2018 17u PG Tournament All-American Team

With another tournament season in the books for the 2018 calendar year, we look back to see who the top performers were at PG core events with the annual PG Tournament All-American Teams by age division, starting with the 17u players. Of the honorees on the first and second teams, five players played at Petco Park last August as PG All-Americans: Anthony Volpe, Tyler Callihan, Logan Tanner, Cade Doughty and Jerrion Ealy. Ealy, a Mississippi native, was the only PG All-American to repeat from last year’s 16u honorees. Kurtis Byrne, Troy Schreffler, Danny Rodriguez, Chandler Murphy and Mason Barnett were also 16u PG Tournament All-Americans from the 2017 event season.

There were 223 combined All-Tournament Team selections between the first and second teams while infielder Brennan Milone and lefthanded pitcher Kirby Connell led the way with nine selections each. There were 10 MVP/MV-Pitcher awards handed out and some of the notable selections were Joshua Rivera, co-MVP of the WWBA World Championship, Lane Watkins, MV-Pitcher of 17u WWBA National Championship, and Caeden Trenkle and Ethan Cloyd, co-MVPs of the 17u PG World Series.

Byrne was named the Player of the Year following a searing 2018 campaign. He had one of the more well balanced seasons out of anyone on the list including a 1.354 OPS and three home runs in 57 plate appearances, along with countless 100-plus mph exit velocities at big events. Kale Davis was named the Pitcher of the Year as no other pitcher in the country did more than he did in only 16 innings. This included a perfect game in the 17u WWBA playoffs while allowing just four hits and no earned runs with a K/7 of 12.250.

Player of the Year: Kurtis Byrne, St. Louis Pirates/Elite Baseball Training
Pitcher of the Year: Kale Davis, Sticks Baseball Academy
