Scouting the Spring Swing at LakePoint

Harris shines, 3/6 notes >>

3/6/2015 3:34:19 PM
Missouri State Junior RHP Jon Harris is a treat to watch pitch. He was 90-93 mph with his fastball and mixed in a nice breaking ball and change up, as he struck out 13 Wright State batters while allowing only 2 runs on 4 hits, walking 2. Harris showed why he is #71 on our preseason MLB Draft list and has been fun to watch his progress from the 2010 pitcher/catcher indoor showcases when he showed loads of potential with a mid 80's fastball and was given a PG grade of 9.  http://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=268226

Missouri State OF Tate Matheny checks in at 157 on our pre season MLB Draft List and showed off his short quick stroke with very good batspeed.

There was around 100 or so scouts to check out the action at PG Park yesterday and there was plenty of reasons.

Possibly the biggest draw was Cincinnati's Ian Happ and he did not disappoint. He can flat out rake and has had quality at bats all weekend when not intentionally walked and absolutely hammered an opposite field HR. It is a treat to get to watch him hit and through 9 games he is now hitting .559 with 4 doubles and 3 HR.

Iowa's Junior RHP Blake Hickman got the start for the Hawkeyes and showed electric stuff. The former catcher was 92-96 mph. He was around the plate all day with all of his pitches and kept hitters off balance mixing in his off speed offerings as he went 6 IP allowing 2 hits, 1 run and struck out 9. He had the large gathering of scouts buzzing.

Scouts also had plenty to choose from in the high school action today as top prospects from many area high schools were in PG Park playing including, DJ Neal, Bakari Gayle, Teykwaan Whyte, Chris Cullen, Carter Kieboom, Jason Rooks all ranked in the top 250 in their respective classes and many more ranked players. Piedmont gets up early; finishes 8-2 >>

2/12/2015 7:42:40 AM
On a beautiful Wednesday here in Emerson, GA the Georgia Highlands Chargers took on crosstown foe, the Piedmont Lions. The Chargers had a few costly fielding miscues early allowing the Lions to jump out in front, and they never recovered.

He pitched in the 89-91 with his fastball which registered 1700-1900 spin rates courtesy of TrackMan. Pitchers with lower spin rates tend to generate a higher percentage of ground balls; if they can keep the ball down in the zone. The Lions used their entire lineup to get things done at the plate. Every player in the starting line up either scored, got a hit or drove in a run. It was quite the team effort.
