Matt Wivinis was sharp today and pitched a good game as Downers Grove South (IL) handed 8th ranked Bishop Gorman (NV) its first loss of the season. Wivinis thew a complete game, striking out 7 without issuing a walk, scattering 6 hits to improve the Mustangs to 2-0 in pool play at the Big League Dugout National Invitational.

Erik VanMeetren was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Wivinis, a Kansas State commit has shown rapid development over the past couple of years, making the jump from 83 MPH with his fastball in the fall of 2009 up to 89 last fall. He impressed PG scouts at the 2010 WWBA World Championship in Jupiter with the movement on his fastball and his low effort delivery.
Downers Grove will wrap up pool play against Hamilton (AZ) tomorrow at 3:45 and can clinch a spot in the semi-finals with a win.
