15u Northeast: Day 1 Scout Notes

Photo: Perfect Game USA

The 2019 WWBA 15U Northeast National Championship showcased the potential of an immense amount of young talent hoping to pave their way the next level. Day one of the championship featured young players who came to play, standing out among the crowd and pushing themselves to the forefront of scouting conversation.

Nicholas Vega (2021, Bronx, NY) a 6-foot-3, 190-pound outfielder, got off to a quick start on Friday, going 4-for-6. Vega concluded the day with a double, an opposite field home run, five runs, and five RBI to lead the NY Gothams 15u (22) to an early 2-0 record. A Perfect Game Top 1000 ranked player in the country for the class of 2021, Vega was fun to watch. He brings great arm strength with carry and the ability to track the ball well in the outfield. Vega is an intimidating presence at the plate with his large and athletic frame, starting from a slightly open crouched stance. Vega has tremendous balance from his front knee load through a balance swing. The ball jumps off Vega’s bat, as he showed easy big-time pop to all fields. As Vega fills out the frame, he looks to be a big power corner outfielder at the next level.

Michael Sirota (2021, Queens, NY) a 6-foot-1, 170-pound shortstop and outfielder, comes into the WWBA Northeast National Championship ranked 30th overall in the state of New York for the 2021 graduating class. Sirota certainly didn’t do anything to hurt his reputation on day one. Sirota finished Friday’s doubleheader 6-for-7 with two doubles, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Spending some time at both shortstop and center field for the NY Gothams 15u (22), Sirota has great arm strength and serves as a leader defensively. He has advanced baseball awareness and a real feel for the game. Sirota stands tall at the plate and carries his hands high into the launch position and aggressively attacks the baseball with a short compact level swing. He is a line drive hitter with gap to gap power. As Sirota puts some muscle on the long frame and adds a little lift to his swing, those line drives may start to leave the park.

Paul Mata (2021, Rockville Centre, NY) a 5-foot-9, 150-pound outfielder, led his Long Island Ducks to a 6-0 win against the Rockland Titanium Drillers in their opening game. Hitting at the top of the order, Mata was on base consistently, ending the game 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored, and an RBI. Mata uses his speed well, to create pressure on the bases as well as tracking balls in the outfield. At the plate he starts with a high hand position and uses a slight hand hitch for his loading mechanism, attacking the baseball with a short stroke. Mata uses his hands well and doesn’t have a lot of wasted movement, so he has a very repeatable swing and handles the wood bat with little trouble.

Jacob Steinmetz (2021, Woodmere, NY) a 6-foot-3, 175-pound righthanded pitcher, showed some electric stuff in a short two inning appearance today against Team Beast 2022. Although Steinmetz had some early command issues, he ran it up to 85 mph on the radar gun with heavy sink and showed the makings of a big-time slider with plus spin and good depth. Steinmetz is long, lean and has all kinds of room to add strength and speed. If he is able to put together some consistency with his mechanics and develops a little better feel for his movement, Steinmetz could be a front-line guy at the next level.

Nick Murphy (2021, West Nyack, NY) a 6-foot, 175-pound right-handed pitcher, started the opening game on the mound against a quality Long Island Ducks team. Murphy threw five innings in a losing effort but worked in the low 80s with his fastball, showing arm side run and flashes of dominating secondary stuff. Murphy is a good athlete that throws from a low three-quarters quarter arm slot with a short, quick arm circle. He alternated between a slow breaking ball in the mid-60s and a sharper and shorter version in the low-70s that has good tight spin and late action. Murphy also went 2-for-3 at the plate hitting in the cleanup spot and played two innings at second base to finish the game.

Alexander Rosario (2021, Astoria, NY) a 5-foot-11, 150-pound infielder and right-handed pitcher, a follow in the Perfect Game 2021 ranking, started game one of pool play today for the NY Gothams 15u (22). Rosario threw four innings, sitting in the low-80s and topping out at 83 mph with his fastball. He mixed in a low-70s breaking ball with good spin and late depth at the plate. Rosario throws exclusively from the stretch but manages to create good rhythm and consistent mechanics. Rosario also batted in the middle of the lineup, where he was 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double and two runs scored. He finished the game at shortstop, where he showed good range and a strong accurate throwing arm.

Philip D’Aguanno (2021, Bethpage, NY) a 5-foot-11, 165-pound righthanded pitcher, threw a four-inning shutout on Friday, allowing only two hits while striking out eight. He pitched in the high-70s with his fastball, topping out at 80 mph to go along with a high-60s breaking ball. D’Aguanno pitches from a high three-quarters arm slot, tossing a heavy ball that hitters have trouble elevating. He is a good athlete that can repeat his delivery consistently, and when he works downhill D’Aguanno has some late sinking action at the plate. D’Aguanno batted third for his Bethpage Eagles 15u team, adding a 1-for-3 effort at the plate, recording two RBIs.

TBT Phillies Scout run rules for second straight MLK East Championship The 14U TBT Phillies Scout Team overtook A3 Academy Futures 14-6 in the final game to win their second straight 2026 MLK East Championship. Though the skies were blue and the sun was out in Fort Myers, Florida, the air was very chilly. The wind whipped through the palm trees as players, parents and friends piled into the 5-Plex Player Development Complex bundled up in blankets, hoodies and beanies.  The A3 Academy Futures were first up to bat - and the TBT Phillies struggled through the first frame. The first run came across on a balk; the second came soon after off a double from Gabriel Messing. “I was surprised that they scored right away off the jump,” Kingston George said, an outfielder for TBT Phillies Scout and this year’s MVP of the 14U East MLK championship. “We were kind of quiet...
