Sandlot 2018 keeps Upperclass Fall championship trophy in the Valley

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – It had already been a special summer on the Perfect Game tournament circuit for the Wilson Sandlot 2018 before what transpired on Monday in the west Phoenix suburbs. There was a championship at the PG WWBA 18u West Memorial Day Classic May 26-29 in the West Valley, followed-up the next weekend with a title at the PG WWBA 17u Qualifier in the East Valley. It turns out those might have just been appetizers ahead of the main course.

The Chandler-based and No. 5-seeded Sandlot 2018 were steady and sure from the first-pitch, and shutdown the No. 3 TB SoCal Gold from Los Angeles by a 4-0 count in the championship game at the PG WWBA Upperclass Fall National Championship Protected by G-Form played at Goodyear Ballpark.

The ‘Lot 2018 completed an impressive 7-0-0 run at the event to go alongside marks of 5-0-0 at both the PG WWBA WMDC and the PG WWBA 17u Q. That’s a 17-0 record for this team at three important PG-sanctioned western events; Monday’s championship proved to be the most satisfying of them all.

“The field in this weekend’s tournament was as good as it comes,” Sandlot 2018 head coach Kurt Vesecky said while his players were being fitted for their PG national championship tournament rings. “(TB SoCal Gold) is loaded – they’ve got guys going to UCLA and Michigan and Cal and all that kind of stuff – but we just battled all weekend.

"We had a 12-inning game (Sunday) with bases-loaded, one-out situations every (extra) inning with the tie-breaker, and these kids just continued to fight and fight and fight. I couldn’t be any more proud of these guys; they did an awesome job.”

The championship game was shaping up to be a pitchers’ duel until the Sandlot 2018 found the firepower to score three runs in the top of the fourth, which, as it turned out, was more than enough to send them on their way to the title. Bobby Meza Jr. singled and drove in a pair of runs, Colton Cassinelli – a No. 392-ranked 2018 who has committed to the U. of Washington and was the Most Valuable Player at the previous two PG tournaments this summer – delivered an RBI double; Tyler Cranston singled and drove in a run, with those performances pacing the ‘Lot 2018’s six-hit attack.

2018 right-hander Hayden Baker threw five innings of three-hit, shutout ball with two strikeouts and two walks to pick up the win; the TB SoCal Gold finished with four hits, all singles. Those came off the bats of Shawn Goosenberg, Chris Neveau, Keaton Carattini and Cary Arboliola who hit third, fourth, fifth and seventh in the batting order, but they could never bunch enough of them together to push a run across the plate.

The championship game appearance on the mound was the only one of the tournament for the 6-foot-2, 170-pound Baker, a U. of Pacific commit from Chandler, but it was good enough to earn him the Most Valuable Pitcher Award. Vesecky said he wished the award could go to the entire pitching staff based on outstanding outings by 2018 right-handers Jordan Bach, David Watson, Andrew Hayes, Chase Webster and Meza Jr., among others.

Speaking of Meza Jr., he made one appearance on the mound and worked 6 1/3, four-hit, shutout innings with six strikeouts and one walk. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound right-hander/third baseman and Yavapai College recruit out of Mesa was also 5-for-19 (.263) with a home run and a team-high 11 RBI at the plate, and was named the Most Valuable Player. He epitomized the attitude Vesecky expects from his players, especially when bracket-play rolls around.

“It’s a win-or-go-home mentality and these guys are brothers on the field as well as off the field and I think that’s a big part of it,” he said. “We’ve got some pitchers that are kind of on break right now and we picked up some guys from around the Valley to come join us, and we really had some guys who stepped-up.

"I couldn’t be more proud of their effort and what they did at this event. … Top-to-bottom, everybody on the team contributed and again, I just attribute that to the fact that they’re just brothers, both on and off the field.”

The Wilson Sandlot 2018 moved into the championship game posting a 5-2 victory over the No. 1 Aggies Baseball Upperclass (5-1-0) from Watsonville, Calif., in Monday morning semifinals. TB SoCal Gold got there by blanking No. 7 Chaminade College Prep (5-1-0) from Moorpark, Calif., in its semifinal contest.

The SoCal Gold earned the No. 3 seed by winning its three pool-play games by a combined 15-2. They then topped No. 19 All-Star Baseball Academy, 3-1, in the second-round of the playoffs before topping No. 11 CBA Marucci, 4-3, in the quarterfinals, both played Sunday afternoon. The Sandlot 2018 came in at No. 5 by coasting past their pool partners by a combined 18-4 and then topping the Quakes Baseball Academy, 10-2, and No. 4 GBG, 11-8 in 12 innings in 2nd-round and quarterfinal-round play, respectively.

When the chickens came home to roost after another long, hot day in the desert, the Sandlot 2018 took a lot of pride in keeping the championship trophy right here in the Valley. The Scottsdale-based AZ T-Rex Baseball Club Rawlings won the precursor to this event last year.

“If you look over the years it’s very rare for an Arizona team to win these events,” Vesecky said. “This is a very special group – the 2018 class is loaded in (the Phoenix area) and we come to play. We’re not afraid of anybody and, of course, we’re on our home turf so that makes it extra-special.”

Arizona 2021 tops Marucci 2021 in all-GBG final at Freshman Fall Championship

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Garciaparra Baseball Group (GBG) laid claim to Goodyear Ballpark Monday morning, and put on an entertaining show in the championship game at the PG WWBA Freshman Fall National Championship Protected by G-Form.

No. 1-seeded GBG Arizona 2021 used a well-played, well-pitched performance to sneak past No. 2 GBG Marucci 2021, 3-2, and claim the crown at the inaugural Freshman Fall National Championship. The Peoria-based Arizona 2021s finished with an unblemished 6-0-0 mark at the four-day event, while the Los Angeles-based Marucci 2021s ended up 4-1-1.

The fact that two GBG teams were playing for the title wasn’t lost on anyone, least of all Arizona 2021 head coach Mike Schiefelbein.

“That definitely was special,” he said after dozens of postgame photos had been snapped by parents and well-wishers, including one big GBG group shot the two teams posed for.

“It was a thought that just kind of seem to come together as we got closer. And as we got into bracket-play being the 1 and the 2 seed, we knew that we weren’t going to see them until possibly the championship game. When it kind of fell into place, it was special and it was fun.”

Arizona 2021 scored a single run in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the fourth while Marucci 2021 pushed across single runs in each of the top of the second and the fifth.

The Arizona kids totaled eight hits in the win, with Scott Wheeler and Michael Riley collecting two apiece. Wheeler, Tanner Smith and Andrew Biddle each drove in runs. Workhorse 2021 left-hander Carson Baker threw a complete-game four-hitter, allowing two earned runs while striking out seven and walking two.

Marucci 2021’s Jack Salmon accounted for two of Marucci 2021s four hits; Andre Meono and Joseph Tena each drove in a run apiece.

Smith, a 5-foot-8, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher/infielder from Chandler, was named the Most Valuable Player; he finished 7-for-17 (.412) with a double, two triples, a home run with eight RBI.

Baker, a 5-foot-8, 135-pound lefty from Peoria, made three appearances and worked 10 1/3 innings, and gave up five hits with 11 strikeouts and two walks. He picked up the championship game win and recorded a two-pitch save in Monday morning’s semifinal game.

GBG Arizona 2021 came into this tournament with a lot of momentum that was generated last weekend when it won the championship at the PGBA Freshman Fall National Championship Qualifier played at Cubs Park Riverview in Mesa, Ariz. After winning that tournament, the players refocused and put their minds to coming in here and winning this thing. And, most importantly, they got the job done.

“I know that we walked into this stadium, for most of these kids it was the first time for them being here in a stadium like this,” Schiefelbein said. “That’s special for them and I think they take away from it the hopes of maybe one day playing in this stadium, whether it be at the high school level or beyond.

“To have the opportunity to play here on the big stage, so to speak, is special for them and I think we played well all around, offensively, defensively and pitching,” he continued. “And it was a great game, right down to the wire; a good win.”

After a week of dominant performances, timely hitting, and resilient play, EBC 17U-Griggs capped off its run through the 2026 Perfect Game Hoover Invitational with a championship victory Monday, securing the program’s first tournament title of the summer. Despite a lengthy rain delay, EBC never lost focus, relying on contributions throughout the lineup and another strong pitching performance to secure the win. “This being our first [win] of the summer, we have an amazing group right here,” head coach Rodd Griggs said. “Some of the guys I’ve had for years, some of the guys just joined us this summer, but it’s an amazing group.” EBC’s championship performance reflected the depth that carried the club throughout the tournament. Paxton Wright set the tone of the mound, working four innings while allowing just two hits striking out two hitters....

JJ Utash (‘27, AZ) tripled to both gaps, collecting 3 RBI along the way. Big time strength. Balls jumps off the barrel to all fields. Good runner/athlete too. #HookEm commit #AZKickoff pic.twitter.com/h1SbsSxpMy — Perfect Game Four Corners (@PG_FourCorners) May 30, 2026 JJ Utash (2027, Gilbert, Ariz.) is the top-ranked player in the state and showed off why over the weekend. The Texas commit collected five hits, including a pair of doubles and a pair of triples. The mix of power and speed is impressive. The ball jumps off the barrel with ease to all fields. Utash consistently lifts balls with authority, resulting in loud in-game power. The speed on the bases stands out as well. Utash looks to be aggressive and can take extra bags when they present themselves. The tools are some of the loudest in the class and will draw considerable draft interest next July.  Soren...

Southeast Elite Scout Notes: Days 3-5

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Southeast Elite Scout Notes: Days 1-2 Auburn commit Brennan Neal (2027, Columbus, Ga.) had a good showing on Sunday on the mound, putting the clean, athletic delivery on display in an inning of work. Neal worked in the 90-93 range with the fastball with plenty of life, and showed some run to it when working to the arm side. Neal also worked in a tight slider in the upper 70s, but also showed confidence in a fading changeup in the mid 80s. Neal also has room to add strength to his lanky frame, which could be big for him to continue to add velocity. South Florida commit Taylor Casson (2026, Atlanta, Ga.) had an impressive showing on the hill with the stuff and results, going 5 innings of no-hit baseball with 10 strikeouts. The fastball worked in the 89-92 range with downhill angle and tail, and was in the zone often. He worked a 3-pitch mix, showing some impressive swing and miss stuff...

WWBA Scout Scout Notes: Days 1-2 Raylen Hunter (‘30 TX) stays living on the barrel; this one burning the CFer for a double. Just an electric ballplayer. #WWBASouth https://t.co/1LThRBqN80 pic.twitter.com/z5RF5dy47o — Perfect Game Texas (@Texas_PG) May 30, 2026 Raylen Hunter (2030, Cypress, Texas) took home MVP honors for the tournament and helped lead his team to a big championship win. Was a big standout on a loaded Banditos team that steamrolled their way to the championship. He ended the week going 10-16 with a pair of doubles while scoring ten runs atop the lineup. Hunter is a true spark plug who makes consistently hard contact line to line. The swing is short and works to all fields with plenty of twitch and bat speed. Bat to ball plays at an extremely high level as he rarely gets cheated never taking an at-bat off. Once on base, Hunter causes havoc on the base-paths, a...

High School Top 50 Update: June 2

Tyler Russo
Article Image
With another few weeks in the book of the high school season, we’ve already had state champions crowned with playoffs happening in some northern states. There have been some upsets so there has been a good amount of movement in the National High School Top-50. We have a new number-one this update with Tomball (TX) taking over the top spot and will be playing for a state championship this week. They sport a 42-1 record heading into the title game and have been one of the best teams from start to finish this year. St. John Bosco (CA) has now gone back-to-back with Trinity League and CIF Southern Section titles and take over the No. 2 spot. No. 3 Aledo (TX) continues to win, No. 4 Trinity (KY) has been dominant in Kentucky play and No. 5 Norco (CA) lost the Southern Section title game and had a great year. Magnolia Heights (MS) moves up a few spots to No. 8 after winning their 8th...

Will Dembo

In a highly anticipated matchup between two of the nation’s top 17u teams, the East Cobb Astros defeated eXposure National 9-8 in a thrilling extra-inning battle to claim the PG Southeast Elite Championship. The Astros completed the weekend undefeated, opening their summer season with a hard-fought, statement victory. “I mean, it's fun, it's been a grind today,” said Astros Head Coach, Josh Burress. “Been out here a long day, but our guys are competitors, they come out compete, they want to compete and win, so it's just fun to watch them come out here and not quitting playing to the end... so the guys did very well today, and they competed all the way through.” eXposure began the opening frame by taking the early lead on an error but quickly gave their lead away as the Astros came out of the gates hot, plating six runs in just the first inning. Leanderson Argueta (2027, Panamá) absolutely outmatched every arm he faced this weekend ending up with seven hits, five of which were doubles and also hit a three run home run in game three. In the fifth inning against Freshwater Storm National Argueta got his pitch and deposited it over the wall for a go ahead three run home run. Showed real comfort in the box and was able to repeat the stroke well. Fires his hips with intent and the direct bat path plays to all parts of the park.  Jayden Pagan (2028, St. Cloud, Fla.) would not be denied this weekend slashing .500/.684/1.434. The championship game was no different for Pagan getting a first pitch heater and scorched it into left for an rbi triple. He would later add a double in the seventh inning that carried over the center fielders head. The bat to ball skills paired with his up the middle approach translate. The 2028...

A mostly clear day at Lee Health Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida set the stage for a tightly contested championship matchup between Florida Burn 2028 Myrback and Turn 2 Garcia. Behind two triples from Quinn Seglem, Turn 2 rallied for a 5-4 victory to claim the BCS Qualifier title. Left-hander Carter Brunco started on the mound for Turn 2, allowing six hits and four walks while striking out two over 3.2 innings. Burn jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Cali Mid-Major Draft Notes

Joey Cohen
Article Image
California annually produces its share of high-profile prep and college draft talent, but this spring also offered quality depth especially on the mid-major side. I wanted to highlight a group of semi under-the-radar prospects who have quietly put together strong seasons and caught the attention of our staff whether it was with in-person looks or just by some performance/data metrics that popped. The bulk of this group comes out of the Big West, with additional names from the WCC, WAC, and Mountain West mixed in. Matthew Thomas - OF - CSUN  Few hitters in the Big West have matched Thomas’ offensive impact this spring, as he slashed a strong .335/.411/.679 with 15 home runs. Long and still mostly viewed as a power-first profile, he’s taken a meaningful step forward in the hit tool, cutting down a bit on significant swing-and-miss concerns while increasing his on-base...
