Weekend PreviewPerfect Game College Player Database

During the season Perfect Game scouts will be traveling to some of the top series to watch the very best players in college baseball. Those observations, captured with both written notes and video, will be shared in the College Player Database as linked above, notes that can also be accessed on the players' individual PG profile pages. Throughout the season select reports will be shared in feature format to promote the players, the teams and college baseball as a whole.

Jason Bilous, RHP, Coastal Carolina

It was not apparent early on that Jason Bilous was going to set a career high in strikeouts, earn a win and show a plus pitch, but the junior from Delaware did just that. After a forgetful first inning where Bilous hit the leadoff hitter and gave up both of his earned runs, the ace of the Coastal Carolina staff looked like a legitimate early round MLB Draft pick. Bilous settled in very nicely after the first inning getting lots of swings and misses with his fastball and slider. Tallying 10 punchouts, the Georgia Southern offense could not find the barrel against Bilous.

Bilous’ arm really whips through the circle and can be inconsistent at the point of release quite often. Listed at 6-foot-2 190-pounds and possibly shorter than the listing, Bilous appeared to make a big-time adjustment to his release point and in doing so the command was much better. His fastball ranged from 91-95 mph. He hit 95 mph early on twice and mostly lived at 92-93. It is worth noting, however, that on his 100th pitch of the game Bilous did pump 94 mph into the sixth inning. The fastball is mostly straight but did show occasional short sink. As for the slider, the pitch was certainly his best offering. Showing ultra-tight spin and hard diving action down and away to righthanded hitters, the pitch was ery effective in getting the Georgia Southern hitters to whiff. Bilous flashed a changeup that he only showed three times, but the pitch showed potential. Still developing feel for the fading changeup, Bilous has the potential to really dominate once he has fully developed that third pitch.

The overall outing was impressive and the projectable righthander still has room to fill in his frame. Bilous has been up to 99 mph in the past and it is possible to see that velocity again with continued maturity and added strength. With the win, Bilous remains undefeated at 4-0 and looks like a strong candidate for the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year as well as an early pick in the 2018 Draft.

Brian Eichhorn, RHP, Georgia Southern

After moving the series up a day due to the Easter holiday on Sunday, Georgia Southern and Coastal Carolina matched up in an outstanding pitching matchup with big MLB Draft implications. Brian Eichhorn took the ball on Thursday night for the Eagles of Georgia Southern facing off against a very mature hitting Coastal Carolina team.

In the first inning, Eichhorn ran into some early trouble by giving up a pair of hits to start the game. Eichhorn struck out the next three batters, however, showing his entire repertoire of pitches. His fastball sat in the 91-93 mph range consistently for the duration of his outing. He did bump a 94 mph in the first, but the fastball lived in the low-90s overall. He did show what seemed to be a pair of different fastballs, a two-seam and four-seam. The pitches did not vary in velocity, however, but the two-seam did show above average life with the same velocity as the straighter four-seam pitch.

His arsenal also included a pair of off-speed pitches. The first one he showed, and the better of the two, was his changeup. The pitch was straight showing occasional dive, but the concerning aspect of the pitch was that it was not too much slower than the fastball. The pitch sat at 84-88 mph, but was mostly 86. The pitch was effective to get soft contact and swings and misses, but the velocity of the pitch is a concern moving forward. The slider showed average at this time in the low-80s.

Eichhorn had solid command in this game, but did miss with a few pitches down the middle and the strong hitting Coastal Carolina Chanticleers team made him pay. Giving up three home runs to the heart of the Chanticleers' order proved to be the difference in the game. Eichhorn took the loss after six innings, but the overall outing was not bad and Eichhorn still looks like a solid take for a team in this year’s draft.
