Auburn 14, Georgia Tech 3

Matt Czechanski was able to attend Tuesday’s midweek contest between ACC/SEC foes, Georgia Tech and Auburn. His primary purpose was to bear down on a pair of hitters, Auburn’s surging five-tool talent Anfernee Greir, who is generating more and more buzz in regards to this year’s MLB Draft, and former PG All-American Kel Johnson.

Anfernee Grier, OF, Auburn

The highly athletic Grier stands at 6-foot-1, 180-pounds with a lean and wiry build that has a surprising amount of strength. Grier is a plus runner down the line and in the outfield, gliding to balls in pre-game warmups. He was not tested in game but showed good first-step instincts on balls hit to the gap.

At the plate, Grier showed plus bat speed and loose wrists with a line drive plane through the zone. He delivered a pair of hard hit balls including a double to left-center field and a single down the left field line. He has some power in his swing, but it is more geared to line drive contact with a gap-to-gap approach. Grier also did well to generate extension towards the outside part of the plate. He did struggle with timing his barrel release, resulting in numerous foul balls.

His approach at the plate was patient, as he worked a walk and was also hit by a pitch, but showed the ability to lay off bad spin. He looked for a fastball and when one came inside or over the heart of the plate he had no problem driving it.

Kel Johnson, OF, Georgia Tech

The much more physical Johnson stands at 6-foot-4, 214 pounds with strength spread throughout his frame. With his athletic build he could even stand to add additional weight. What Johnson is known for is his power in his bat with the aforementioned strength and bat speed, something that dates back to his early high school days as a former PG All-American.

He put on an impressive display in batting practice working all fields with power and putting several balls in to the trees beyond the outfield wall. In game his actual bat-to-ball ability hinders him with driving the ball in the air.

Johnson did deliver a pair of doubles in the game, the first a groundball past the diving third basemen and the second was of the line drive variety. His swing does get long at times, but when he stays inside slightly more it allows him to work all fields.

Defensively he misplayed one ball, bobbling a single that allowed an additional run to score. However, he showed average arm strength from right field with accurate throws to the bag.

Brian Fasel throws out the ceremonial first pitch prior to Monday’s Pepperdine/Columbia game in Malibu

Pepperdine 11, Columbia 3 (Monday)

Columbia played a four-game wrap-around series against Pepperdine in Malibu this past weekend with Steve Fiorindo in attendance to catch the fourth and final game.

Easton Lucas, a freshman lefthander, took the mound to start the game for Pepperdine. He worked five strong innings, with a projectable 6-foot-4, 176-pound frame, an easy delivery and a short arm-stroke. His fastball worked in the 87-89 range early on before settling in to the mid-80s. He did a nice job mixing in a low- to mid-70s curveball that showed good shape as well as an upper-70s changeup.

Max Gamboa showed the best stuff of the Pepperdine arms that took the mound, working a scoreless ninth thanks to a 91-93 mph fastball that showed good arm-side run and sink. His body is similarly projectable to Lucas’ (6-foot-4, 175) and he also showed a promising 82 mph slider that elicited a swing-and-miss strikeout. He also throws a changeup in longer outings and could be an option to start moving forward given his size, stuff and three-pitch mix.

Pepperdine’s shortstop Manny Jefferson is very athletic with quick and easy actions. He has a very slender yet tall 6-foot-3, 180-pound high-waisted build and in this game went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, one RBI and three runs scored.

For Columbia second baseman and leadoff hitter Will Savage set the tone on offense. Prior to the game he showed a good approach during batting practice, displaying a line drive, gap-to-gap approach. In the game he showed good range by making a catch down the right field line behind first base and also showed good range by making a play deep to his back hand. His advanced approach led to him jumping all over a pitch in the second for a three-run home run, his first of the year, after leading off the game with a single in the first.

Harrisen Egly stood out on the mound for Columbia in more ways than one. With a pro-sized 6-foot-5, 200-pound frame Egly displayed a presence on the mound, working exclusively with a 89-91 mph fastball in a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

National Notes

• There were several intriguing matchups across the country on Tuesday night, especially between notable in-state rivals. No. 8 North Carolina visited East Carolina in Greenville and greeted them rudely with a big 17-4 win as the Tar Heels continue to dominate their competition. There were no shortage of offensive heroes for UNC starting with leadoff hitter Brian Miller had another three hit game, which included a two-run triple, and he scored three runs. No. 2 hitter Adam Pate went 2-for-5 with four RBI, three of which came on a bases-clearing double in the team’s eight-run second. Tyler Linn led off the second with a solo shot and Tyler Ramirez later added a three-run bomb.

• No. 1 Florida hosted No. 11 Florida State and continued to show their dominance in all phases of the game, winning 6-0. Dane Dunning provided yet another gem during the team’s midweek games with 5 2/3 scoreless innings while freshman Jackson Kowar provided two near-perfect frames. Pete Alonso continued to swing a red-hot bat, going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and a big two-run home run in the third inning. J.J. Schwarz was 3-for-5 with a run and one driven in.

• Michael Barash hit a walkoff home run as No. 3 Texas A&M defeated Texas, 5-4, in dramatic fashion to move to 16-1 on the year. The Longhorns provided some late game drama of their own as they had yet to score a run heading into the ninth inning. Former PG All-American Kody Clemens hit a two-run double to cut the lead in half before Bret Boswell tied the game up with a two-run single. Aggies starter Brigham Hill was in line to pick up the win, scattering six hits and a walk while striking out five over seven scoreless innings.

13u World Series Notes: Days 1-2

Perfect Game Staff

Michael Wedgeworth (2030, Flomaton, AL) had put the two way ability on full display so far this week, dominating from both sides. On the mound Wedgeworth ran the fastball up to 84 (81-83) with ease to the delivery. Broke off a couple nasty curveballs that induced swing and miss, as well as freezing hitters for punch outs. Collected six in his four inning complete game. He also would not be denied at the plate going 3-5 in the first two days with two doubles. Very intriguing young player as the body continues to grow.  Tyler Bellush (2031, Summerville, SC) is a sure handed shortstop for the Canes Nation squad. Swings it from the left side of the plate and the barrel accuracy has really stuck out thus far. 3-4 through the first couple days with a double and two triples, Bellush has also walked twice and collected 3 RBI along the way. Yesterday against USA Prime with the bases loaded,...

Oliver Lindstrom (2028, Green Bay, WI) created some of the loudest offensive moments of the weekend while producing across the board, finishing with six hits, eight RBI, and a home run. The right-handed hitter showed the ability to stay through the baseball and drive it with authority. Creates quality leverage through the lower half while arriving in strong hitting positions early, allowing the barrel to work with intent through the zone. The blend of power, athleticism, and all-fields impact stood out throughout the event.  Dominic Haigh (2028, South Bend, IN) was one of the most productive hitters at the event, collecting 10 hits while consistently creating pressure on opposing defenses. Made life difficult on pitchers with a relentless approach, routinely extending at-bats and forcing them to work deep into counts. The operation remains simple and efficient, featuring an early...

West Region Rankings Risers: Class of 2028

Joey Cohen
Article Image
After a heavy stretch of early summer looks, our scouting staff felt confident rolling out an updated ‘28 national ranking a couple weeks ago. The evaluation window was packed whether it was with our Memorial Day and Summer Kickoff tournaments, UBC action, Sunshine Showcases, and of course the Junior National Showcase which all provided a deep and diverse look at the class against strong competition. Between fresh game evaluations and updated showcase data, we were able to get a clearer picture of where players stand and more importantly how they’ve progressed. Improvements in strength, athleticism, and overall skill were evident across the board giving our staff real conviction when it came time to shuffle the board. With that in mind, I wanted to highlight a handful of west region prospects who made a strong impression on me this summer and earned a well-deserved jump in...

Walter Izquierdo Jr. (2031, Miami, Fla.) showed off the upside on the mound for Beast Baseball 13u. The right-handed pitcher went four innings and collected three strikeouts while spreading two hits and two walks for one run. The fastball topped out at 80 and was consistently in the upper- 70s. Showed feel for a curveball with 12-6 shape and some looser vertical depth that was able to get weak contact. Competes in the zone well and showed some feel to work on the arm-side half of the plate. Intriguing upside on the young arm.   Brett Hamlin (2031, Jupiter, Fla.) showed off the barrel feel for FTB American 13u. The left-handed hitter collected nine hits, including two doubles and a triple, to drive in seven RBI. Strong hands and flips the hips well to create good bat speed.
