14u PG Series Classic Quick Hits

The starting pitcher in game one for Coastal was lefty Austin Schrowe (2023, Cape Coral, Fla.). Schrowe was very dominant in his short outing, throwing 1 /1/3 innings allowing only one hit and striking out three. His fastball was up to 82 mph and was able to throw it with good command. His sharp-breaking curveball was at 74 mph and received a lot of swing and misses. Schrowe has a slow windup with a high leg kick and has a whipping arm action when he delivers the ball to the plate. Keep your eyes open for Schrowe as he will throw again later in the week.

Wyatt Brockman (2023, Niangua, Mo.) started behind the plate for Mid West and had a solid day. Brockman has a big frame at 6-foot, 175-pounds and shows good athleticism while he catches. He blocks the ball well and has a strong arm as he threw out a runner early in the game. He made loud contact all day, finding consistent barrels. Brockman is a tough out as he hits good pitches and spoils pitchers’ pitches. Brockman went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Starting at shortstop for Bahamas was Ryan Reckley (2023, Nassau, Bahamas) and he was smooth all day. He is a very good shortstop making plays look very easy. He has quick, fast hands and showed a strong arm in the making. He is very athletic at 5-foot-7, 150-pounds and it shows while he plays defense. At the plate, Reckley has a sweet swing and is a line drive hitter with good pull-side pop. He also has good speed as he stole a couple bases on Sunday. Reckley went 3-for-5 with four runs scored, one double and one RBI on the day.

Another player that stood out for Bahamas was catcher Paris Johnson (2023, Bahamas) Johnson had a big day going 6-for-8 with five RBI, one double and two runs scored. Johnson has a big, athletic frame and looked solid at every position playing first, catcher and pitching two innings. He has a slightly open stance with good pop to all fields as he looks to elevate the ball. On the mound, Johnson threw two innings and struck out four. Johnson is a player you want to watch hit over the next couple of days.

Jacksenio De La Rosa (2023, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) started at first base in game one and center field for game two and looked comfortable at both. De la Rosa has a large frame with good present strength already at 6-foot-1, 170-pounds. He swings the bat well as he looks for pitches over the plate he can drive early in counts. He stands in the righthanded batters box with a slightly open stance and has strong hands. He showed good athleticism playing defense as he was smooth at first and also made a diving play in center. De La Rosa went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI and one double.

Game two starting pitcher for Central was righthander Minjun Seo (2023, Frisco, Texas). Seo showed a fastball with good life at 84 mph which he had good command with. He was able to throw his fastball for strikes and got ahead of hitters and that is when he would go to his tight-breaking curveball at 65 mph. He also went to his changeup, which was 70 mph when he was ahead of hitters. Seo was able to throw all three pitches for strikes and that is what made him so effective. Seo threw two innings allowing one run and striking out one while eliciting weak contact.

The shortstop for Central was Ayden Mansfield (2022, Las Vegas, Nev.). Mansfield showed some really good talent both defensively and offensively. He made plays look easy at short and has a solid arm. At the plate Mansfield swings at good pitches and as a smooth, aggressive swing. He looks to drive the ball into the gaps and has good pop. Mansfield went 4-for-5 scoring thee runs, hitting a double and driving in one run. Mansfield will be a fun player to watch this week as he will try to continue his domination from day one.

Christopher Carroll (2023, Miami, Fla.) had himself a day all over the field playing good defense, hitting and pitching well. Carroll showed some serious athleticism as he can play every position in the infield and makes plays at short look easy. He has very good instincts with good hands and a strong arm. At the plate, Carroll is a very tough out as he does not get cheated and does not miss barrels. Carroll went 3-for-3 on the day with three runs scored, two RBI, one double and three walks. Also making an appearance on the mound, Carroll threw three innings allowing only one hit and striking out four.

Deep South slid past Puerto Rico in the title game of the Freshman PG Series Classic, 5-1. Considering their rough start in pool play, going 0-3, Deep South came out relentless in the playoffs defeating opponents in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds and closed the feat with a championship victory against Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico was up first on the board in the bottom of the first scoring their single run in the game that came from Jose Torres Rivera (2022, Puerto Rico).  Deep South doubled that shortly after in the top of the second with runs scored by Yoel Tejeda Jr (2022, Davie, Fla.) and Xavier Vergne (2022, Miramar, Fla.). We have another update to the National Top-50 after two weeks of even more games being played in the southern states along with seasons just starting to kick off across the country. We’re quickly approaching another stellar high school event, the NHSI in Cary, and with that will come even more movement in these rankings. St. John Bosco (CA) continues to hold firm at the No. 1 position after a 4-0 start to their season. Venice (FL) has been rolling throughout the early portion of the year and jumps up to No. 2 in the country. One of the biggest movers in this update is The Bennett School (TX) jumping from unranked to No. 8 in the country after beating a handful of top ranked programs to start the year. Some other big movers inside the top-10 are Barbe (LA), who jumps from No. 18 to No. 5 in this update as well as Aledo (TX) who jumps from No. 20 to No. 9. The rest of the top-10...

College Players of the Week: March 17

March 17th Perfect Game/Player of the Week: Vahn Lackey, C, Georgia Tech The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (17-3) came into the season with the highest external expectations in decades based on the anticipation of their offensive potential. To this point they have not only met those lofty expectations, but twenty games in they may have exceeded them. While there are plenty of high-level prospects up and down the lineup, with all that star power Vahn Lackey has stood out. Sure to be one of the first catchers selected in this year’s MLB Draft with his comprehensive skillset, he projects well as an everyday backstop at the next level. However, his overall athleticism stands out as we saw this week when he had a game where he played every defensive position on the field except pitcher. At the plate over four games including a series victory at Clemson last week, he went 9 for 15, scoring...

PG Draft: Under the Radar Preps As the spring season gets underway, the showcase circuit and early high-level tournaments have already provided our scouts with some intriguing first looks at this year’s crop of prospects. At the same time, we’ve been tracking the buzz among team evaluators, listening closely to the names that keep coming up in conversations and the players clubs are making sure they get eyes on this spring. Every year, a handful of prospects quietly slip beneath the radar during the fall and winter months, only to reemerge once the games start counting again. Sometimes it’s the result of a productive offseason in the weight room, a noticeable jump in velocity, or a step forward in skill development. Other times, it’s simply a player finally getting the opportunity and the stage to show what’s been building behind the scenes. The spring has a...

March 10 Perfect Game/Player of the Week:  Lorenzo Carrier, OF, Pitt  The Pitt Panthers (12-2) are off to one of the best starts in recent program history and their offense has performed as one of the best in the country.  For the season, they are averaging almost 12-runs per game and on their recent trip to the West Coast, Lorenzo Carrier went on the kind of hot streak that is hard to comprehend.  The 6-5/215 senior from Bear, DE was a one-man wrecking crew in their 4-wins last week, starting with the fact that he reached base safely in 17 of his 19 trips to the plate.  He collected 13 hits in 14 official at-bats, scoring 10 runs, with 4 walks, 2 triples, 4 home runs and he drove in an insane 19-runs.  Carrier has refined his approach, simplified his bat path and is creating massive power that has him putting up career numbers.  For the season, he is...

Collegiate Player Report Database While there will not be any new faces in this weeks Top 25, there is quite a bit of shakeup as the season, somehow, becomes even more unpredictable.  There were several teams in the poll that dropped weekend series and, in some cases, registered losing records in the last seven days.  There is sure to be more chaos this week as virtually every conference starts league play and the race for regular season titles begins.  The UCLA Bruins (13-2) remain No. 1 as their sizzling hot bats led the way to a perfect (4-0) week and they swept their first Big Ten series of the year.  As one of only two remaining undefeated teams in the nation, the Texas Longhorns (15-0) jump to No. 2 before they open SEC play this weekend in Austin.  No. 3 Georgia Tech and No. 4 Mississippi State both (14-2) hold their spots in the poll after both dropped a...
