FTB Nugent claims 14u title

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Undefeated FTB-Nugent outshined opponents this weekend taking home the 2019 PG 14u World Series Qualifier Championship. FTB overcame the Florida Burn 2023 Platinum in the title game by a score of 5-1.

Danny Sakowski (2023, Fleming Island, Fla.) did his thing on the mound allowing only four hits and a walk striking out eight in his complete seven-inning game. The lefthander earned MV-Pitcher for his strong performance in the championship game. FTB-Nugent opened the tournament with a shutout victory over SWFL 14u by a score of 14-0. 

The tournament’s MVP, Benton Edwards (2022, Glennville, Ga.) went 1-for-2 with a double and three RBIs in the opening victory. The righthander threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing only a hit and striking out eight batters. Edwards also led the way in the semifinals going 4-for-5 with a double and another three RBIs, giving him nine runs batted in at the PG 14u World Series Qualifier.

As for Florida Platinum, Abel Albarran (2023, Arcadia, Fla.) pitched a solid three innings giving up four hits, striking out two, and holding FTB to only one run. In the bottom of the fourth, Sammy Mummau (2023, Palm Harbor, Fla.) led the inning off with a double to CF and scoring the burns only run after Nevin Hernandez hit a sac fly to right field.

The Florida Burn Platinum were looking for a late game comeback as they were only down a run in the fifth inning before FTB scored three runs in the top of the sixth from two walks and two errors. The errors would then give FTB a 5-1 lead that they would hold onto to win the title and a spot in the 2019 Perfect Game 14u World Series to be held July 18-22 in Sanford, Fla.
