Pitching Highlights from Saturday
5/23/2015
Due to weather induced schedule changes, the three games Saturday were all indoor simulated games. With the chance of playing outdoors on Sunday, most pitchers who threw were secondary pitchers.
One primary pitcher who did throw and was very impressive, earning a National Showcase invite, was Nathan Sweeney (2016 RHP, Centennial, CO). The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Sweeney was 90-92 mph from a fast paced athletic delivery during his first inning of work and lived at the bottom of the strike zone with impressive life. His curveball is still developing but flashed good spin a couple of times.
Secondary pitchers who stood out included:
Issac Bracken (2016 SS/RHP, Berthoud, CO) has always shown big arm strength from both the infield and outfield but has really improved on the mound over the last year. He topped out at 89 mph early and showed a very nice sweeping 74 mph slider that had hard spin and bite. Bracken has a chance to be a primary pitcher in the future with more delivery refinement and consistency.
Drake Davis (2017 OF/RHP, Highlands Ranch, CO) has a fast paced delivery with lots of moving parts but his athleticism holds in together and he threw plenty of quality strikes. He worked consistently at 83-85 mph with his fastball and got big tailing life at times.
Any pitcher named Hammer should be a good one and Kalen Hammer (2017 SS, Windsor, CO) showed well on the mound despite his 5-foot-8 height. Hammer worked in the 80-83 mph range and his best pitch was a deep breaking 73 mph slider.
Garrett Kocis (2017 SS, Omaha, NE) has a great pitcher's frame at 6-foot-3, 190-pounds with long, loose arms. He has an easy arm action and delivery and plenty of projection. He topped out at 85 mph and threw both a change up and curveball.
