2016 Perfect Game/Rawlings College Coach of the Year Finalists

Perfect Game’s 2016 College Baseball Coach of the Year award will be announced after the completion of the 2016 College World Series. Unlike the Player, Pitcher and Freshman of the Year awards, the honors for the top coach is still contingent on the play on the field, which includes whatever transpires in Omaha.

With that, here are the 13 finalists:

Mike Gambino, Boston College (35-22)
2016 Finish: Coral Gables Super Regional
Gambino took the ACC's northernmost program, and the one with the league's worst facility, to the Super Regional round for the first time in school history. The Eagles advanced to game three of the Super Regional, just one win from Omaha.

Kevin O'Sullivan, Florida (52-14)
2016 Finish: College World Series
In a year with enormous draft pressure for a highly regarded junior class and a bulls eye on his team's back due to an unanimous preseason No. 1 ranking, O'Sullivan guided the Gators to Omaha once again. Florida has advanced to the CWS an astounding five times in the last seven seasons under O'Sullivan.

Tim Tadlock, Texas Tech (46-18)
2016 Finish: College World Series
Prior to Tadlock Texas Tech had never been to Omaha in school history and now they are going for the second time in three years. Tadlock also guided the Red Raiders to a Big 12 title.

John Cohen, Mississippi State (44-18-1)
2016 Finish: Starkville Super Regional
Mississippi State went from 14th place in the SEC to first place (Regular Season Champions) in just one calendar year, despite the loss of highly regarded pitching coach Butch Thompson. The Bulldogs also earned a Top 8 National Seed.

Chad Holbrook, South Carolina (46-18)
2016 Finish: Columbia Super Regional
South Carolina missed the NCAA tournament in 2015 and Holbrook needed to rebuild both his rotation (without the services of injured arms Wil Crowe and Cody Morris) and the middle of the order for 2016. The Gamecocks rebounded to win the SEC East and advance to a Super Regional.

Jim Schlossnagle, Texas Christian (47-16)
2016 Finish: College World Series
Since 2010, Schlossnagle has taken four different teams and two different coaching staffs to the CWS. TCU is the only team in the nation that has been to Omaha in each of the last three seasons.

Andrew Checketts, UC Santa Barbara (42-18-1)
2016 Finish: College World Series
UCSB lost 10 players to the 2015 MLB draft, including the No. 4 overall pick Dillon Tate. In what was supposed to be a rebuilding year, the Gauchos, who finished third in the Big West, are headed to Omaha for the first time in school history.

Gary Gilmore, Coastal Carolina (49-16)
2016 Finish: College World Series
Gilmore has built the Coastal Carolina program into a mid-major power and the Chants third trip to Super Regionals was the charm. Gilmore's club just missed being a Regional Host and needed a ninth-inning comeback to win a Regional game seven over NC State. Winning a Super Regional in Baton Rouge isn't exactly a lay up either.

Bill Kinneberg, Utah (26-29)
2016 Finish: Oxford Regional
Utah had a difficult transition to the Pac-12, finishing dead last in 11th place in three consecutive seasons. Despite beginning the year 5-12, Kinneberg rallied the Utes to a Pac-12 championship in 2016.

Jay Johnson, Arizona (44-21)
2016 Finish: College World Series
In his first year in Tucson, Johnson took over a program that had not been to Regionals since the National Championship season of 2012. With four seniors having their best years at Arizona, this team won both a road Regional and road Super Regional to advance to Omaha.

Josh Holliday, Oklahoma State (41-20)
2016 Finish: College World Series
In his fourth year as the head coach of his alma mater, Holliday leads the Cowboys back to Omaha for the first time since 1999, which was his senior year in Stillwater. This was not an easy trip however as Oklahoma State suffered four straight walkoff losses early in the year, followed by a four-game home losing streak around the midseason point, and then rebounded to win a Regional at Clemson and a Super Regional at South Carolina.

Monte Lee, Clemson (44-20)
2016 Finish: Clemson Regional
It's never easy taking over for a legend and Lee rallied this club to a Top 8 National Seed despite losing two of the best freshman in the country (Cal Raleigh and Jackson Kowar) in the coaching transition.

Jim Morris, Miami (50-12)
2016 Finish: College World Series
Miami has now made the College World Series for the second year in a row, which also marks Morris’ 13th as the Hurricanes skipper. Last year’s appearance was the first since 2008, and Morris has guided Miami to two of the program’s four CWS titles (1999, 2001).

Others considered:

Rob Childress, Texas A&M
Mark Machtoff, Gonzaga
Eric Valenzuela, Saint Mary’s
Chris Pollard, Duke
Cliff Godwin, East Carolina
Steve Owens, Bryant
John Anderson, Minnesota
Greg Beals, Ohio State

Vincent Cervino

With a postseason run for the ages, the Oklahoma Sooners (43-23) took home the National Championship and naturally finish the 2026 season as our No. 1 team in the land.  It is the third national title for the Sooners, playing in their 12th CWS and making their fourth championship series appearance.  They add to previous national titles won in 1951 and 1994 and did it by taking the most difficult path of any team in this year’s tournament.  In the NCAA Tournament, Oklahoma took down national seeds, No. 2 Georgia Tech twice, No. 3 Georgia twice, No. 5 UNC twice, No. 7 Alabama and No. 15 Kansas twice.  This was the second time that head coach Skip Johnson has led the Sooners to the CWS Championship Series since 2022 and the first time he has taken home the crown.  The North Carolina Tarheels (54-14) was one win away from their first national title and finish...

13u World Series Notes: Days 1-2

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Michael Wedgeworth (2030, Flomaton, AL) had put the two way ability on full display so far this week, dominating from both sides. On the mound Wedgeworth ran the fastball up to 84 (81-83) with ease to the delivery. Broke off a couple nasty curveballs that induced swing and miss, as well as freezing hitters for punch outs. Collected six in his four inning complete game. He also would not be denied at the plate going 3-5 in the first two days with two doubles. Very intriguing young player as the body continues to grow.  Tyler Bellush (2031, Summerville, SC) is a sure handed shortstop for the Canes Nation squad. Swings it from the left side of the plate and the barrel accuracy has really stuck out thus far. 3-4 through the first couple days with a double and two triples, Bellush has also walked twice and collected 3 RBI along the way. Yesterday against USA Prime with the bases loaded,...

Oliver Lindstrom (2028, Green Bay, WI) created some of the loudest offensive moments of the weekend while producing across the board, finishing with six hits, eight RBI, and a home run. The right-handed hitter showed the ability to stay through the baseball and drive it with authority. Creates quality leverage through the lower half while arriving in strong hitting positions early, allowing the barrel to work with intent through the zone. The blend of power, athleticism, and all-fields impact stood out throughout the event.  Dominic Haigh (2028, South Bend, IN) was one of the most productive hitters at the event, collecting 10 hits while consistently creating pressure on opposing defenses. Made life difficult on pitchers with a relentless approach, routinely extending at-bats and forcing them to work deep into counts. The operation remains simple and efficient, featuring an early...

Walter Izquierdo Jr. (2031, Miami, Fla.) showed off the upside on the mound for Beast Baseball 13u. The right-handed pitcher went four innings and collected three strikeouts while spreading two hits and two walks for one run. The fastball topped out at 80 and was consistently in the upper- 70s. Showed feel for a curveball with 12-6 shape and some looser vertical depth that was able to get weak contact. Competes in the zone well and showed some feel to work on the arm-side half of the plate. Intriguing upside on the young arm.   Brett Hamlin (2031, Jupiter, Fla.) showed off the barrel feel for FTB American 13u. The left-handed hitter collected nine hits, including two doubles and a triple, to drive in seven RBI. Strong hands and flips the hips well to create good bat speed. Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

JK Select Hawaii Tackles 14u West WS

Emily Hicks
Article Image
JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....
