2007 West Coast Top Prospect Showcase
Derek Ring is a 2008 MIF with a 5'10'', 165 lb. frame from Thousand Oaks, CA who attends Westlake HS. He has an average frame and lean build. If Ring were a bit bigger and stronger all his skills would stand out more. He is a solid player with good baseball skills but sometimes can get overlooked in comparison to top players in his age group. He is competitive and has a sound hitting approach. Ring has a quick bat and a simple swing, consistently making solid barrel contact. He is the type of hitter a coach can use to manufacture runs because of his ability to execute. Defensively Ring played really well. He has good hands and showed some athleticism, especially on the plays when he charged the ball and threw accurately off the wrong foot and on the move. Ring read hops and closed on the ball really well. His all-around game is quite solid and he is a good athlete.
