Synopsis:
As scary as it may sound for Vanderbilt’s opposition, their College World Series title run may have only been the first stage of what looks like a potentially blossoming dynasty under Head Coach Tim Corbin. Very few teams could lose a pitcher of the caliber of Tyler Beede, 2014 starting shortstop Vince Conde as well as Omaha hero, John Norwood, and still enter the 2015 season looking like an even stronger team than they were before.

Vandy has an embarrassment of riches in their weekend rotation, led by near-lock first round draft choices, Walker Buehler and Carson Fulmer. Tyler Ferguson, owner of a 97 mph fastball, appears primed to slide into the role of Sunday starter, but there also may be room for changes there as the season unfolds. Vanderbilt’s endless pitching depth could allow them to use polished lefty John Kilichowski, who is coming off a fantastic summer pitching in the NECBL, in that role at some point as well. Ferguson's electric right arm allows the Vanderbilt coaching staff some flexibility on that front if a bullpen need arises. On top of that, the Commodores have electric arms like Jordan Sheffield and Ben Bowden, who could ascend to larger roles at any point throughout the spring if needed.

Although pitching will continue to be the story, it’s important not to look past the Vanderbilt lineup. Dansby Swanson will slide over to shortstop and will likely be a strong contender for SEC Player of the Year. Sophomore outfielder Bryan Reynolds also emerged as a star in 2015, and there are many scouts who believe Rhett Wiseman could be on the verge of fully tapping into his vast offensive potential. As if the defending National Champions needed any more help, they also boast an immensely talented freshman class, led by projected starting third baseman, Will Toffey, who is already viewed as an immediate impact player in the Commodores' lineup.

From the rotation, to the lineup, to the end of the game – where the Commodores will close with one of the most dominant relievers in the country in breaking ball artist Hayden Stone – you’d be hard pressed to find even the slightest hole on this roster.

2. Virginia
Brandon WaddellVirginia Athletics

Head coach:
Brian O'Connor
Conference: Atlantic Coast
2014 record: 53-16 (22-8 ACC)
2014 finish: Runner-up at College World Series

Top returning hitters:
2B John La Prise (.348-1-17), OF Joe McCarthy (.301-6-49), C Robbie Coman (.283-1-15), 3B Kenny Towns (.278-2-36), C/1B Matt Thaiss (.265-0-7), SS Daniel Pinero (.261-0-22)

RHP Alec Bettinger (6-0, 1.23 ERA, 36.2 IP, 32:15), LHP Nathan Kirby (9-3, 2.06 ERA, 113.1 IP, 112:33), LHP Brandon Waddell (10-3, 2.45 ERA, 114 IP, 73:19), RHP Josh Sborz (6-4, 2.92 ERA, 77 IP, 72:44), RHP Connor Jones (4-1, 3.13 ERA, 54.2 IP, 40:23)

Top newcomers:
3B Charlie Cody, OF Pavin Smith, OF Adam Haseley, 2B Jack Gerstenmaier, RHP Derek Casey, RHP Tommy Doyle, LHP Bennett Sousa

Top 2015 prospects:
LHP Nathan Kirby (14), OF Joe McCarthy (47), RHP Josh Sborz (94), LHP Brandon Waddell (217)

Synopsis:

After reaching the College World Series finals last year, Coach Brian O’Connor and his staff return their entire starting rotation, though a piece or two has been shuffled around. With closer Nick Howard being selected in the first round last June, Saturday starter Josh Sborz will fill in the spot vacated by Howard, a true testament to the quality and depth the Cavaliers have on the mound. Why move Sborz to the bullpen? Connor Jones and company is the answer. A heralded prospect out of high school, Jones shows advanced stuff including a fastball that will work in the mid-90s and is complemented by big-time breaking stuff.

The staff will be anchored by returning ace and reigning ACC Pitcher of the Year, Nathan Kirby, a premier name for the 2015 MLB Draft who sported a 2.06 ERA while going 9-3 in 2014, including a no-hit, 18 strikeout performance in early April. Also returning to the rotation is fellow lefthander Brandon Waddell who put up equally impressive numbers going 10-3 while featuring some of the best pitchability in the country. Alec Bettinger, a righthander who split time between starting and relieving last spring, will look to post equally impressive numbers, providing the Cavaliers with a solid mid-week starter. Freshman Tommy Doyle opened eyes this fall, showing a big fastball and is yet another quality option for Virginia.

While the pitching staff didn’t take much of a hit, the offense did, losing their top two hitters in Mike Papi and Brandon Cogswell, as well as Derek Fisher and his powerful lefthanded swing. Back however is junior outfielder Joe McCarthy, a Perfect Game Preseason Second Team All-American, who hit .301 last spring while putting six balls out of the yard and driving in 49 runs. The Cavaliers also have a strong double play combo up the middle with John La Prise and Daniel Pinero. Pinero shows advanced tools across the board with a plus arm while La Prise hit .348 last spring while swiping five bags in six attempts.

Another freshman to keep an eye on is outfielder/lefthanded pitcher Adam Haseley who shows a smooth stroke from the left side and should provide valuable innings on the mound while working into the low-90s with his fastball. Nearly half of the roster is composed of freshman, but with several keys pieces returning and a freshman class that could make an impact immediately, look for Virginia to go on another run this spring.

3. Texas Christian

Head coach:
Jim Schlossnagle
Conference: Big 12
2014 record: 48-18 (17-7 Big 12)
2014 finish: College World Series

Top returning hitters:
2B Garrett Crain (.324-1-19), SS Keaton Jones (.266-0-21), 3B Derek Odell (.265-1-35), OF Cody Jones (.265-0-18), 1B Jeremie Fagnan (.203-2-11)

Top returning pitchers:
RHP Riley Ferrell (3-1, 0.79 ERA, 15 saves, 45.1 IP, 70:14), RHP Preston Morrison (9-4, 1.32 ERA, 129.2 IP, 95:21), RHP Trey Teakell (6-1, 2.34 ERA, 61.2 IP, 41:13), LHP Tyler Alexander (10-3, 2.36 ERA, 99 IP, 59:11), LHP Alex Young (1-3, 2.51 ERA, 43 IP, 40:16)

Top newcomers:
C Evan Skoug, OF Nolan Brown (transfer), SS Elliott Barzilli (transfer), OF Dane Steinhagen (transfer), OF Connor Wanhannen, C Zach Plunkett

Top 2015 prospects:
RHP Riley Ferrell (21), LHP Alex Young (31), RHP Mitchell Traver (196), LHP Tyler Alexander (205)

Synopsis: Even with the departure of CWS and MLB World Series standout Brandon Finnegan, TCU has incredible pitching depth, and are the one team in the nation that could match up with Vanderbilt and Virginia arm-for-arm. Senior ace and the reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Year Preston Morrison is back to lead the staff, and while he may not throw hard, he regularly carves up opposing hitters with impeccable command and one of college baseball's best changeups.

Ten-game winner and lefthander Tyler Alexander returns to assume the Saturday spot, while fellow lefty Alex Young, who has the greatest pro potential of the weekend starting trio, is expected to take the Sunday role. Righthander Trey Teakell, who went 6-1 with a 2.34 ERA a year ago, mostly out of the bullpen, is slated to open the year as TCU's mid-week starter.

All of these names come before we even get to their closer, fireballer Riley Ferrell, who alone will make close games that much more difficult to overcome for their opponents. Mitchell Traver, Brian Howard and Ryan Burnett could very well be weekend starters on almost any other program, thus giving TCU one of, if not the deepest bullpen in the nation.

The offense has some significant question marks, losing five of their top six regular hitters from 2014. Freshman catcher Evan Skoug could provide some instant thunder to the middle of the lineup as only one returning regular from last year had a slugging percentage above .400;
Garrett Crain, who led the team in hitting with a .324 average. Transfers Elliott Barzill, Nolan Brown and Dane Steinhagen should help fill some key roles while bridging the gap between their upperclassmen and a talented incoming freshman class.
