Alabama: Oxford Tournament Preview

Some of the top teams in Alabama will travel to the Oxford/Jacksonville area this weekend for a tournament sure to draw a number of scouts and also sort out the some questions about who the best teams and major contenders for the state title are.

10 games will take place Friday across 6 high school fields as well as Jacksonville State University. Saturday is the big day with 20 games being played including a number of huge matchups.

15 players playing in the tournament are ranked in the top 500 of their respective classes and six of the teams (Russell County, Oxford, Auburn,Cullman, and Spain Park) are some of the top teams in the state and look to contend for state titles.

Friday Preview

-Oxford starts off its tournament with a home doubleheadervs. Hewitt and Oak Mountain. Joe McGuire will start the first game with FrazierTaylor slated to throw the second.

-Oxford may have the most talented junior class in the statebehind RHP/1B Tucker Simpson, who will start Saturday, and OF Matthew Goodson and 3B Jackson Stephens, who were featured in last week’s Who’s Hot.

-Simpson’s younger brother Trent, a sophomore is also a top prospect.

-Oak Mountain features RHP Jake Hubbard, an Alabama commit, who PG has seen up to 90 with his fastball, and junior RHP/OF David Dahl, who has committed to Auburn, and has been up to 91 on mound.

-Oak Mountain will take on Pell City at 4 pm in another top matchup. Pell City is led by LHP Locke St. John, who will make the start against Oak Moutain, and OF Cole Billingsley, who is ranked #257 in the 2012 class.

-Boaz led by Alabama commit Kyle Overstreet takes on Hewitt Friday at 7 pm at Jacksonville State Univeristy.

-The state’s top LHP will be in attendance this weekend as Jonathan Keller, an Alabama commit, and Thompson HS play a 4 pm game vs. Russell County and a 7 pm game vs. Southside on Friday, and a doubleheader Saturday afternoon/night.

-Russell County has a deep and talented squad led by OF Tyler Andujar, MIF Brent Wuestney, and OF Marks Abernathy. After their opener vs. Thompson, they also play a 7 pm game atEtowah.
