WWBA Southeast Qualifier Preview

EMERSON, Ga. – Perfect Game baseball returns to LakePoint this weekend in the form of a three-day tournament which will begin on Friday, September 12thh and conclude on Sunday, September 14thh.

Forty-four teams will compete in this weekend’s WWBA Southeast Qualifier #1 tournament for an automatic paid invitation to the WWBA World Championship, the most scouted amateur baseball tournament in the world, held October 23rdd through the 27thh in Jupiter, Fla. This tournament marks the first ever WWBA World Championship qualifying tournament hosted at Perfect Game Park South at LakePoint. The East Cobb Complex, Kell High School, Pop High School, and Sprayberry High School will also host tournament games.

There will be a ton of talent gathering at the quad at LakePoint this weekend -- 39 players in Perfect Game’s Top 250, to be exact. A couple of organizations bring powerful rosters with them this weekend, with multiple Division-I commits and highly ranked players.

East Cobb Baseball’s roster stands out at first glance, with nine players ranked in the Top 250 of their respective class, and seven of them committed to D-I programs, including six SEC. Shortstop Jalen Miller (2015 No. 41, Clemson) highlights the roster, followed by 1B Thomas Johns (2016 No. 102, Auburn), OF Reggie Pruitt (2015 No. 110, Vanderbilt), RHP Brock Love (2015 No. 118, Alabama), C Cody Roberts (2015 No. 148, uncommitted), LHP Nick Bush (2015 No. 177, LSU), SS Matthew Cole (2016 No. 204, uncommitted), RHP Zac Kristofak (2016 No. 233, Georgia), and C Chase Smartt (2015 No. 250, Troy).

That’s not the only dangerous East Cobb club playing in this weekend’s tournament. The East Cobb Yankees bring with them five players in the Top 250, highlighted by RHP Jonathan Hughes (2015 No. 85, Georgia Tech). Right-handed pitcher Shane Tucker (2015 No. 131, Georgia), C Kyle McCann (2016 No. 138, uncommitted), SS Carter Hall (2015 No. 182, Georgia Tech), and C Tyler Stephenson (2015 No. 220, Georgia Tech) are all highly ranked guys worth keeping a close eye on.

Don’t forget about the East Cobb Astros 16u team, however. They’ve been able to go deep into the playoffs throughout the summer, whether against older competition or not. First baseman Will Benson (2016 No. 42, uncommitted) headlines the roster, along with C Daniel Seres (2016 No. 164, uncommitted), SS Xzavion Curry (2016 No. 218, uncommitted), and 2B/OF James Kirklin III (2016 No. 232, uncommitted).

Team Elite brings a couple of high-powered rosters to LakePoint this weekend. Team Elite 18’s Prime boasts seven players in the Top 250, while Team Elite 17’s Prime carries five Top 250 players.

Team Elite 18’s Prime is paced by 2014 Perfect Game All-American outfielder Jahmai Jones (2015 No. 7, North Carolina), along with LHP Jonathan Gettys (2016 No. 20, uncommitted), RHP Nick Neidert (2015 No. 59, South Carolina), 3B Bryce Denton (2015 No. 77, Vanderbilt), C Michael Curry (2015 No. 135, Georgia), SS Aaron Schunk (2016 No. 171, uncommitted), and SS David Chabut (2015 No. 246, Kennesaw State).

The 17’s team looks to be very competitive this weekend as well. Highlighted by shortstop Cam Shepherd (2016 No. 51, uncommitted), the roster includes twins Austin Wilhite (2016 No. 129, Georgia Tech) and Nick Wilhite (2016 No. 130, Georgia Tech), as well as 1B Cole Zabowski (2016 No. 230, Mississippi) and OF Garrett Hodges (2016 No. 231, Kennesaw State).

The Homeplate Chilidogs Maldonado, who had good runs all summer at LakePoint tournaments, including a couple of championships, will bring a pair of 2014 Perfect Game All-Americans in shortstop Cornelius Randolph (2015 No. 15, Clemson) and right-handed pitcher Tristin English (2015 No. 40, Georgia Tech), as well as talented outfielder Bryant Harris (2015 No. 107, Tennessee).

Other players highlighting this weekend’s action include RHP Alex Speas (2016 No. 38, uncommitted) of the Atlanta Blue Jays, OF Chad Smith (2015 No. 74, Georgia) of Marquis Grissom Baseball, C Caleb Raleigh (2015 No. 130, Clemson) of Mountain Expos Black, 1B Curtis Terry (2015 No. 204, Georgia State) of Tiger USA, LHP Erikson Lanning (2015 No. 228, uncommitted) of the Georgia Jackets 17u, and SS Blake Reese (2015 No. 241, Florida) of MBA Pride Elite.

With so many talented players expected to play in this weekend’s qualifier, the prized automatic bid to Jupiter’s WWBA World Championship is up for grabs and should make for an exciting tournament.

13u World Series Notes: Days 1-2

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Michael Wedgeworth (2030, Flomaton, AL) had put the two way ability on full display so far this week, dominating from both sides. On the mound Wedgeworth ran the fastball up to 84 (81-83) with ease to the delivery. Broke off a couple nasty curveballs that induced swing and miss, as well as freezing hitters for punch outs. Collected six in his four inning complete game. He also would not be denied at the plate going 3-5 in the first two days with two doubles. Very intriguing young player as the body continues to grow.  Tyler Bellush (2031, Summerville, SC) is a sure handed shortstop for the Canes Nation squad. Swings it from the left side of the plate and the barrel accuracy has really stuck out thus far. 3-4 through the first couple days with a double and two triples, Bellush has also walked twice and collected 3 RBI along the way. Yesterday against USA Prime with the bases loaded,...

He finished the weekend with 9 hits, including two doubles and a home run, while driving in seven runs and scoring five more. Mixing a slurvy breaker & turning the CHG over well. @PG_Uncommitted #NatElite @Texas_PG pic.twitter.com/oz2XXoKHvt — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) June 30, 2026 Aj Bonnette (2028, Keller, Texas) showed out on both sides of the ball at the National Elite Championship, but really stood out on the mound Tuesday. He toed the rubber in round two of the playoffs, proceeding to toss six innings with eight punchouts and zero earned runs allowed. The 6-foot southpaw filled up all four quadrants of the strike zone, attacking hitters early and often with his fastball. The heater lived in the 88-91 mph range with heavy traits, often setting up his slurvy breaking ball. Bonnette showed good feel...

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

"Wow" Swings Catch Eyes at 16u Elite

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

Article Image
Following a jam-packed week of entertainment at the 17u WWBA Championships, the top nationally ranked program, USA Prime 17u National/Detroit Tigers Scout Team, faced off against Stacked Baseball 17u (No. 80 nationally) in the highly anticipated championship matchup as both teams looked to earn one of the most prestigious titles in all of travel baseball. Each talented squad entered the finale undefeated, but Stacked Baseball continued their dominance throughout the tournament, defeating the Detroit Tigers Scout Team 10-2 in mercy rule fashion to become national champions behind explosive bats and impressive pitching. Stacked Baseball was the overwhelming top team throughout the week as the WWBA Champions outscored opponents by an absurd 117-12 during their 11-0 run. “We got some talented kids, but we played against a little bit of Goliath over there,” Stacked Head Coach Mike...
