2017 Perfect Game High School Preview Index

Welcome back to another season of the Perfect Game and Rawlings National High School Team Rankings. Our initial rankings for the 2017 season are listed below.

Orange Lutheran (Calif.) enters the 2017 season ranked No. 1 in the country, and they boast a very talented and deep roster. Led by senior outfielder Garrett Mitchell, a PG All-American and UCLA signee, the lineup is loaded with high-end talent. Senior infielder Tristan Hanoian, a TCU recruit, and underclassmen Sawyer Chesley (Arizona) and Jasiah Dixon (USC) round out the middle of the lineup and should provide a lot of value on both offense and defense. The pitching staff is a bit young but they are led by senior lefthander Jason Farese, a San Diego signee, to anchor the rotation. With some younger contributions on the pitching staff, Orange Lutheran slots in as our No. 1 team for the season.

Familiar top programs round out the rest of the top 5 with Dallas Jesuit (Texas), Archbishop McCarthy (Fla.), Chaparral (Ariz.) and Huntington Beach (Calif.) all boasting elite talent and depth. All five of these teams have claims to be the top team in the country, and Dallas Jesuit and Archbishop McCarthy both came home with state championships last season. These five teams look to be competing for state championships this season and includes a big early season California matchup between No. 1 Orange Lutheran and No. 5 Huntington Beach in early March.

The states that are the usual suspects in terms of baseball hotbeds are well represented. California has the most schools with 11, Florida has nine while Texas and Georgia each have five schools. Although these four states make up a large portion of the rankings, 20 states are represented throughout the Top 50 preseason rankings.

Among the Top 50, 18 of the programs are reigning state champions. Dallas Jesuit, Archbishop McCarthy, Barbe (La.), Walton (Ga.), and Marjory Stoneman Douglas (Fla.) all come in the top 10 and are defending their state titles.

The 16 other states represented are from all reaches of the country. The Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest are all well-represented and should be very competitive regions.

Five Perfect Game All-Americans go to schools listed on among the top 10 teams. Garrett Mitchell (Orange Lutheran), Alejandro Toral (Archbishop McCarthy), Jacob Gonzalez (Chaparral), Mark Vientos (American Heritage) and Brady McConnell (Merritt Island) all participated in the PG All-American Game at Petco Park in San Diego last August and will look to carry their top-tier talent into the high school baseball season.

The rankings will fluctuate as the season begins and especially once the Northern teams start later in the spring. Many teams will rise and some will fall, but altogether the rankings will change once the teams start playing. The season is right around the corner and we hope you are as excited for the season to begin as we are.

PHILADELPHIA – When the folks at Perfect Game reached out to invite him to pitch in the 2026 PG All-Star Game for rising sophomores and juniors, Cullen Scott had one request. “You mind if I get a couple of at-bats, too?” Along with his dad, Scott traveled from the family’s home in Texas to Citizens Bank Park. The trip proved to be a huge success as he starred on the mound and at the plate and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Scott, 16, pitched a scoreless first inning and struck out two. WWBA Sophomore Scout Notes: Day 1 Rhys Jones (2029, Mc Lean, Va.) was absolutely dominant on the bump to start off day 2 hanging an impressive 10 strikeouts in 5 innings. Running the heater up to 84 with arm side run and the breaking ball got swings and misses. The strike percentage stayed right over 55%, and he carried a no hitter into the 6th. Easy arm action with a high 3/4 slot and controls the move down the rubber.  Jevan McMenamy (2029, Fargo, N.D.) was all around solid today tallying two hits, an rbi, and a walk. In the box he works to the middle of the field in the approach and can elevate to all fields. Coils deep into the back hip and works through contact with strength. Quick feet around the bases and the barrel is fast.  Khian Escalana (2029, Ankeny, Iowa) was a heavy producer in this one collecting three hits, two of those being doubles. The corner infielder blasted an absolute no-doubter out to left field, exploding off of the barrel and soaring deep into the night sky. The ball came off with a 101 MPH exit velocity and traveled 424 feet, bouncing across the street. Mills is built extra strong and physical, creating easy strength. Joshua Digulio (2027, Mont Belvieu, Texas) was a breakout performer for Texas Brigade 2027 - Gafford. Went 10-18 with a pair of doubles and a home run, while plating nine runs. Also showed some serious flashes defensively behind the plate. Physical frame with plenty of bat speed. Flatter bat path with a pull-side approach, geared towards backspinning with authority. Athletic backstop with tons of offensive upside. Dylan Buck (2027, Friendswood, Texas) put on a show for Up Top Prospects. Drove in 11 runs while going 5-11 with a pair of triples and a multi home run game on Saturday. Loose actions with a strong lower half. Adjusts well and generates plenty of torque as he works uphill. 2026 PG Softball Twin Cities Elite Scouting Showcase September 19th, 2026 Ashley Mears BLAINE, MN- Rain may have shortened the weekend but it didn’t shorten the competition. The tournament was STACKED with some of the top teams from South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.
