Fall Champs: Day 4 Scout Notes

PG Underclass Fall National Championship: Daily Leaders | Day 1 Scout Notes | Day 2 Scout Notes | Day 3 Scout Notes

The final day of the PG Fall Underclass National Championship brought humidity and heated battles for four teams that deservedly advanced their way to Monday. GBG Marucci Navy 2021 advanced to the championship game over Southern California Bombers 2021 in what was a tight ballgame up until the final inning.

In that game uncommitted third baseman Oskar Stark (2021, Woodland Hills, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a walk and a double and is an interesting follow with his large athletic frame and present athleticism. Stark uses a narrow, upright stance with a lower handset and a high leg kick trigger. His weight shift lunges forward with his trigger and he stays relatively quiet into his load. He gets a large upper body coil as he heads back into his load and his front side turns closed and creates tension with his lower half. As he starts his swing, he slightly gets taller on his back side and his lower half does not activate as much as it could, suggesting that there’s more power potential left to be unlocked in Stark’s swing.

At the hot corner he possesses solid feel for the position and most definitely looks the part. He finished the tournament hitting .438 with a 1.147 OPS through seven games. Stark checks off a ton of boxes with his present projectables and he should be a high follow moving forward.

After being named to the top prospect list at the SoCal Prospect showcase in San Diego, Southern California Bomber’s shortstop Nathan Martinez (2021, Murrieta, Calif.)continued to impress coaches and scouts with his fluidity at short and strong bat speed at the plate. Martinez has nice soft hands and makes good first step reads off the bat. He looks comfortable on the run into either hole or on slow rollers and he shows an ability to be accurate across the diamond from multiple slots.

At the plate, he uses an open, slightly back-loaded stance with a pre-pitch barrel coil that he unloads through the zone at launch. Martinez has a tendency to collapse his backside and allow his head to pull out of his swing, which leads his barrel to follow along with it. When he’s able to stay up the middle and work linear through the box with his mid leg kick, he has the potential to be dangerous to all fields. Martinez also showcased some maturity and discipline at the plate, working a hard-fought walk late in the game. Martinez’s bat speed feel for the game, and fluidity in the field, suggest that he’ll take large strides at Vista Murrieta High School this season. It should also be noted that he did pitch late in the ball game and sat around 78-81 mph.

Consistent contact from Adam Moser (2021, Peoria, Ariz.) was on display as AZ Athletics 2021 Founders Club took on the So Cal Birds in semifinal play. His middle-of-the-field approach and level swing plane worked in his favor, going 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI. He laced two balls for hits, one going for a double to left field in the top of the fifth inning that broke the game open by scoring three runs. He also showed good actions and awareness in the infield with average arm strength. As Moser matures into his frame, he projects to get stronger and could be a player to make a big jump in ability.

Griffin Stark (2021, West Hills, Calif.) took the mound and earned the win for GBG Marucci Navy 2021. The lean framed righthanded pitcher uses a high three-quarters slot with a loose arm action, a long arm circle in the back and he repeated well as he filled up the zone with his fastball. He flashed an above average curveball that had good, late break. He threw a complete game shutout, allowing four hits while striking out five. Stark has developing arm strength and should add more velocity over the next two years at Chaminade College Preparatory.
