Julian Velez is a 2019 SS/3B with a 6-1 179 lb. frame from Añasco, PR who attends Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy. Large, athletic frame with broad shoulders and a high waist, present strength to frame throughout with additional rom to fill out. Ran a 6.92 60-yard dash. Primary shortstop, fields the ball out front and shows athleticism to actions, hands work nicely at the ball, has a bounce to step and moves well, gets to an over-the-top release point and gets on top of throws, arm plays well on the left side with carry. Righthanded hitter, begins with a wide base and a high hand set and back elbow at the plate; limited shift through lower half but utilizes a leg lift trigger for timing. Gets the barrel through the zone well and keeps hand inside throughout path, shows comfort working the middle and pull side parts of the field. Projects with incorporation of lower half into weight transfer, able to generate backspin when squared up and can work all fields with carry. Very good student.
