The University of Florida and the USA Baseball 18u team scrimmaged at Port Charlotte Sports Park, home of the Tampa Bay Rays Class-A affiliate Stone Crabs, as the Gators completed their final scrimmage of the fall and USA Baseball is wrapping up it’s preparation for the World Cup. Similar to recent years, the Florida Gators don’t just rebuild their roster but they reload and head into 2019 joining a small handful of teams expected to be favorites for the College World Series title. Sunday provided a good look at some of the veteran contributors in the lineup while also showcasing a lot of new blood for the Gators.

After excelling as a freshman Tommy Mace looks to start the season out in the weekend rotation and certainly looks the part as one of the top 2020 draft prospects roughly a year and a half out. The 6-foot-6 sophomore was excellent over three innings, retiring nine out of 10 batters faced and fitting his reputation of pounding the strike zone pretty much to a tee. The righthander worked almost exclusively 91-94 mph with very good sinking life low in the zone and the delivery is easy, clean, and loose with excellent extension toward the plate. The combination of his extension and life allows for a good amount of swing-and-miss within the strike zone on the fastball. The breaking ball has also made strides in the mid- to upper-80s, and though it’s a bit of a tweener, it has all the makings of a plus pitch while his feel for a split-changeup in the upper-80s is a very good third pitch that allows for another weapon against lefthanded hitters.

The veterans in the middle of the lineup look poised to anchor the Gators from an offensive standpoint and include Wil Dalton, Nelson Maldonado, and Austin Langworthy.
