Cody Deason, RHP



Despite picking up the loss opposite Tristan Beck of Stanford, Cody Deason provided 6 1/3 solid innings, at least giving Arizona a chance to win by allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. He struck out three during that time and overall is having a strong season, limiting batters to a sub-.200 batting average to go along with a 2.20 ERA, one of the best in the Pac-12. Used primarily as a reliever during his first two years as college, Deason has made a nice transition to the team’s Friday starters and is eligible for the 2018 MLB Draft. The walks indicate a need for improved control, and he frequently fell behind the count in this game but also exhibited the ability to make big pitches when he needed to.

With a strongly built 6-foot-3, 206-pound frame, Deason looks the part of an innings eater with a strong, sturdy build, particularly through the lower half. He uses that lower half well to generate momentum towards home plate that leads to a clean, easy arm action. He generates easy upper-80s to low-90s velocity and pairs his fastball with a sharp and effective breaking ball that can vary between a curveball and a slider in shape, a pitch that typically sits in the upper-70s to low-80s. He does a good job both dropping this pitch in for strikes and using it as a chase pitch down and out of the zone.


Michael Flynn, RHP



After serving in a swing role for Arizona during his sophomore season, Flynn has pitched predominantly as a starter this season and has enjoyed a fair amount of success in the process. At 6-foot-3, 208-pounds, Flynn has a broad-shouldered build that is well tapered through the waist and could lead to additional strength gains. He throws from a high three-quarters arm angle that generates easy low-90s velocity, and he maintained that velocity well in his 5 2/3 innings of work against Stanford, still touching 93 mph in the fourth and fifth innings. He also mixed in an upper-70s breaking ball, but his best pitch may have been his mid-80s changeup, an offering he did a good job to maintain his arm speed on while pulling the string perfectly to elicit weak swings.

Flynn effectively sequenced between his pitches and was able to vary the shape on his breaking ball. The pitch had more effectiveness when thrown more like a curveball, a swing-and-miss offering that he used effectively when ahead in the count. He didn’t back down against the Stanford lineup, going right after hitters while effectively working his way out of a few jams. He was in position to pick up the win before the Arizona bullpen gave the game away, as Flynn allowed just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out eight Cardinal hitters.


Alfonso Rivas, 1B/OF



Coming off of a dominant sophomore season, Rivas is enjoying another strong year as a junior, even if his overall numbers aren’t quite as gaudy, and he enjoyed a similarly strong weekend against a dominant Stanford pitching staff, going 5-for-12 with a double and a home run. He’s built compactly strong, listed at 5-foot-11, 191-pounds, and despite his sub 6-foot listing he offers an intimidating presence in the batter’s box thanks to his keen batting eye and propensity to punish mistakes. He’s a dead-red fastball hitter with considerable power to his pull side, doing a good job to incorporate his lower half with natural plane to his lefthanded swing. He can handle high velocity and his approach allows him to wait for a pitch that he can drive. While he’s a solid overall athlete and has played the outfield, he is best suited at first base.

Coppy's Corner: July 28 Summer Edition

The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. After a long summer of baseball, Excel Blue Wave National had one final opportunity to end it the way every team hopes to.  Together, having fun, and as champions. Excel Blue Wave National closed their summer with a 13-9 victory over Excel Blue Wave American – Morrison to capture the 2026 16U Perfect Game Hoover Classic championship. In a game that required contributions throughout the lineup and seven innings of competition, the Excel Blue Wave National relied on the same qualities and approach that had carried the group all summer. Following a jam-packed week of competition in East Cobb, Georgia, at the 15u WWBA National Championships, East Coast Ghost '29 National and eXposure 15u National were crowned co-champions after inclement weather prevented the championship game from being played. Both clubs completed the tournament undefeated behind dominant pitching and explosive offensive performances on their way to the title.
