2004 National Underclass Dec 28-30
Hanlon is a 6-1 junior left hander from Maryland with wide hips and thighs. He threw 4 effective innings, showing above average command and mound presence. Hanlon throws from a high ¾’s release point and maintains very good downhill plane to his pitches. His fastball was 80-82 mph and he showed the ability to throw strikes to both sides of the plate. Hanlon’s curveball had good downward tilt and good spin at 61-63 mph. If he threw this pitch harder it could become a very nice weapon for him. Hanlon didn’t throw a change up, which was unexpected for a polished pitcher. Hanlon threw well, but there is more in his arm if he can develop more strength and firm up his body. Hanlon also showed some ability with the bat. He has a loft type approach at the plate and uses his present strength well. He had a couple of game hits and showed gap type power with wood. Hanlon is also a very good student.
