Georgia Tech 3, No. 5 North Carolina 2

After getting swept in the opening weekend of ACC play, the Georgia Tech Jackets swept their last weekend series against Virginia Tech before entering this weekend against No. 5 North Carolina. Riding the momentum off their sweep of the Hokies and a nice midweek win against Kennesaw State, Coach Danny Hall’s club was able to take game one at Boshamer Field by the final score of 3-2.

Getting the start for Georgia Tech was junior righthander Brandon Gold who’s put together one of the better seasons thus far rather quietly. Despite being listed as a primary infielder, and he has had his fair share of at-bats so far this spring, Gold very much performed like a Friday night guy for the Jackets tonight as he mixed three pitches for strikes, showing comfort for each while maintaining his velocity into the eighth inning upon his departure.

Improving to 3-1 on the year, the 6-foot-3, 203-pound Gold opened the game popping 92s with his fastball before settling into the 89-91 mph range, the same range he showed from the first inning to the last. Despite caving some on his back side drive Gold was still able to consistently work on top of the ball and pound downhill thanks to his short and quick arm action is coming through the back side. Not only was he able to work down, but he located down to his glove side with comfort while showing a clean release and angle to the pitch out of his hand. His fastball command and life kept him in good counts throughout the night as he issued just one walk, and a total of eight on the year, but it was his secondary that were he put away offerings.
