summer for Perez as his fastball showed an uptick on the radar gun and continued to climb into the 15u WWBA where he topped out at 88 mph. While just a high school sophomore, the newly committed Gator has already proven himself as a consistent performer as he pounds the strike zone and misses plenty of bats along the way. His late, short biting slider is a true weapon pitch for him and his changeup continues to make big strides.

Outlook for the class:
Perez’s commitment marks the 12th in 2022 for Coach Kevin O’Sullivan and his staff and he’s the 6th commitment to fall within Perfect Game’s top 100 rankings. Texas isn’t typically a state Florida pulls from, which speaks to the abilities of Perez, though the Gators have now committed he and Houston Banditos teammate Cade Arrambide. The overall pitching crop in this class is as talented as it is deep and Perez will be a valuable piece to an already impressive haul for the Gators.

Jaxson Davis, rhp. Class of 2021
Commitment: Louisville

In not so shocking news, Louisville landed a physically impressive -yet projectable- player out of the Midwest who shows big tools on both sides of the ball. Standing at a long 6-foot-4, 205-pounds, Davis is listed as a primary righthanded pitcher but performed well at some of the bigger Perfect Game events this summer with the stick, using his length to generate leverage and drive the ball. He focused mostly on hitting during the 17u WWBA Championships and the results were loud, hitting .500 with a home run over six games before pulling two-way duty the following week at the 16u WWBA where he hit .385 and worked 88-92 mph on the mound. The upside on the mound is big for Davis, who also mixes a firm slider that works into the low-80s and has shown he can miss bats even when playing up an age group.

Outlook for the class: The 2021 crop for the Cardinals is a loaded one and could contend for the top class nationally when it’s all said and done. The combination of physical tools, the projection and the fact Davis is in-state makes his commitment a no brainer for Louisville and given the club’s track record of developing players, don’t be surprised if he continues to blossom moving forward.

Kaden Schiefelbein, rhp, Class of 2021
Commitment: Washington State

Schiefelbein will be heading from Arizona up to Washington State to play for Head Coach Brian Green and the Cougars are getting a talented righthander who features plenty of athleticism. At 6-foot-2, 170-pounds there’s lots of projection remaining until he makes it to Pullman and he’s already shown big signs of growth with his fastball throughout three stops last summer at Perfect Game events. From his first PG outing in March of 2019 to his next in July, Schiefelbein saw his top fastball jump from 85 mph to 87 mph before once again climbing the ladder in September during the Fall National Championships where he topped out at 89 mph. He does a nice job of filling the strike zone from a higher release point, a similar slot from which he releases a mid-70s breaker, and has proven capable of missing bats within the zone.

Outlook for the class: Schiefelbein (No. 447) is the second player ranked within the Perfect Game top 500 rankings where he joins California native Christian Zwahlen (No. 412) to form a nice duo atop the class. While both of the righthanders mentioned above hail from outside of Washington, the Cougars have done a nice job of grabbing in-state talent as well. The additional of Schiefelbein is big for the class as it gives them a strike throwing righthander who could just be scratching the surface of his potential.

Coulson Buchanan, rhp, Class of 2021
Commitment: Wofford

Over the course of his Perfect Game career, the newly minted Wofford commit has seen a steady rise in his fastball velocity and should have a couple more ticks left in him as he continues to physically mature. Listed at 5-foot-10, 170-pounds, Buchanan is no stranger to Perfect Game events and in 2019 logged 28.1 innings in tournaments, striking out 37 while sporting a 0.50 ERA. Thanks to a fast right arm and an over-the-top release point the Georgia native is able to power the fastball downhill to the lower third of the strike zone while running the pitch up to 89 mph as he did in Jupiter. From a similar slot he mixes both a 12-6 shaped curveball and a harder, two-plane slider for strikes while flashing a changeup for a complete arsenal with which he can keep hitters off balance.

Outlook for the class: Buchanan is the latest commitment for the Terriers who have appeared to set up shop in Georgia with a majority of the 2021 class coming from the Peach State. One of three prospects ranked in the top-500, Buchanan is a very nice pickup for Wofford as he has a proven track record of success and the trajectory of his arsenal continues to climb with virtually every tournament.

Hunter Caldwell, rhp, Class of 2021
Commitment: Texas State

Like other arms detailed here, Caldwell saw an impressive climb in his velocity from the start of the 2019 summer to the end of the fall, culminating in an impressive performance during the WWBA World Championships with Hunter Pence Baseball Academy. Caldwell opened the summer at the 16u South Invitational in early June working 78-84 mph and saw his peak velocity trend upward each of his next four Perfect Game appearances, eventually sitting 87-92 mph while in Jupiter. The strongly built 6-foot-2, 225-pound Caldwell utilizes his strength well and drives down the mound nicely, working his heater to either side of the plate with intent while mixing a 12-6 shaped curveball for strikes in the mid-70s. There’s definite swing-and-miss potential as he struck out 27 last season in 22 innings of work in Perfect Game events.

Outlook for the class:
The Bobcats already had a potential impact bat in their 2021 class with catcher Christopher Bernal and now they have a potential impact arm in Caldwell. Both Bernal (No. 171) and Caldwell (No. 257) rank within Perfect Game’s top 300 prospects and lead an eight-man class that could make an instant impact upon arriving on campus. The Liberty, Texas native is the third primary arm in the class and he’ll be an interesting follow given the gains he made in such a short period of time in 2019.

Cooper Kelly, ss, Class of 2022
Commitment: Kansas

The Jayhawks made a nice splash in-state for their 2022 class as they picked up shortstop Cooper Kelly, a top-10 player in the state and their first commitment in the ’22 crop. A lean and projectable 6-foot, 170-pounds, Kelly showed very well on both sides of the ball during the 2020 National Indoor Showcase, displaying the requisite tools that help project him to stay in the dirt at the next level. Despite just being a sophomore in high school Kelly exudes confidence in his defensive actions, showing soft hands and nice lateral agility to work through the ball while working from multiple release points on his throws across, accurately. He’s also a switch-hitter who handles the barrel well from both sides, utilizing a refined approach with the makings of big bat speed and an all fields approach.

Outlook for the class:
According to the Perfect Game website, Kelly is the first commitment in 2022 for Kansas but it’s a very good starting point for the group. Based off of his performance at the 15u WWBA where he hit .313 with the Royals Scout Team but also punched out 11 in eight innings, there’s two-way potential as he continues to develop moving forward. A switch-hitting shortstop from your home state is certainly a nice starting point for a class that the coaching staff will continue to grow throughout the summer.

Vincent Cervino

With a postseason run for the ages, the Oklahoma Sooners (43-23) took home the National Championship and naturally finish the 2026 season as our No. 1 team in the land.  It is the third national title for the Sooners, playing in their 12th CWS and making their fourth championship series appearance.  They add to previous national titles won in 1951 and 1994 and did it by taking the most difficult path of any team in this year’s tournament.  In the NCAA Tournament, Oklahoma took down national seeds, No. 2 Georgia Tech twice, No. 3 Georgia twice, No. 5 UNC twice, No. 7 Alabama and No. 15 Kansas twice.  This was the second time that head coach Skip Johnson has led the Sooners to the CWS Championship Series since 2022 and the first time he has taken home the crown.  The North Carolina Tarheels (54-14) was one win away from their first national title and finish...

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

"Wow" Swings Catch Eyes at 16u Elite

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

The New York native and primary shortstop topped out at 93 with the fastball, sitting comfortable in the 90-92 range. Corona paired it with a sharp and tight slider at 81-83, staying on the same plane until late. The pitch plays well already and the delivery is very athletic.
