TBT Ballers Muscle Up 19 Runs in Title Game

SANFORD, Fla. – In what was a back-and-forth affair through the majority of the afternoon, the TBT Ballers eventually pulled away late against the Gulf Coast Monarchs to capture the PG 13u Florida Select Championship by a score of 19-10. The offense was loud in this one as the Ballers scored in every inning but one and totaled 20 hits on the afternoon en route to the championship victory.

Up and down the box score you can see the impressiveness of the at-bats that these kids took with eight out of 10 starters in the lineup recording at least three hits. Eventual MVP Alejandro Sardinas had a big day at the plate with three knocks, including a triple, and a team-high four RBI on the afternoon. What was perhaps most impressive was the approach of these hitters as the Ballers only recorded one offensive strikeout on the entire afternoon.

Danny Machado gave an inspired start on the mound, lasting 3 2/3 innings while giving up seven earned runs in the process. The bullpen was nails after Machado departed, as Elyjah Freeman and Luis Almeyda combined for two shutout innings before Nick Diaz came into the game. Diaz allowed three runs to score in the bottom half of the sixth but pitched a peerless seventh inning to close out the game.

One of the stronger performances leading up to the championship game was lefty Michael Torres who tossed a gem in the quarterfinals against Elite Squad. Torres dazzled with 5 2/3 innings of shutout baseball coupled with eleven strikeouts on the afternoon. He ran his fastball up to 78 mph and already has some impressive pitchability as Coach Alan Sharkey described.

“Torres is an electric lefty,” said Sharkey. “(He) throws all three pitches, changeup, curveball, fastball, for strikes. Pounds the zone in and away. At this level, you’re going to have a lot of success doing that. He pitches with intensity.”

The TBT Ballers entered this loaded tournament with the No. 3 ranking at the 13u level and No. 1 in the state of Florida. The Ballers did nothing to dissuade that lofty ranking as their potent offense worked wonders for them, especially in the playoffs. The offense coupled with the impressive pitching and overall defense makes for a very well-rounded squad that will be dangerous as the summer approached.

“All around, it was a team win,” said Coach Sharkey. “We brought some guys to help us out, and our solid core did their job. We swung the bat well in key situations. Honestly for us, it’s about getting better and helping these guys with their fundamentals and with respecting the game. We just want to work hard. Every one of these kids practices four or five times a week.”

Sardinas was named MVP after a great weekend of offensive performance where he batted .563 with an OPS of 1.424 that included two triples on the weekend. Gulf Coast’s Johnny King was named MV-Pitcher after a strong performance of his own where he tossed 4 2/3 innings of one-hit baseball while striking out four batters.

West Pines Cobras Sneak By North Broward Predators For 12u Title

Two runs in the top of the sixth inning gave the West Pines Cobras a 7-6 lead over the North Broward Predators, a score that they would go on to win by in the bottom half of the inning.

Rhyss Rojas started the inning with a double for West Pines, Anthony Sanchez followed with a double of his own to score Rojas, and Julius Rodriguez singled to score Sanchez to take the lead for good.

Jesiah Andrade was named the MVP of the tournament for North Broward. Andrade took West Pines deep in the championship game and walked twice in the contest as well to keep his team in the game.

Miguel Delgado put together a great performance on the mound for West Pines in the team’s semifinal game, tossing 4 2/3 innings and striking out three while only allowing one run in a 3-1 win over Florida Xtreme. Delgado was named the MVPitcher of the tournament for his effort.

Tampa Elite Crowned in 11u

Three runs in the first inning and five in both the third and fifth were more than enough for Tampa Elite to earn a championship in the 11u division of the 2020 PG Florida Select Championship.

Tampa Elite had five hitters with multiple base hits in the championship game, including Christian Ramos Jr, who was named the MVP of the tournament. Ramos had two hits and four RBI in the championship game, while walking once as well.

Diamond Elite-Wilson Takes Care Of Business in 10u Division

Diamond Elite-Wilson left no doubt on Sunday in the 10u age division of the 2020 PG Florida Select Championship, scoring one run in the first and nine in the second to wrap up a 10-2, run-rule victory over the Tampa Phenoms.

Tampa scored its two runs to take a 2-1 lead after an inning and a half, but the nine-run response in the bottom of the inning was more than enough for Diamond Elite-Wilson to take the weekend crown.

Christian (Kiki) Mejias had a hit and three RBI in the championship game for Diamond Elite-Wilson. It was the end to a great tournament for Mejias, who was named the MVP of the tournament.

Mason Stout was a big reason why Diamond Elite-Wilson got to the championship game, tossing four innings in the semifinal matchup against PBA Legends, striking out six and allowing just one run.

Shock Prime 9u Outlasts Cobras

Clean innings were hard to come by in the championship game of the 9u age division at the 2020 PG Florida Select Championship.

Shock Prime 9u ended up with a 10-8 victory over Cobras, while scoring at least one run each of the five times they came to bat.

Ronald 'Trey' James III got things started for Shock Prime in the bottom of the first inning, leading it off with a single and then stealing both second and third base before coming around to score on a wild pitch.

James III had two hits in the game.

Cruz Guzman, who hit right behind James III in the Shock Prime lineup, was named the MVP of the tournament. Guzman had a double, an RBI, and two walks in the championship game, while also throwing 1 2/3 innings on the mound.
