College Notebooks: May 4 | May 5College Player Database

During the season Perfect Game scouts will be traveling to some of the top series to watch the very best players in college baseball. Those observations, captured with both written notes and video, will be shared in the College Player Database as linked above, notes that can also be accessed on the players' individual PG profile pages. Throughout the season select reports will be shared in feature format to promote the players, the teams and college baseball as a whole.

Robert Neustrom, OF, Iowa

Neustrom came up big in Iowa’s series victory over Oklahoma State, going 7-for-15 in three games with five runs scored, six driven in, a pair of doubles and a pair of homers. Listed at 6-foot-3, 210-pounds, Neustrom has a strong and noticeable presence in the lefthanded batter’s box, and on the field in general. While he doesn’t get cheated at the plate and isn’t afraid to swing the bat hard looking to impact the baseball, his swing and overall approach remains under control with the ability to make adjustments.

His biggest game came on Saturday, hitting a pair of home runs, in addition to some big league popups, showing off his lefthanded power. The first home run was a solo shot in the third inning in Iowa’s come-from-behind win over Oklahoma State, a majestic shot that he didn’t miss, getting all of a low-80s breaking ball that he deposited high and deep over the wall in right field. His second was a three-run shot to the opposite field, showing the ability to drive the pitch the other way even if his approach, for the most part, is to his pull side.

While his bat is his best tool, he moves well for his size and has average arm strength. He likely profiles best in left field, but could have more value if versatile enough to play both corner spots, and possibly first base as well. With a knack for hitting the ball in the air he has obvious power potential, and how often he taps into that potential will be the difference between him being an everyday player and a fourth outfielder with pop off the bench.'

Matt Kroon, 3B, Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State is already Kroon’s third stop collegiately – he began his career at Oregon before transferring to Central Arizona for his sophomore season – after emerging as a promising hitter late in his high school career. His father Marc played in the big leagues for four seasons, as Matt Kroon definitely has an advanced feel for the game based on watching his body language on the field.

A strongly build yet rangy athlete listed at 6-foot-2, 201-pounds, Kroon has played some shortstop recently for the Cowboys, somewhat by necessity, but he handles the position well, at least at the college level. His usual defensive home is at third base, where he shows the requisite lateral quickness and arm strength, and he could be an option at second base as well.

Kroon’s approach at the plate is noticeable. A righthanded hitter, he has good plate discipline and waits for a pitch he can drive wit a knack for squaring the baseball up. He has the ability to drive the ball to the opposite field and is at his best going with pitches and driving them from one gap to the next. He has good, not great, speed, and his slender, well-tapered build could allow for him to add more strength as he continues to mature without losing his current flexibility.

Kroon has yet to live up to his offensive potential but has the tools to be a productive hitter at the professional level. His athleticism gives him added versatile defensive value, as he could develop as a utility player with the ability to play multiple positions on the field.

Devlin Granberg, OF, Dallas Baptist

Setting the tone for each and every game at the top of the order for Dallas Baptist University is the heart and soul of the offensive attack, senior Devlin Granberg. Not a typical leadoff hitter in size, standing 6-foot-2 and 225-pounds, he is not a typical leadoff hitter in terms of production either. Granberg leads the Patriots in average (.425), stolen bases (19), and walks (39) which is not overly uncommon from a college table-setter. However, leading the team in RBI (54) while posting eight home runs and sporting a 1.187 OPS are numbers that will raise some eyebrows.

Granberg has a track record of being able to hit at every level he has played and this season he is putting the icing on the cake of his collegiate career. Coming off a junior campaign, in which he was tabbed the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and won the conference batting title (.359), he is showing that he is ready to take the step up to the next level of competition.

Having a package of size and above average speed with great instincts for the game, Granberg will certainly be able to transition his skills into the professional game smoothly. His pitch recognition and plate discipline are far above average and coupled with a short, consistent and quick swing, that shows advanced barrel-to-ball skills, while not sacrificing power, makes him one of the better hitters in collegiate baseball. His ability to handle the bat with two strikes is a major factor contributing to his lofty batting average. He does not give in for contact with two strikes but will continue to spoil pitches until he finds something he can drive. Granberg will use the entire field to do damage and rarely puts himself in negative situations at the plate. With instincts on the bases and a feel for the running game, he is 19-for-20 in stolen bases this year, which is remarkable for a player of his size.

That speed transitions into the outfield, where Granberg takes good routes and reads the ball well off the bat. His first step is quick and decisive and he understands the outfield well. His arm plays below average but not enough to be alarmed and it will not prevent him from being able to play at the highest levels of the game. Coaches, from his junior college coach to the Dallas Baptist staff, rave about his make-up and character and it is not hard to see that he possesses leadership qualities as he interacts with his teammates. Teams will be buying the bat this June, but they might be surprised at how good the entire package really is.

Kevin Strohschein, OF, Tennessee Tech

After a tremendous freshman campaign in which he hit 15 home runs to go with a .393 average, Strohschein took a step back during his sophomore year. However, this year he has returned to the form he showed as a freshman and is a contender to win the Triple Crown in the Ohio Valley Conference.

A well-proportioned athlete, Strohschein is an average runner recording consistent running times between 4.3 and 4.35 second up the line. He shows a league average arm and should be strong enough for him to remain in right field at the next level. Offensively, Strohschein checks off most of the prerequisites. He lets the ball get deep, has a very quiet swing and uses his hands effectively, which allows him to hit for power to all fields. He hits with a deep load and a wide base, clearing his hips during his swing while creating good natural lift in his swing, which gives him his present power.

That power was in full display throughout Tennessee Tech’s weekend series against Belmont as he hit three home runs in three days. In his first at-bat on Friday he showed off his raw strength when he hit a fastball the other way for a line drive home run to right field. He then proceeded to hit his second home run of the night, a towering fly ball pulled down the left field line that was a no doubter. He continued his opposite field approach on Saturday when he hit a hard line drive single in front of the right fielder. After the single on Saturday he started expanding the zone some causing contact issues throughout most of the game. However, he rebounded on Sunday hitting yet another home run, giving him 15 for the year.

Gunner Halter, SS, Seminole State College (Okla.)

Halter entered the spring as the fifth-ranked prospect at the junior college level. Built tall and thin with plenty of room for added weight at a listed 6-foot-3, 180-pounds, Halter hits with a slightly open stance and a small leg kick. He displays a sound approach at the plate with good patience and pitch recognition, jumping on pitches he can drive, which often leads to hard contact. The ball jumps off his bat with power to all parts of the field including the ability to drive outside pitches the opposite way to right field as a righthanded hitter. Generating good torque and bat speed, Halter has surprising pop given his slender stature. There is both loft and leverage to his swing, which could lead to even more power as he matures physically.

At shortstop Halter can be inconsistent in a few areas and may have to move to another position at the next level, although his offensive profile still gives him value on an infield or outfield corner. While Halter does have plus arm strength, his movements and hands can be a little stiff at times, but third base could be a realistic opportunity for him. As his speed and lateral movements are sound. He’s enjoying a big season overall, hitting .393-18-51 with 29 stolen bases, so if he’s not drafted early enough he could take his talents to Mississippi State for his junior year.

DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 15

Nick Herfordt

Welcome to this week's small school baseball rankings, covering NCAA Division II, the NAIA, and NCAA Division III. As the calendar turns toward the final weeks of the regular season, the urgency is real across all three levels — teams are running out of weekends to build their cases, and the extended postseason invitations that every program is chasing don't go to programs that peak in March. The next few weeks of results will carry more weight than anything that happened before spring break, and the postseason committees in all three divisions are watching closely. Every series dropped to a team you should beat, every road sweep you let get away — it all matters now in a way it simply didn't two months ago. What you'll also notice as you read through the breakdowns below is that the numbers are doing more of the heavy lifting in how these rankings are constructed. Run...

April 14th Perfect Game/Player of the Week:  Jaquae Stewart, INF/OF, Texas State  The Texas State Bobcats (24-12) are sitting in second place in the ultra-competitive Sun Belt Conference, and they have one of the most explosive offenses in the country.  They average right at 8-runs per game and can slug with the best of them, averaging almost 2-home runs per game as well.  Sitting in the middle of the order, Jaquae Stewart, is putting together a career year and is becoming the focus of opposing teams.  The 5-10/234 junior from Sinton, Tx is your classic lefthanded power hitter and is thriving in his move from Austin to San Marcos.  While it wasn’t the best week for his club, Stewart was sensational, collecting 8 hits in his 19 at-bats, scoring 5 runs, launching 5 home runs and driving in an insane 17 runs.  For the season, he is now slashing...

College Top 25: April 13

In a season where remaining in the Top 25 has become a war of attrition, the No. 1 UCLA Bruins (33-2) are making the game look much easier than it is in all reality.  Winners of 27-games in a row, this club continues to win games by any means necessary as they continue their historic run.  Beyond the incredible win streak, the Bruins have started off Big Ten play (18-0) by sweeping their first six conference weekend.  Adding to their resume, in Game 1 of their series at Rutgers, they won a 14-inning thriller by a score of 4-1where their pitching staff registered an eye-popping 30-strikeouts while only surrendering 1 walk and 4 hits throughout.  In most any other season, the No. 2 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (30-5) would be sitting atop the poll as they are putting together a historic season of their own.  They swept Florida State (24-11) who was previously ranked...

PG Draft: Favorite Position Group

Tyler Henninger
Article Image
Every draft class has its strengths. Some years its a loaded group of prep infielders, some years its a deep collection of college arms. In this year’s class, certain position groups stand out above the rest to us. This week, the draft team dives into their favorite position groups. Groups that we believe are loaded with depth, upside, and big league potential. College Infielders It’s hard not to get excited about the crop of college infielders in this year’s class because of who is at the top. Roch Cholowsky alone makes the group exciting. He’s got gold glove potential at the next level and an offensive profile that should make him one of the Top 15 to 20 prospects in all of baseball the second he gets drafted. Justin Lebron is another player with as much upside in the class. He is a premium athlete that can really pick it at short and has big upside with the...

Wolforth Throwing Mentorship: Article 64

Ron Wolforth
Article Image
What Do Barry Zito, Justin Verlander, Trevor Bauer, and Dallas Keuchel All Have in Common? By Ron Wolforth | Texas Baseball Ranch® | PG Arm Care Take a second and think about the question posed in the title before you read on. Four Cy Young Award winners. Four of the most decorated pitchers of their generation. What's the common thread? The first answer is obvious… they all won the most prestigious individual award in pitching. Most of you probably got there immediately. The second answer is less obvious… they all trained at the Texas Baseball Ranch® at some point in their development. Interesting, maybe, but not the point of this article. The third answer is the one I really want you to sit with, because it has direct relevance to your career right now: they all move completely differently. And they all attack hitters completely differently. Don't rush past that....
