15U BCS National Championship Preview

Riley Sheppard      Hannah Jo Groves
Over 100 teams hope to get their rings sized at the conclusion of this year's 15U BCS National Championship.

The 102 ball clubs traveling to Southwest Florida will be split into 17 six-team pools where they will play five games a piece. From there, each pool winner along the next 15 best records will advance to a 32 team single elimination tournament.

One of those teams searching for a shot at the title is CBU 2026 Scout Team - James with top-200 players Mills Carrillo, AJ Cruz, Brandon Lorenzo and Colin Ulrich

Carrillo, a University of Texas pledge, enters the tournament as the highest ranked player nationally among the field (No. 35) and it’s easy to see why. A dynamic two-way threat, Carrillo has struck out 50 in his 44 ⅓ innings on the mound in 2022, while also batting .394 and driving in 28 runs behind the plate.

Another team looking to make some noise following back-to-back strong outings at the PG 15U World Series and WWBA National Championship is Smartense 15U The Show. With a trio of top-150 players in Matthew Kerrigan, Hudson Reed and Branson Crawford, there’s no denying the talent on this roster.

Kerrigan, an Auburn University commit, enters the tournament batting .350 through 19 games in 2023 with eight RBIs and four doubles. While Reed, the No. 1 ranked third baseman in Georgia, is off to a blustering start on the mound and behind the plate this year. A University of Georgia commit, Reed has already registered 13 strikeouts in 6 ⅔ innings while batting .447 with a .527 on base percentage in 19 games. Along with Crawford, who already has six extra base hits - including a home run - and 19 RBIs in 21 appearances.

Also bolstering an elite collection of talent will be TBT AS4, entering the week with Jake Rizzo, Bryan Borges and Dylan Dubovik - each top-275 players in their respective classes.

Rizzo, one of the top three catchers in Florida, is lethal force on the bases - already up to nine stolen bases in 2023. And behind the plate, the Parkland, Florida native is posting a .509 on base percentage through 20 games with four doubles, three triples and 16 runs. Borges, also one of the best catchers in the state, currently boasts a .432 batting average through 25 games, along with six doubles, 15 runs and 18 RBIs. Dubovik, currently sits at a .417 batting average through 19 games in 2023. A University of Miami commit, the Miami, Florida, native has also tacked on eight doubles, 15 runs and 10 stolen bases.

A team with a pretty substantial record is the Charlotte Baseball Academy 15U National, standing at 34-12-2. With an honorable mention nationally, the team is ranked at No. 11 in the coastal region and includes two top-500 players in States Farr and Bo Lowrance and right-handed pitcher John Ingle

Farr, a University of South Carolina commit, is batting .302 on the year, along with 17 singles, two doubles and 11 RBIs. As South Carolina’s No. 1 shortstop, Farr will be sure to impress on the defensive side of the ball as well. Lowrance, a future Duke Blue Devil, has contributed 17 RBIs, 13 singles and four doubles in 25 games - getting his batting average up to .315. On the mound, he's struck out 21 in 19 innings. Another way Lowrance benefits his team on defense is on third base, as one of the top-two third baseman in South Carolina. Ingle, heralding from Concord, North Carolina is up to 34 strikeouts in 20 innings while keeping his ERA at 1.40 in 2023.

As one of the winningest teams coming into the tournament, Blue Sox Baseball stands at 25-2 on the year ranking No. 28 in the southeast and with a national honorable mention honor. With offensive strength from Jarrett Scott and pitching power from Asher Goodwin, Jackson Black and Carter Hinsley - the Blue Sox are sure to make a splash in Fort Myers.

Hailing from Adairsville, Georgia, Scott has a strong .537 batting average as he's hit 15 singles, two doubles, one triple and 18 RBIs. At first base, he’s ranked No. 13 in Georgia - so his skills will be put to the test as he will strive to keep his team’s auspicious record. Goodwin, a 6-6 and 195lb right-handed pitcher Goodwin from Ringgold, Georgia, has struck out 15 in 11 innings while also not allowing a single run in that span. From Tunnel Hill, Georgia, right-hander Black has racked up 16 Ks in 16 innings and managed to keep his ERA at .40 in 2023. Hinsley, the No. 81 left-handed pitcher making the trip from Ooltewah, Tennessee, has pitched 18 innings while striking out an astounding 37 hitters.

The six day tournament kicks off on Thursday, with nearly half the field slotted for 8:00 a.m. start times.
