Runbirds win 15u Summer Showdown

EMERSON, Ga. – The NE Runbirds took home the 15u PG Summer Showdown championship on Tuesday with an 8-3 win over Team Elite Nation 15u. The victory caps off what was an impressive 7-0 run at this year’s event.

The Runbirds pitching staff had a strong championship game as the duo of Luke Delongchamp and Ryan Sciacca allowed no earned runs and just five hits. Delongchamp got the ball to start and was able to strike out five Team Elite batters in his 3 2/3 innings of work, while Sciacca finished the deal with a strong final 3 1/3 innings.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Runbirds were able to use a pair of four-run innings to break away from Team Elite on Tuesday. In the third inning, the Runbirds were able to tally the four runs on three hits, highlighted by a two-run single from Reed Parson.

Parson, who was the MVP of this year’s tournament, batted .500 with six singles, three doubles, and eight RBI heading into the championship game. He also was stellar on the mound of the Runbirds, throwing nine shutout innings while striking out 11 batters this week.

Still ahead 4-0 heading to the seventh and final inning, the Runbirds were able to break away for good with four runs on two hits, highlighted by another two-run single, this time from Jonathan Santucci.

Chili Dogs hold on for championship

EMERSON, Ga. – The Home Plate Chili Dogs 17u Dombrowsky emerged victorious in the championship of the 17u PG Summer Showdown on Tuesday with a 5-4 win over the 643 DP Cougars. The win over the reigning Summer Showdown champions ends what was an impressive three-year run for 643 DP.

The Chili Dogs struck first on Tuesday with a big second inning. The Chili Dogs went for three runs on two hits, while also being able to draw a pair of run scoring walks. The big single to make it 3-0 came from Brian Port. Port, who is a native of Peachtree City, Georgia, finished Tuesday’s game 2-for-3.

Tuesday wasn't the only time Port made an impact for this Home Plate Chili Dogs team. Port garnered MVP honors of this year’s 17u PG Summer Showdown with what was an impressive week at the plate. Before the championship game, Port was 11-for-21 with two triples and 11 RBI.

After the 643 DP Cougars were able to answer with one run of their own in the bottom of the second, the Chili Dogs went right back to work in the top of the third to extend their lead to 5-1. Fueled by back-to-back doubles from Andrew Pinckney and Ryan Dyal, five runs was able the Chili Dogs would need as their pitching staff was able to hold 643 DP at bay the rest of the way.

After 643 DP was able to claw back within one, Chili Dogs reliever Clay Weatherly closed the door with two shutout innings to finish the game. Weatherly was able to strand the one hit during his outing while also striking out four 643 DP batters.

The MV-Pitcher of this year’s 17u PG Summer Showdown was Sebastian Thomas. The Auburn commit did not allow an earned run for the 643 DP Cougars in his 8 2/3 innings of work this week. During that stretch, he allowed only two hits and struck out 11 batters.
