National High School Top 50: April 25

With the new edition of the Top 50 out there is a new No. 1 team in the land: Huntington Beach (Calif.). Deciding on the new No. 1 team was not an easy feat, as all three members of the current top 3 had compelling cases.

Shawnee (Okla.) moves to No. 2 as they are in the midst of an undefeated season, have not lost since April of 2016 and are trying to win a third straight state title. Winder-Barrow (Ga.) holds water at the No. 3 spot following a sweep in the first round of the GHSA state playoffs. Winder-Barrow has only two losses on the season, boasts one of the fiercest offenses in the country and showed well at the NHSI a month ago.

Archbishop McCarthy (Fla.) and Christopher Columbus (Fla.) round out the top five and will look to finish season strong as the FHSAA state playoffs begin this weekend. That itself resonates a theme we will be seeing as the high school season starts to come to a close with the beginning of the state playoffs. Numerous teams will be rising, falling or dropping out depending on how they perform against the toughest competition in-state.

West Monroe (La.) has already advanced to the quarterfinals in the Louisiana state playoffs while all three Alabama teams are in the quarterfinals as well. Cullman (Ala.) and Decatur (Ala.) face off in a three-game set to advance to the final four and also to decide who the top Alabama team in the PG/Rawlings National High School Top 50 will be.

Newcomers to the top 50 include Jackson (Ohio) at No. 39, New Hanover (N.C.) at No. 42, Sumter (S.C.) at No. 49, and Jefferson County (Mo.) at No. 50. Walton (Ga.) and Deer Creek (Okla.) rejoin the rankings at Nos. 38 and 44, respectively.
