Spring League Week 2 Recap

Week 2 of the Iowa Spring League is in the books.  Week 2 was marred by wet conditions which led to re-scheduling of games at Independence High School.  Big thanks to coach Travis Walker and A.D. Justin Putz for coming through on such short notice.  For those of you who haven't been, it is a beautiful new complex with a turfed infield.  On to the recap!

Probst dominant in first outing of the spring

Ben Probst (2017 - Dowling Catholic) made his Spring League debut Sunday and didn't disappoint.  Probst pitched at 90-91 MPH with his fastball and touched 92 MPH once.  He located his fastball well and is showing improving command.  He also threw a sharp curveball for strikes at 77 MPH.  Probst picked up where he left off in February at the Pitcher/Catcher Indoor Showcase and looks to continue on that track though the spring.  He struck out 5 in his 2 innings of work while not allowing a base runner.

Connor Schultz with Connor Schultz-like outing

Connor Schultz (2017 - Cedar Falls) had a typical Connor Schultz like outing pitching at 85-88 MPH with his fastball and pounded the strike zone at a 77.3% rate.  He averaged 11 pitches per inning, threw 85.7% first pitch strikes, allowed 1 hit, walked 0, and struck out 3.  The velocity projects and he threw 3 pitches for strikes.  Schultz has a feel for 3 pitches and consistently pounds the zone in every outing I've ever seen him throw.

Swanda puts up zeros

John Swanda (2017 - Roosevelt) put up zeros in his 2 innings of work.  He pitched at 86-88 MPH with his fastball and didn't allow a hit.  He struck out 3 and walked 1 and threw 4 of 7 first pitch strikes.  He's got more in the tank and should make steady gains throughout the spring.

Patzner up to 89

Luke Patzner (2018 - Urbandale) looked good in his 2 innings of work pitching steady at 87-89 MPH with his fastball.  He located much better than Week 1 and also showed a much better feel for his curveball.  He was also every efficient averaging 13 pitches per inning.

McCay with dominant outing

Nic McCay (2018 - Carlisle) was dominant in his 2 innings of work striking out 5 while averaging 12.5 pitches per inning.  He pitched steady at 83-86 MPH with his fastball and threw his sharp curveball for strikes.  He didn't allow a base runner and threw 72% strikes.

Van Scoyoc puts up zeros

Connor Van Scoyoc (2018 - Jefferson) put up a couple of zeros in his 2 innings of work while topping out at 88 MPH.  He struck out 5 while not allowing a hit.  Van Scoyoc showed good sink on his fastball and effectively missed barrels.

Nettleton battles

Clayton Nettleton (2018 - Davenport West) battled in his 2 innings of work and put up zeros.  He didn't have his usual command but pitched well enough to get through.  He topped at 88 MPH with his fastball and made the adjustment to get through his outing unscathed.

Reifert up to 90

Evan Reifert (2017 - Wilton) pitched at 88-90 MPH in his first inning of work and was dominant in the first inning.  He showed an explosive fastball that got on hitters and also showed a good curveball in inning one.  He struggled a bit in his second inning of work, but what he showed in the first inning of work is what makes people take notice of what he could develop into.

Comellas with dominant inning on mound

Tony Comellas (2018 - Iowa City West) went 3 up 3 down with 3 strikeouts in his lone inning of work.  He pitched steady at 84-85 MPH and threw 75% strikes.  The velocity projects and his off-speed stuff is continually getting better.

Brown with another quality outing

Trever Brown (2018 - Don Bosco) had another quality outing throwing 79.2% strikes and allowing no hits in 2 innings of work.  He averaged 12 pitches per inning and struck out 3.  He topped at 84 MPH with his fastball with more velocity to come.

Lux makes first weekend splash with 6 RBI

Gabe Lux (2018 - Xavier) swung the bat very well collecting 2 hits and 6 RBI on the day.  He has a short swing with good bat speed and barrel skills.

Ono-Fullard swung it well

Izaya Ono-Fullard (2017 - Iowa City West) swung the bat well collecting 2 hits on the day.  He hit a hard double to the opposite field and also battled in his last at bat which resulted in a single.  He showed why he's the top hitter in Iowa in the 2017 class.

Rolffs with good all around game

Jaden Rolffs (2018 - Pella) showed why he's one of the top hitters in Iowa in the 2018 class making consistent hard contact.  He just missed a home run to center field with loud contact off the bat.  He also played well defensively behind the plate and absolutely hosed a runner attempting a steal of third base.

Vander Molen with good day at the plate

Kade Vander Molen (2018 - Pella Christian) collected 2 hits with a double for the Grey Wolves.  Vander Molen has shown improving tools across the board and made good barrel contact.  He also has played solid defensively and has been up to 85 MPH on the mound.

McKown collects 2 hits for Blue Crew

Ryan McKown (2020 - Davenport West) showed good young hitting tools at the plate and collected 2 hits in the game.  He's shown a good approach at the plate and good skills the past 2 weeks.

Dawson Weller (2027, Ottumwa, IA) showcased his two-way potential with a strong performance this weekend. On the mound, worked two clean innings while striking out 3 consistently living in the zone and getting ahead with first-pitch strikes. Showed the ability to control tempo and attack hitters throughout the outing. At the plate made a big impact in the same game, collecting two doubles and a home run. Displays quick hands through the zone with the ability to connect on an uphill path and generate carry off the barrel. A well-rounded showing that highlighted impact on both sides of the ball. Will Frederiksen (2026, Bettendorf, IA) had a loud weekend at the plate, launching 2 home runs and showing real impact with the bat. Generates plenty of juice in the swing with a simple, controlled load that allows him to stay on time. The swing works clean through the zone and produces strong...

2030 SS Cash Kelly (Franklin, Tenn.) is a buzzing name this summer as someone who is off to a fast start and looks the part as one of the better pure hitters in this class. He’s very comfortable in the box, showing an innate feel to find the barrel (and limit swing-and-miss) while the hands are fast and he can really accelerate the barrel. Defensively he has been excellent making plays look easy, showing nice range and enough arm for the left side. Add in the fact that he’s a strong runner and you have someone that can impact the game a ton. 2030 SS/RHP Trey Vandergriff (Milton, Ga.) got a couple innings of work at the back end of East Cobb’s first game and looked awesome, striking out 5 of the 6 hitters he faced with big stuff. He sat 85-88, showing dynamic arm speed and a really athletic delivery, while the breaking ball feel stood out, showing he can land it in any...

MLB Draft Reports: 400-500

Michael Albee
Article Image
MLB Draft Board: Top 500 400. Michael Barnett, RHP, UCLA R-R, 6-4/210, Lafayette, CA Previously Drafted: Never Drafted Michael Barnett has started games over the last four years for the Bruins, including 44 starts over the past three seasons. The fastball does not overpower hitters, but can generate ground balls at a high rate. A heavy fading changeup is the primary secondary pitch and plus offering. Barnett will use it often and miss bats at a high clip with it. A low-80’s slider adds a third offering. Barnett does not generate a ton of strikeouts, but pounds the zone and fills innings.  401. Connor Marshburn, RHP, UNC Wilmington R-R, 6-6/240, Cary, NC Previously Drafted: Never Drafted Connor Marshburn features an XL frame at 6-foot-6, 240-pounds. The right-hander throws from a low slot and attacks hitters with an east/west mix. The fastball works up to 94 mph with armside...

Aiden Weishaar (2029, Geneso, Ill.) physical power bat put together one of the most productive offensive performances of the event, showing big impact off the barrel with advanced strength and leverage through the swing. Collected six hits including two doubles and two home runs while driving in 13 runs, consistently doing damage in run-producing situations. Creates loud contact with present pull-side juice and projects for significant power as the frame and strength continue to mature. Middle of the order offensive profile with the ability to change the game with one swing. Also stood out on the mound with a dominant 7 inning performance, punching out 11 hitters while working efficiently throughout the outing. Fastball ran up to 86 mph with good life through the zone and showed the ability to consistently attack hitters and miss bats. Highly intriguing two-way prospect whose combination...

Road to the 2026 17U BCS Title

Emily Hicks
Article Image
This weekend, 11 teams will take the field for the 2026 17U BCS Challenge, a three-day event that brings together programs from across the country for a full slate of pool play and bracket action. With games beginning Friday and a champion crowned Sunday, the format leaves little room for slow starts, making every inning important from the opening pitch. The field features a mix of established programs and rising teams. With so many evenly matched rosters, there’s not much separation heading into the weekend, which puts importance on pitching depth, defensive consistency, and timely hitting. Pool play will quickly determine seeding, and even one loss can shift a team’s path heading into bracket play. One of the teams expected to be in the mix is Hawaii Elite 2G 17U National, a group that is 6-3 overall and ranked as “Honorable Mention” on the Perfect Games...
