Baseball Instructor Bios:

Tim Evans: Baseball and Softball Hitting Instructor - Former player for the Houston Astros, Evans played for the organization in 1995, coming up through the minor leagues with the Jackson Generals, Tucson Toros and Osceola Astros. He also played for the Quad City River Bandits in 1993, earning a Midwest League All-Star berth. After ending his playing career, he worked the last 23 years as a part time scout for the Cleveland Indians and the Houston Astros.  He began his college coaching career as an assistant at Kirkwood from 1996 to 2000. He also served as pitching coach for the Waterloo Bucks in 1997 and 1998.  Evans spent time as an assistant coach at Iowa State from 2000 to 2001, helping the Cyclones to a Big 12 tournament appearance before the University dropped their baseball program. He then accepted a position at the University of Iowa from 2001 to 2003. During his tenure at Iowa, the Hawkeyes made their first Big Ten Tournament appearance in 13 seasons. Tim is a Prairie High School Graduate and currently resides in Cedar Rapids.

 

Brian Dinkelman: Hitting Instructor - Brian is currently the Head Coach for the Cedar Rapids Kernels. He is a native of Centralia, Illinois and went to school at Centralia High School and McKendree University before being drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 8th round of the 2006 MLB Draft. Brian enjoyed 6 seasons within the Twins minor league system before being called to the major league Twins in 2011. In 2013 Brian ended his playing career. Brian brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to Perfect Game and has worked with many hitters who are playing at baseball's highest level. He currently resides in Cedar Rapids with his wife Randi and daughter Sydney.

 

Kevin Schuver: Hitting and Catching Instructor- Kevin was a two time first team all-state catcher at Marion High School as well as a 3 time all-conference and all-district performer. Kevin posted a .527 batting average that is tied for the highest in school history for a single season. Kevin went on to play college baseball at Kirkwood Community College and Coe College. While at Coe, Kevin was a two time all-conference player as well as an all-region player his senior year. Kevin coached 8 seasons as an assistant baseball coach at Marion High School as well as 2 seasons as an assistant at Coe College. Kevin currently serves as the National Scouting and Showcase Coordinator for Perfect Game. Kevin resides with his wife Katelynn, daughter Paisley and son Gavin in Cedar Rapids.

 



Chris Brown: Pitching Instructor -  Chris attended high school and Junior College in Texas before being drafted by the Houston Astros in 2001. Chris enjoyed 2 seasons with the Astros organization before being injured during the 2003 season. Over the next nine years Chris then performed several MLB team camps and clinics. Chris brings a plethora of arm strength and agility drills to Perfect Game along with his extensive experience working with all levels of players.

 


Steve James: Pitching Instructor - Steve is a graduate of Cedar Rapids Washington High school and was a starting pitcher for the Warriors on their 1999 and 2000 teams that finished 3rd in class 4A. He was named Honorable Mention All-State, All-Conference, All-District, and All-Metro teams his senior year. Steve pitched collegiately at Kirkwood Community College and Coe College. Steve has 10 years of experience at Perfect Game as a pitching instructor, scout, and coaches PG Iowa Select Teams. Since 2005, Steve has coached over 100 Division 1 players and more than 30 draft picks including 2nd rounders’ Mitch Keller, Alec Rash, and Kellen Sweeney as well as 1st Rounders' AJ Puk and Jon Gilmore.

Phil Richmond: Pitching, Hitting and Catching Instructor - Phil graduated from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, earning all-district honors as a catcher. After a freshman season at Kirkwood Community College, Phil began pitching and later graduated from Judson University. In 2012, Phil led the Midwest Collegiate League in votes for the league’s all-star game before continuing his summer for the Rochester Honkers in the Northwoods League. After his senior season of college, he began playing independent league baseball, starting in the Pecos League in 2013. In 2017, he tied the league lead in the Empire League in wins and led in saves with an all-star game selection.


Stephen Murphy: Hitting and Catching Instructor - Stephen attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha as a catcher. In his junior and senior year of college, he played behind the plate of TD Ameritrade Stadium, the host of the College World Series, while representing UNO. Before his college career, he made the Tri-county All-Star team representing my district(Omaha, Nebraska) all four years of high school, and played club baseball with UBA(Ultimate Baseball Academy) when he wasn't playing league. Stephen currently resides in North Liberty and is continuing his education to pursue law. His love for the sport has grown over the years and he enjoys giving back to the community through baseball.


Jessy Gutwiler: Hitting Instructor - Jessy has been giving lessons at Perfect Game for nearly 5 years and currently coaches the Perfect Game 14u team. He also serves as the director for the League of Dreams program, giving underprivileged kids a chance to play baseball. In his playing career, Jessy was a 4-year letter winner at North Cedar High School, playing shortstop. Jessy brings a wealth of hitting and fielding knowledge to Perfect Game and works well with players of all ages and skill levels. Jessy currently resides in Cedar Rapids.

Todd Oberthien: Pitching and Hitting Instructor - Todd graduated from Mount Mercy University in 2018. Was a pitcher at Mount Mercy and received all conference honorable mention in 2018 and recorded 9 saves on the season. Played at Solon High School and was a part of two state championship teams. Was an all conference utility player and all district pitcher. Currently plays in summer semi pro leagues in Iowa. Very knowledgeable on pitching mechanics, velocity development, developing different pitches, and arm care. Also knowledgeable about different hitting styles and mechanics, such as hand path and launch angle. Has High School coaching experience and has worked with all age levels in the past. Passionate about the sport and very communicative, positive, and friendly.

John Thomas: Hitting/Throwing Instructor - John is originally from Dixon, IL. John graduated from Mount Mercy University in 2018. He was an outfielder and a first baseman. He received an All-Conference award in 2018 for hitting .309 with 7 HR, 37 RBI, and slugging .559. John has posted exit speeds up to 108 mph and is very knowledgeable on developing baseball-specific power. He trained at Fastball USA in Schaumburg, IL for much of his high school and college career. He is known for his positive energy that he brings each day and is extremely passionate about the game. John is always hungry to learn. He plays semi-pro ball during the summer for the Fairfax Stars. He is currently getting his Masters of Business Administration at Mount Mercy while working as a graduate assistant in the athletic department.


Softball Instructor Bios:

Tianna Drahn: Softball Slap Hitting Instructor - Tianna graduated from Cedar Rapids Kennedy in 2016 where she was a multi-sport athlete. She was a four year varsity softball starter. Drahn was a three-time 1st team All-Conference selection, three-time 1st team All-East District selection, and a two-time 1st team All-State selection. She holds the record for stolen bases (60) and batting average (0.566) at Kennedy High School. Tianna now plays at the University of Northern Iowa and is entering her Junior season. She played in 37 games her freshman year in center field and played in 40 games her sophomore year in right field. In the Summer, Tianna serves as the Assistant Varsity coach at Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

 

Mallory Neubauer: Softball Hitting Instructor - I graduated from Clear Creek Amana where I was a four-year letter winner and part of 4 state appearances; one of those appearances was a State Championship. I was coached by the best softball coach in the state, Jim White. After high school, I attended Kirkwood Community College where I was coached by Joe Yegge. In both of my years at Kirkwood we were conference champs, district champs, and we played in the NJCAA National Tournament. After Kirkwood, I played for Coach Lou Yacinich at Grand View University where we were conference champs and played in the NAIA National Tournament both of my years there. I would consider myself a utility player because I have played just about every position on the field. I have previous experience giving hitting lessons and two summers worth of umpiring under my belt. Now that I’m retired, I am excited to share my softball knowledge with young softball players who want to be the best!

Baylee Bechen: Softball Slap Hitting/Outfield Instructor – Baylee graduated from Woodbury Central High School in Moville, Iowa where she was a five-year varsity starter as short-stop and third base with multiple honorable mention awards, winning 4 Western Valley Conference Championships and one state appearance placing 3rd in 2014. Bechen went on to play at Iowa Lakes Community College as a utility/outfield player her freshman and sophomore years with a batting avg. of (0.412) and slugging avg. of (.496) as a freshman. Overall, at ILCC Bechen played in 86 games with 96 hits, 9 doubles, 2 triples and 2 homeruns and an honorable mention award. In the summers she was an assistant coach at Westwood High School with Dan Thompson back in western Iowa. She continued to play on at Mount Mercy University with Coach Larry Yoder and is very excited to be in the Cedar Rapids area sharing her knowledge and work ethic with young softball women.

Rental

 Cage rentals for individuals are prohibited. Cages are available on a first come first serve basis to members ONLY. We do not reserve cages. Cages are only held for pre-approved PG affiliated lessons. Attempting to hold a cage or reserve a cage on your own is strictly prohibited and can result in a forfeiture of membership.

Individual Lessons Policy

Effective as of MARCH 1, 2017

Any and all coaches, trainers or non-custodial adults must be pre-approved to give private lessons at the Perfect Game Indoor Hitting Facility.


Each person is required to comply with these guidelines:

1.  A background check must be submitted to our Risk Manager.  If you do not have one you must go to this link https://opportunities.averity.com/PerfectGameInc  
 
2. Complete the requested information and pay the $25 cost for the check.  All information is secured and private and will not be shared outside of the Risk Manager.  Adverse reports will be reviewed with the adult prior to action being taken.  All decisions made by the Risk Manager will be final.
 
3. At NO TIME will an adult be allowed to accompany a non-custodial minor into a restroom.
 
4. At NO TIME will an adult be allowed to be alone with a non-custodial minor in any room or semi-private or private location within our facility.
 
5. Perfect Game Inc. affords NO liability insurance or accident medical insurance to coaches, trainers,teams or team managers who use our facility.   
 
6. All facility usage fees must be scheduled and paid for in advance
