Florida Super Qualifier Notes

Providing a spark at the top of the order for Platinum Baseball, Jake Carsello (2020, Plantation, Fla.) got things started with a first inning run following an infield hit. Showing off his speed, Carsello stole a bag, which put himself in scoring position. The 5-foot-9, 140-pound center fielder moves well and is an above average defender in the outfield.

Carsello’s teammate Franklin Vasquez (2021, Hollywood, Fla.) showed an aggressive pull-side approach, going 2-for-2 with a double. Both hits were driven into left field, and Vasquez has good bat speed. He is comfortable in the box with an opened stance and uses a leg lift. Getting his front foot down early, Vasquez is able to see the ball well and look to drive the ball.

Ben Lira (2021, Fort Myers, Fla.) also went 2-for-2 playing for Canes Baseball. The 5-foot-10 outfielder shows a solid approach at the plate and can work a count. Doubling to left field in his first at-bat, Lira jumped on a fastball and didn’t miss it. He has a good feel for the game and is athletic.

A tall, lean infielder, Evan Lightbourn (2020, Parkland, Fla.) has a projectable body and once filled out will have a strong, athletic presence on the field. He has a compact swing with no wasted movements. He keeps his long arms inside the baseball and can attack the middle of the field with line drives at the plate.

Flashing solid defensive skills behind the plate, Logan Piedra (2021, Pembroke Pines, Fla.) is an athletic catcher with some present strength. He showed off his arm strength by throwing out a runner attempting to steal second base. Later in the game, Piedra used his quickness to pick a ball in the dirt, popped up and applied the tag on the hitter attempting to run to first after he swung through strike three. Piedra’s tag was applied before the hitter-turned-runner could even get out of the batter’s box.

The catcher showed a solid approach at the plate as well. Falling behind 0-2 in the count, Piedra went into a two-strike approach fouling off a few pitches. He then simplified his swing and went back up the middle for a base hit.

Slugging two doubles from the leadoff spot, Lucas Serra (2020, Miami Lakes, Fla.) combined his strong barrel awareness and speed to set the tone for South Florida Select 16u. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound center fielder has a quick bat through the zone and has a nice line drive approach.

Hitting behind Serra in the two-hole, Nicolas Boza (2020, Miami Lakes, Fla.) uses an inside-out swing with line drive results. Picking up a hard contact single to center, Boza stayed inside the ball to knock it up the middle. He has a strong lower half with room to add on upper body strength later on.

One of the best throws from the entire tournament came out of the hand of left fielder Jonathan Ramallo (2020, Miami, Fla.) A toolsy player standing 6-foot-1, 185-pounds, Ramallo has a plus arm from the outfield and throws with accuracy. He unleashed a bullet about 280 feet away from home plate and deliver a strike to the catcher on a line for an out after a base hit.

A physical hitter that consistently hits loud line drives, Frank Elissalt (2020, Miami, Fla.) collected a few hits vs Florida Elite. With present strength and a strong 185-pound, 6-foot-1 frame, Elissalt generates a ton of power with his quick bat. He does damage with power on the pull side currently and can drive the ball into the gaps.

Third baseman Marcos Soler (2019, Miami, Fla.) provided a spark to Florida Elite’s offense against US Elite 2020, going 3-for-3 out of the three-hole with a double and three RBI. The 6-foot-3 slugger covers a lot of the plate with his long arms and has a fast bat through the zone.

Lefthander Joseph Delgado (2020, Hialeah, Fla.) started the game for Florida Elite and worked 4 1/3 innings. A strike thrower topping at 78 mph with his fastball and flashing a curveball with downer action, Delgado collected seven strikeouts. He is athletic with repeatable mechanics and has a good pitchers body at 6-foot, 180-pounds.

Yoidel Cabrera (2020, Miami, Fla.) quickly threw two-thirds of an inning, needing just 10 pitches to strike out both hitters he faced. Attacking the strike zone, Cabrera sat at 81-83 mph with his fastball, showing good arm speed. His fastball rode in on hitters and was tough to touch. Listed as a shortstop, Cabrera has tremendous athleticism and a strong arm.

SWFL Nation 2020 had a huge win over the GT Clowns, winning 22-0. Helping lead the offensive explosion was McFaddin (Mac) Moise (2020, Cape Coral, Fla.) going 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. The Florida Gulf Coast recruit swings the bat well with a compact swing that is direct to the baseball.

The catcher also ripped a walk-off double to center field in the championship game against South Florida Select 16u.

Moise’s teammate Ridge Skarbek (2020, Indialantic, Fla.) had a strong day at the plate going 3-for-3 with three runs scored. The 5-foot-9 switch-hitter has a quick bat from both sides of the plate and a line drive approach to all fields. He plays a solid second base and has some utility value with the ability to play multiple positions.

Elite Squad 16u Rodriguez defeated SWFL Elite 2020 by a score of 4-1 on Monday morning. Throwing a complete game for Elite Squad was Cole Stasio (2020, Davie, Fla.) The 6-foot-2, 185-pound righthander has a big, durable body and shouldered the workload for six innings, striking out five and sitting 75-82 with his fastball. He showed the ability to attack both halves of the plate and pounded the zone.

Stasio got help from Albert Sanchez (2020, Hialeah, Fla.) who ripped a double to left field and scored a run. Sanchez has present pull power, and at only 5-foot-5, will grow and should see the power translate to home runs. His fly ball had good carry on it and Sanchez has good barrel awareness.

Center fielder Adrian Ojea (2020, Lake Worth, Fla.) hit well out of the two-hole for Banditos Florida 16u Prospects. Going 2-for-2 with a double and run scored, Ojea has a line drive swing and works counts well, getting walked twice. The lefthanded hitting outfielder has an ideal approach for the second spot in the order and plays a solid outfield, as well.

His teammate Trevor Scott (2021, Jupiter, Fla.) collected a few hits and the first baseman has some projection, standing 5-foot-11, 175-pounds. Scott has a quick barrel through the zone and sprays line drives all over the field.

Avery Thomas (2020, Deerfield Beach, Fla.) is a tall, athletic shortstop at 6-foot-1, 180-pounds. Thomas moves well on the field with a good first step and has some explosive hands at the plate. He drove in two runs for East Coast Baseball, going 2-for-3 in the process against TSA Elite 16u.

Miguel Rosado (2020, Cooper City, Fla.) worked six easy innings for South Florida Select. The 6-foot righthander has solid arm speed that generates a fastball that tops at 81 mph. He attacked the zone well and got on top of his pitches, creating a good angle. He mixed in a curveball at 68 mph and used both pitches to strikeout eight hitters in his six frames of work.

In the championship game, Luis Fuentes (2020, Coral Springs, Fla.) turned in a masterful pitching performance, going six strong, no-hit innings. The righthander was 82-85 mph with his fastball that he worked in and out well. He showed solid command of his changeup at 74 mph that got swings and misses to lefthanded hitters. The pitch came out of the same arm speed as his fastball and showed deception. Fuentes struck out six batters and shows how tough he can be to hit when on. Driving off his back leg well, he works his whole body into his delivery and gets solid extension.

Pitching equally well and picking up a win in the process, Sehjin Daley (2020, Tampa, Fla.) threw seven strong frames of one-hit ball. The 6-foot, 195-pound righty has a durable, workhorse body type and proved it with his shutout. He mixed in a curveball and slider combo to complement his 80-84 mph fastball. He showed solid feel for both pitches, landing them for strikes at time and showing the ability to expand the zone later in counts.

He finished the day with five hits in six at-bats which included four doubles and six runs batted in. PG Draft: Top-100 Reports (April Update) 1. Roch Cholowsky, SS, UCLA R-R, 6-2/202, Chandler, AZ Previously Drafted: Never Drafted Roch Cholowsky has consistently ranked at the top of the class throughout the cycle due to the safety and upside of the profile. Defensively, he is a plus defender at shortstop with soft hands, consistent actions, and quality range. Not only should he stick at the position long term, he should excel there at the next level. Offensively, there is a strong mix of hit and power potential from the right side of the plate. The swing is a bit unorthodox with a shorter finish, but Cholowsky consistently finds the barrel and drives the ball with authority to all fields. He has strong bat to ball skills with impact. He has walked more than stuck out during his collegiate career, giving him a high on-base ability. The run tool is the only tool that doesn’t jump...

Another week down and Johnson County continues their torrid run to remain at number 1. They're 46-2 on the season with multiple hitters over 25 bombs which is astonishing for the level as the Cavs have announced themselves as title favorites. Just a couple of weeks left heading down the stretch and our field remains mostly the same with the two additions of midwest powerhouse Iowa Western and the Warriors of East Central who will have a tough test Wednesday in Poplarville against fellow Mississippi adversary Pearl River in a mid-week double header.   Rk. Coppy's Corner: April 23 POY Deep Dive

John Coppolella

Each week I huddle with Vinnie Cervino and Craig Cozart  to discuss Top-25 rankings and Players of the Week. In Coppy’s Corner, I dive deeper into these Players of the Week, providing analysis from 20+ years working in baseball front offices at the highest level.     Player of the Week: Tague Davis – University of Louisville  Between 2016-2022, the University of Louisville produced 14 players taken in the Top 5 Rounds of the MLB Draft, seven of whom were taken in the 1st Round. The Cardinals haven’t produced a Top 5 Rounds pick since 2022, but that will change soon with Davis. Still only 20 years old and not draft-eligible until 2027, Davis continued his assault on college baseball this weekend with a 7-for-12 performance that included 5 HR. On the 2026 season, Davis is hitting .389 AVG / .489 OBP / .911 SLG / 1.392 OPS. That’s a 400+...

DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 22

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
The final weeks of the college baseball regular season have a way of separating programs that are genuinely postseason-ready from those that have simply been good enough for long enough. Conference tournaments loom, selection committees are paying close attention, and every game on the schedule carries weight that it simply didn't in February. This week's action, combined with the latest Perfect Game Top 25, paints a picture of a college baseball landscape where the top is clearly defined — and where the middle is a genuine battle. What follows is a cross-level look at teams across the NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III ranks who find themselves in that uncomfortable space: not safely in, not clearly out, but firmly on the bubble. Some have built compelling résumés that should hold up under scrutiny. Others have excellent records against soft competition...

Another few weeks have wrapped up this high school season as we’re flying through the spring and most southern states are starting playoffs right around the corner. With the end of the regular season, we have another National Top 50 update to bring to you, along with this will be the start of the weekly editions of our National Top 50. We have a change at the top of the rankings as Venice (FL) takes over the top spot after just dominating their competition in the state of Florida this year. Orange Lutheran (CA) drops one spot to No. 2 after dropping a series but still holds firm at No. 2 in the country. Barbe (LA) has continued to dominate and holds onto the No. 3 spot while Tomball (TX) skyrockets in this update to No. 4 in the country, currently holding an incredible 30-0-1 record. The rest of the top-10 is names we’ve become accustomed to see with Aledo (TX) at No. 5, IMG...
