Fall Instructional League Week 3 Recap

We have hit the halfway point of the fall instructional league and we can't help but wonder where the time has gone. We would like to thank Luther College Head Coach Bryan Nikkel and staff for helping run an awesome camp on Saturday in Decorah. This next weekend, we head back to the Des Moines Metro Area as Simpson College in Indianola plays host to our camp and games.

Below is a quick recap and some top perfomances from over the weekend. A season leaderboard is also provided below.

Blackhawks 9  Blue Devils 3

Garrett Heying (2023, Dickens, IA) really stepped up and played well above his age in game #1 for his team at Luther College. Garrett had a game high 2 hits and pitched 2 shut out innings while picking up the win on the mound. He also led hit team in hits while turning in a 2-3 line at the plate. Garrett is a primary catcher and has filled in very well catching older kids during this league.

Dane Churchman (2020, Ankeny, IA) picked up a game high 3 RBI and a single in 4 AB. Interestingly though, none of Dane's RBI came on his base hit single. He reached twice on errors in the game. Dane also added a run scored to help his team to a 9-3 victory.

Logan McDermott (2020, Cedar Rapids, IA) led the way on the mound for the Blue Devils in the losing effort. McDermott pitched 3 innings of 0 earned run baseball to improve his ERA to 1.20 in 6 innings pitched this season. He was also able to add an RBI for his team offensively. McDermott has looked really good on the mound this season and has shown good control.

Carter Petsche (2019, Epworth, IA) was 1-2 on the game with a triple in the losing effort for the Blue Devils. Pertsche added a walk as well. Petsche is a primary SS who flashed talent on the defensive side as well this weekend.

Blue Devils 5  Red Dragons 5

Robert Porth (2019, Waterloo, IA) and Carter Petsche (2019, Epworth, IA) combined for 5 shutout innings in the no decision tie for the Blue Devils. Porth gave up just 1 hit and struck out 4 in his 2 innings of work. Petsche threw 3 innings and struck out 7 while also allowing just 1 hit. Petsche also had quite the game at the dish, adding another triple in a 2-3 effort. He added 1 run and and a RBI.

Quin Cornell (2021, Shellsburg, IA) added 2 hits, an RBI and run scored in this game for the Blue Devils. Cornell is now hitting an even .500 on the season and ranks 2nd overall in batting average in the league. Quin has been very impressive defensively and shows good maturity behind the plate as a primary catcher.

The Red Dragons had solid outings from all 3 pitchers in this game, giving up only 2 earned runs. Sebastian Hutson (2019, Norwalk, IA) allowed just 1 Earned Run in his outing, striking out 8 batters in just 3 innings while throwing 59% stats. Hutson has an ERA of 1.4, ranking him 7th of pitchers in the league who have pitched at least 3 innings. He has also been very impressive at the plate this season, hitting for an avg of .500 (t-second in the league) with on base percentage of .727 (also second).

Nathan Wilkinson (2019, Iowa City, IA) continued his tear on the mound this year, striking out 4 in 2 innings while allowing 0 earned runs. Alexander Swack (2019, Iowa City, IA) added 5 k's in 2 1/3 innings to round out the pitching for the Red Dragons.

Offensively, the Red Dragons struggled before exploding for 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th to play to a tie. Tony Christner (2019, Eldridge, IA) reached on an error on a deep shot to center to score 2 runs to tie the game in the 7th.

Red Dragons 11   Blackhawks 2

The Red Dragons raced out to an 8-0 lead after the first inning after 4 straight hits from Sebastian Hutson (2019, Norwalk, IA), Nathan Wilkinson (2019, Iowa City, IA), Luke Turner (2019, Washington, IA) and Brock Krieger (2022, Burlington, IA) and didn't look back.

Tyler Welch (2023, Davenport, IA) and Brock Krieger (2022, Burlington, IA) combined for 4 1/3 innings of 0 earned run baseball. Welch struck out two while Krieger struck out 3. Both players flashed good command, allowing just 1 walk each. Starter Tanner Collins (2019, Eldon, IA) picked up the win while allowing 1 earned run in 3 1/3 innings.

For the Blackhawks, Luke Posegate (2020, Grimes, IA) pitched 2 innings of no run baseball while striking out 3. Michael Pierick (2020, Des Moines, IA) tacked on a scoreless 7th inning while striking out 2. He bounced back from an injury in his first appearance of the year in week #1.

Offensively, Pierick also led the way for the Blackhawks. He was 2-3 in the game and knocked in an RBI.
