14u Northeast: Day 2 Scout Notes

James Asmus (2022, New Hyde Park, N.Y.), a 6-foot, 200-pound first basemen and outfielder, followed up his day one performance with another good day at the plate. In Team Steel Gold’s day two doubleheader, Asmus was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs, including a long single off the right centerfield wall in the top of the seventh against the Connecticut Wolfpack. Asmus has a smooth and compact swing with an advanced approach at the plate and easy power. He has great balance that allows him to let the ball travel, allowing him to handle the off speed stuff very well for his age.

James Griffin (2023, Shavertown, Pa.), a 6-foot, 190-pound outfielder and righthanded pitcher, drew the start for Team Beast United in their first game on Saturday. Griffin threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing only one walk and striking out four before being removed after 35 pitches, most likely to preserve the ability to come back in the playoffs. He had electric stuff, his fastball sitting in the low-80s and topping out at 83 mph. His heater was paired with an 11-to-5 breaking ball with good spin and late break. Griffin showed the ability to change speeds with his breaking ball and use it as a strike pitch, as well as a swing and miss offering. When paired with the late life on his fastball it makes for a tough at bat for any hitter at this age. Griffin had three more quality at-bats resulting in a 1-for-3 day with a double and an RBI, proving impressive again with his approach.

Allen Hernandez (2023, Lodi, N.J.), a 6-foot-1, 205-pound righthanded pitcher, was impressive in a five-inning relief appearance for the AD Titans against a very good Team Beast United lineup. He has a smooth, athletic delivery with a high leg lift and a three-quarters arm slot that allows him to create deception against opposing hitters. Hernandez’ fastball sat in the low-80s for most of the outing, topping out at 86 mph with late arm side run. Pitching off his fastball, he mixed in a low-70s breaking ball with good but loose spin to keep hitters honest. Hernandez is a good competitor with a bulldog mentality on the mound, and looks to be a prospect in the 2023 class to watch closely.

Kyle Popko (2022, Saint James, N.Y.), a 6-foot, 170-pound righthanded pitcher, showed up in a big way for Team Beast United in game two on Saturday. Popka threw a six-inning complete game on 62 pitches, filling up the strike zone with his mid-70s fastball and touching 79 mph on the radar gun. Popko has a low effort delivery and a long, fast arm circle that looks to have plenty of room to add velocity as he fills out. He does a good job mixing pitches while using two variations of his breaking ball. At the plate, Popko helped himself, going 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

Dariel Osoria (2022, Bronx, N.Y.), a 6-foot, 170-pound third baseman, paced the Bronx Bombers 14u offense in game one today, going 2-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Osoria is an athletic body guy who looks the part and pairs his sure hands with above average arm strength that carries the ball across the diamond. At the plate he has a very patient and disciplined approach, using his quick, strong hands to attack the ball deep. Osoria generates easy power to all fields and is a long ball threat every time he enters the box.

Jayden Asencio (2022, Central Islip, N.Y.), a 5-foot-7, 145-pound catcher, has put on a catching clinic over the first two days of the event. He is very athletic behind the plate with advanced receiving skills and great footwork. Asencio has good arm strength and accuracy but is most impressive with his quick release. A lefthanded hitter, he starts in a balanced crouch and stays linear through his swing. He uses his entire body well,  and when his body matures he should be able to generate more power.
