MARIETTA, GA. – With spring right around the corner and the winter weather still being a factor, teams flocked to East Cobb yet again for another year of promising baseball. Teams battled it out early in the weekend in what was almost freezing temps in the morning but the baseball gods gave way to what turned out to be a beautiful Sunday of baseball.

In the Semifinals, 643 DP Cougars Hawkins battled it out against Five Star Lassitter. Will Brown got the start and threw an absolute gem as he went four innings and only gave up three hits. He did not give up a single run.

643 DP Cougars jumped ahead early as the scored in the bottom of the first. Melvin Blocker singled to lead off the inning and would ultimately go on to score and give them an early lead. Not another run was scored until the fifth inning when Five Star tied it up. Jordan Thompson singled and then went on to score via a base knock by Tyler Holmes.

The game eventually went into extra innings tied 1-1. After a couple of timely hits in the bottom of the eighth. The winning run was walked in and the 643 DP Cougars were on to the Championship game.

On the other side of the bracket, the East Cobb Astros took on the Meridian Panthers which was also a tight contest. Caleb Brown continued his solid weekend at the dish as he singled in the first. After some poor defensive play by East Cobb, Meridian had a quick 3-0 lead.

Ford Thompson got the start for Meridian and pitched masterfully. The southpaw threw four scoreless innings before East Cobb finally figured him out and started to put the barrel on the baseball.

Meridian had two timely errors in the top of the fifth that would ultimately bring the contest closer. Carson Dougherty singled and knocked in a run that jump started the Astros. In the very next inning, the Astros rallied and scored three more runs which would ultimately put them ahead. Dimitri Angelakos and Grayson Baldovin both tallied a hit in the inning. The East Cobb Astros won 6-5 and sent a solid Meridian Panthers team home.

In the Championship game, Tyler Bradford got the start for the Astros and pitched a great game. He only gave up one run in his three-inning outing and that put them on a fast track to a win. On the opposing side for 643 DP Cougars Hawkins, Eli Hardage entered in the first for relief and threw three great innings as he didn’t give up a run.

The Astros jumped out to an early three-run lead that was derived from some sloppy defensive play by 643 DP Cougars Hawkins. Jax Phillips and Camden Page both knocked in a run in the fifth and that would just about seal the deal for the Astros. Drew Sofield doubled late in the action as well that would be the final touches of a great weekend of baseball.

Astros are Clutch in 13u Major Title Game

Marietta, GA – The East Cobb Astros 13U Orange defeated 643 DP Cougars 13U Goershel by a score of 8-2 in the championship of the 2020 PG 13U 54/80 Spring Season Opener (Major). Both teams looked every part of a championship contender over the course of the weekend as clutch hitting from top to bottom for the Astros proved to be the difference.

Collecting 10 hits as a squad, the Astros had six different hitters produce an RBI in the game while also getting sound pitching from Jax Bishop, Cane Mehling, and Thomas Ferland. Bishop started the game pitching two innings and striking out four with a fastball up to an event-best 83 mph.

Jin Kasuya and Matt Dill each had extra-base hits for the East Cobb Astros with Dill and William Hamacher each had multiple hits in the contest.

The Astros jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and held that lead through three full innings. Putting up crooked numbers in both the fourth and fifth innings, the Astros extended their lead before relinquishing the shutout in the bottom of the fifth. They would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth, but the eight runs put up would wind up being more than enough for the Astros to take home the Spring Season Opener title.
