FORT MYERS, Fla. – A classic pitcher’s duel in the 16u Super25 Florida Super Qualifier title game was settled with one swing of the bat from Mac Moise (2020, Cape Coral, Fla.). His single to right field in the bottom of the seventh scored Josh Brooks (2020, Auburndale, Fla.) to send SWFL Nation 2020 to a 1-0 victory over South Florida Select 16u to clinch a berth in the 16u PG Super25 National Championship.

As both teams progressed through pool play during the week, it was clear that the two teams had the makings of a tournament champion as both sides only gave up five runs in their three pool play games on their way to the playoff bracket. From there, each team survived two games on Monday to advance to the title game at JetBlue Park.

With pitching being taxed for both sides on their way to Tuesday’s matchup, each team had one arm they could rely on to get the job done. Luis Fuentes (2020, Coral Springs, Fla.) got the nod for the Select after throwing four shutout innings in a victory on Saturday while Sehjin Daley (2020, Tampa, Fla.) was fresh and ready to roll for SWFL Nation.

Both righthanders were in command from the start as the zeroes piled up on the scoreboard inning after inning with baserunners coming few and far between for each side.

Entering the top of the seventh inning, only one hit was recorded by either team for the entire game, that being a single off the bat of Select designated hitter Keshav Narendra-Babu (2019, Pembroke Pines, Fla.) coming all the way back in the second inning.  Daley worked a clean seventh inning and was sitting at just 66 pitches for SWFL Nation as his teammates dealt with a new pitcher in the home half of the seventh.

Fuentes gave way to Matthew Varela (2020, Hialeah, Fla.) after striking out six and issuing two walks. Varela instantly would find trouble as he issued a leadoff walk to Nick Richir (2020, Cape Coral, Fla.).

Varela made up for the free pass by promptly picking off Richir at first, but he ended up issuing another walk to Brooks to give SWFL Nation a one-out baserunner. After Varela coaxed a a line out to center for the second out, Moise’s liner into right-center field was just out of the reach of the Select center fielder. With Brooks flying around the bases on contact, he was able to slide in with the winning run to put SWFL Nation into the 16u PG Super25 National Championship, which will take place July 16-20 back at JetBlue Park.

Moise’s heroics garnered him MV-Player for the event as the FGCU commit was strong behind the plate in handling a pitching staff that allowed just 10 runs in six games.

For the runner-up Select, Fuentes was an easy choice for MV-Pitcher for the tournament as he finished with 10 scoreless innings and 10 strikeouts while only allowing just two hits over his two appearances.
