Perfect Game Junior College Top 25: May 3

We’re a week into the month of May and that means it’s finally time to start switching gears and get ready for postseason Junior College action. Only a handful of teams have already begun their postseason slate of games, so we have listed in this updated rankings when each team will be playing in the next week or two.

The top 5 remains unchanged with San Jacinto (44-10) holding court in the top spot followed by Santa Fe (38-7), LSU-Eunice (50-4), Neosho County (45-9) and McLennan (45-10) respectively.

While a lot of teams didn’t play at all this past week there wasn’t too much movement in the top part of our rankings, but we did take notice of LSU-Eunice traveling to Florida and playing some of the heavy hitters in that state with their games against Chipola (ranked 6th), St. Johns River (7th) and Gulf Coast (24). All three of those teams have been highly ranked throughout the year and will be dangerous opponents in tournament play. Eunice lost 2-1 to Chipola before coming back on Saturday to defeat St. Johns River 10-8 and later in the day knocked off Gulf Coast 4-3. It was a very impressive ending to the Bengals’ regular season.

Jumping into the top 10 this week is Santa Rosa (31-7) who won two of three this weekend to advance from the Northern California Regional and into the Super Regional out west. They will look to keep their impressive season going starting on Friday against a solid Folsom Lake team.

One of the bigger stories of the week was the surprising loss from John A. Logan who was knocked off in its regional tournament by Lake Land and ended their season. Logan finishes 2016 with a 44-11 record and drops from 9th to 22nd in our rankings for now.

Wabash Valley (43-11) has now won 20 straight games and continues its ascent to the top of the rankings. They climb nine spots this week and now sit 16th with no signs of slowing down. They take their winning streak into the Region 24 Tournament which kicks off on Friday the 13th.

Even with the light schedules this past week, we did see three teams drop out of the rankings. Saddleback, Central Arizona and Spartanburg Methodist all lost in postseason play in the past few days. Spartanburg Methodist still has a heartbeat though as they still qualify for their Regional Tournament.

Two new California teams enter the rankings this week with Chaffey (29-9) coming in at No. 21 and Grossmont (29-10) sitting 24th. Both of them have advanced to the Southern California Super Regionals and could potentially face each other down the road.
