13u PG Series Classic: Days 1-2

2018 13u PG Series Classic: Day 1

A number of very talented players from all over the country, as well as Puerto Rico, arrived in Fort Myers this week to take part in the annual Series Classic. Pool play began on Tuesday and the action was fast and furious and featured outstanding individual play.

The Mid-South team trotted out 6-foot-3, Ethan Robinson (2023, Antioch, Tenn.) to the mound to begin play in early action. The big righty impressed from the first pitch on as his fastball was consistently clocked at 84-85 mph. In addition to his big, dominating right arm, Robinson also swung the bat like a player much his senior. He drove a ball to the right-center fence in his first at-bat for a double.

Carson Morton (2023, Albemarle, N.C.), another Mid-South standout, brought his bat to Fort Myers. Using solid bat-to-ball skills and a middle-of-the field mentality, Morton showed the ability to consistently make solid contact.

The Puerto Rico – Blue team brought a talented catch-and-throw receiver with them to JetBlue Park as Jalbert Sanabria (2022, Guayama, Puerto Rico) showed easy movements and soft hands in handling the PR staff. He also has solid transition skills and a quick, accurate arm.

The Deep South team has a number of very solid players in Southwest Florida. Second sacker Trey Kinnan (2023, Acworth, Ga.) flashed a quick, compact swing and consistent bat-to-ball skills. Jonathan Vioga (2022, Rome, Ga.) is a reliable receiver who showed advanced catch-and-throw skills and a plus arm that is quick and accurate. Logan Ervine (2023, Villa Rica, Ga.) has a solid stick. He has a flat bat path and quick hands and sprays line drives from foul line to foul line. Braden Burghardt (2022, Locust Grove, Ga.) is a 6-foot-1, rising high school freshman who drove the ball with authority to all fields. He flashed plus power to the deepest part of the field.

The Puerto Rico – Red squad has a number of talented position players here in Florida this week. Eddie Velasquez (2022, San Sebastian, Puerto Rico) is a gifted center fielder who has plus speed and outstanding outfield actions. He made more than one hit-saving play. He also has a promising arm that is quick and accurate. Alejandro Quiles (Guanica, Puerto Rico) can swing the stick. The gifted shortstop uses a flat path and very quick hands to drive the ball consistently from gap-to-gap. Abner Rivera (2023, Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico) flashed some pull-side pop with his strong righthanded approach. He clears his hips and consistently gets his barrel to the ball.

The Florida club has a big lefthanded hitter at the top of their lineup in Victor Martinez (2023, Orlando, Fla.), who shows the ability to hit the ball with authority to all fields and is a tough out. He also showed plus pop as he drove a pitch to the left-center field fence.

The Midwest team had a solid lefty hurler make his Series debut Tuesday morning as Cylan Madden (2022, Harrison, Ark.) pitched with a well-located fastball at 80-81 mph. His heater showed riding life up and solid, running sink down in the zone.

The Southeast team is loaded. The club, made up entirely with players from Georgia, is a sound group who looks like they have been playing together all summer and not for the first time. Cooper Milford (2023, Cummings, Ga.) showed skill in center field, on the mound and at the plate. He made both the routine and challenging play in center. As a pitcher, he pounded the zone with a solid 78-80 mph fastball that showed riding life. Lastly, the talented Milford swung the bat like a veteran. He is a line drive hitter who flashed some pop. He can also run, as he stretched what appeared to be a double into a hustling triple.

Malachi Jeffries (2023, Buford, Ga.) is the talented leadoff hitter for the Southeast team. He has solid bat-to-ball skills and is a plus, aggressive and instinctive runner. Carson Sewell (2023, Carrollton, Ga.) showed consistent bat-to-ball skills and used a middle-of-the-field swing path to drive the ball from gap-to-gap. Blake Rodgers (2023, Ringgold, Ga.) is an advanced lefthanded swinger who looks for pitches middle-away and uses an inside-out path to barrel up pitches up the middle and to the off-field.

Righthanded hitting Zach Selfon (2023, Mahwah, N.J.) helped pace the North team offense by flashing some solid pull-side punch. He hunts fastballs middle-in and does a good job of keeping his hands inside the ball.

2018 13u PG Series Classic: Day 2

Day 2 at JetBlue Park found a beautiful morning for baseball, a full schedule and a number of outstanding performances that highlighted 13u PG Series Classic play.

Team Virginia and the Deep South clubs teed it up in a ballgame that for six innings was a classic. The seventh inning saw the Virginia squad take a commanding lead that they held on to in the bottom half to secure the victory.

Virginia’s Kelly Crittenberger(2023, McLean, Va.) had a banner day at the dish. The righty swinger used a flat bat path, a great understanding of the strike zone and a quick, compact swing to hit pitches, with authority, from gap-to-gap. Michael Lewis (2023, Glen Allen, Va.) used a quiet approach at the plate and a short, quick swing to make consistent line drive contact.  Marlon Baggett (2022, Portsmouth, Va.) was outstanding at the top of the order for Virginia. The athletically gifted center fielder works the count, uses a short, middle-of-the-field swing path and makes consistently solid contact. He also has plus-plus speed and is a daring and aggressive base runner. On top of his noticeable offensive prowess, Baggett may be one of, if not the top defensive center fielder in the tournament. He can go get the ball and has an outstanding throwing arm that he showed off by throwing out a runner at the plate to end the ball game.

Andrew Poole (2022, McLean, Va.) toed the bump for four innings and was impressive. He only no-hit the Deep South, one of the tournament’s top offensive clubs for four innings. Poole pitched off his well-commanded fastball and worked the edges like a veteran pitcher much his senior. He was relieved by Jacob Jones (2022, Chesapeake, Va.) another command and control righty, who basically worked the same plan that had been so successful for the first four innings. Jones threw strikes and added and subtracted with his fastball. His pitch-to-contact mindset allowed the strike-throwing righty to keep the shutout intact for two more innings.

Offensively, the Virginia nine added on to their lead late in the ball game behind Charlie Felmlee (2022, Lynchburg, Va.), one of the club’s outstanding catchers. The righthanded hitting receiver is another fundamentally sound hitter for the Virginia club. His patient approach and middle-of-the-field mentality allows him to see pitches deep in the zone and spray hits to all parts of the diamond. Seth Keller (2022, Rockville, Va.) showed thunder in his bat as the strong righthanded hitter powered a ball deep to the left field wall against a strong prevailing wind. He uses a strong lower half and a quick swing with a power hitter’s lift to drive the ball.

The Deep South club had a couple of pitchers who did a very commendable job against the relentless Virginia offense. Lefthander Drew Fields (2023, Acworth, Ga.) started and pitched into the fourth inning and did so with solid mechanics and the ability to consistently pound the strike zone with a running and sinking fastball. He gave way to Austin Jetmore (2023, Douglasville, Ga.) who mixed and matched his well-commanded fastball and a curveball that missed barrels. The righthanded Jetmore pitched almost two scoreless innings of relief, giving his offense every chance to get back into the game.

The Florida nine has a number of talented players on their roster. Bryan Frydenlund (2023, Naples. Fla.) started on the bump and added a strong bat to support his efforts on the mound. The righty from Southwest Florida is a strike thrower who confidently works the edges. He pitches to contact and gets quick outs. He shut out a strong North squad for three strong innings. At the dish, he uses a short and compact swing path to consistently hit line drives from gap-to-gap. Paul Guerne (2023, Tampa, Fla.) is a dual threat player. He hits in the leadoff spot and brings a patient approach and a strong line drive path to the plate. Defensively, he is a ball hawk in center field who possesses a strong and accurate throwing arm. Edwin Melendez (2022, Kissimmee, Fla.) is a long and lean power swinger who has the pop in his bat to hit the ball to the deepest part of the ballpark. Garett Corkhill (2022, Alva, Fla.) is also a big power threat for the Florida squad. The local product from the greater Fort Myers area can drive the ball with authority to the biggest part of the field.

Sweet swinging lefty Noah Herrington (2023, Ocean City, N.J.) leads a potent North squad offense. He uses a middle-of-the-field mentality and a flat bat path to drive the ball to all parts of the diamond. Andrew Fischer (2022, Manchester, N.J.) also uses a quiet, smooth swing path. He is more pull-side oriented as he looks middle-in for pitches he can quickly and quietly get his barrel to.

The Central squad is made up of players from a number of states. They are a fundamentally sound, never-quit bunch that is scrappy and plays well together. Cole Cahill(2023, Westerville, Ohio), is a contact-oriented leadoff hitter who displays patience at the plate and a short, compact swing. He is a great table-setter at the top of the order. Austin Ackel (2023, Covington, La.) is a strong righthanded swinger who also plays a solid first base. The lanky Cajun shows some pop in his power swing and can drive the ball with authority from gap-to-gap. He has also mastered the first base bag at a relatively young stage in his a career. He shows quick feet, a sure glove and confidence in making every play. Dylan Melton (2023, Clarksville, Md.) is a smooth-swinging lefthanded hitter who displays solid bat-to-ball skills and a middle-of-the-field swing path.

Wade Thomas (2022, Rollinsford, N.H.) is the catalyst at the top of the Northeast lineup. The righthanded swinger is very patient at the dish and never expands the zone. He has a short, quick swing and makes consistently solid contact. On the bases, he is a plus instinctive runner who is very aggressive. Lukas Egenhauser (2022, Suffern N.Y.) is a heady player and a gifted defender at third base who has soft hands and a strong, accurate arm. The righthanded swinger makes consistent contact and is line drive hitter. Nic Frink (2022, Scarborough, Maine) is one of the top talents in Fort Myers this week. He brings a projectable power bat to the plate and is a threat to leave the yard with every pass. The 13u PG Series home run derby champion can drive the ball out of any park including those here at JetBlue. On top of his considerable offensive abilities, Frink is also a very gifted catcher. He has an easy set up behind the plate. He has soft hands and quick, accurate throwing arm.

Conor Bryant (2022, East Rochester, N.Y.) started on the bump for the Northeast squad in morning play and the big lefty has a unique style. His low three-quarters arm slot allows for great deception in and with his delivery. The ball appears to jump out of his hand and get on the batter before they can see it well enough to make consistent contact.

The Mid-South team had a strike thrower on the hill to start their game. Camden Wimbish (2023, Locust, N.C.) is a righthanded strike thrower who works fast and pounds the strike zone. His whippy arm style allows for consistent movement, especially down in the zone.

The Puerto Rico – Blue team loves to swing the bat. The aggressive offensive bunch has the same mentality from top to bottom. Dig in. Grip it. Hunt fastballs. Hack.

Big Jalbert Sanabria (2022, Guayama, Puerto Rico) was a defensive standout behind the plate in Day 1 action and on Day 2 the stout and strong righthanded hitter showed off his power. He uses his very strong core and a slugger’s lift at contact to drive the ball with authority to the pull side. Neil Rodriguez (2022, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico) shows outstanding bat-to-ball skills and a line drive mentality. On the bases the daring baserunner is instinctive and aggressive. Sebastian Rosado (2023, Lajas, Puerto Rico) showed the ability to consistently get his barrel to the ball. He also liked the big moment, as he drove in some key two-out runs for his club. Victor Fortuna (2023, Carolina, Puerto Rico) used a flat bat path and a keen eye at the plate to hit line drives from foul line to foul line. Like many of his teammates, he is also an accomplished baserunner.

The West club has some solid individual talent from a number of different states. Caleb Castle (2022, Houston, Texas) showed the ability to make consistent contact using a flat bat path and a short, quick swing. He is also an aggressive runner who will take the extra base. Victor Diaz (2023, San Antonio, Texas) is a patient righthanded stick who works the count and looks for pitches middle-away. His inside-out bat path allows him to hit line drives up the middle and to the off field. Dillon Lopez (2023, San Antonio, Texas) is a gifted catcher who handles the West staff like a veteran receiver. He calls an advanced game and is a confident backstop who possesses a strong and true throwing arm. At the plate, he uses a flat path and strong hands to drive the ball, with authority, to the middle of the diamond.

Miles Guardino (2022, Hollister, Cal.) is a solid lefthanded swinger who always seems to get his barrel on path. He can drive the ball, especially well, to the pull side. He is also a very gifted defensive first baseman. He displays soft hands, quick feet and a knowledge about playing this very important position that is advanced for this age group.

Puerto Rico was up first on the board in the bottom of the first scoring their single run in the game that came from Jose Torres Rivera (2022, Puerto Rico).  Deep South doubled that shortly after in the top of the second with runs scored by Yoel Tejeda Jr (2022, Davie, Fla.) and Xavier Vergne (2022, Miramar, Fla.). 13u World Series Notes: Days 1-2

Perfect Game Staff

Michael Wedgeworth (2030, Flomaton, AL) had put the two way ability on full display so far this week, dominating from both sides. On the mound Wedgeworth ran the fastball up to 84 (81-83) with ease to the delivery. Broke off a couple nasty curveballs that induced swing and miss, as well as freezing hitters for punch outs. Collected six in his four inning complete game. He also would not be denied at the plate going 3-5 in the first two days with two doubles. Very intriguing young player as the body continues to grow.  Tyler Bellush (2031, Summerville, SC) is a sure handed shortstop for the Canes Nation squad. Swings it from the left side of the plate and the barrel accuracy has really stuck out thus far. 3-4 through the first couple days with a double and two triples, Bellush has also walked twice and collected 3 RBI along the way. Yesterday against USA Prime with the bases loaded,...

Joey Cohen
Article Image
After a heavy stretch of early summer looks, our scouting staff felt confident rolling out an updated ‘28 national ranking a couple weeks ago. The evaluation window was packed whether it was with our Memorial Day and Summer Kickoff tournaments, UBC action, Sunshine Showcases, and of course the Junior National Showcase which all provided a deep and diverse look at the class against strong competition. Between fresh game evaluations and updated showcase data, we were able to get a clearer picture of where players stand and more importantly how they’ve progressed. Improvements in strength, athleticism, and overall skill were evident across the board giving our staff real conviction when it came time to shuffle the board. With that in mind, I wanted to highlight a handful of west region prospects who made a strong impression on me this summer and earned a well-deserved jump in...
