2013 National HS Preseason Top 50

As part of Perfect Game's preseason High School Baseball coverage, the top 10 teams in the nation will be profiled leading up to the release of the top 50 teams in the nation.  Once the national rankings are released, Perfect Game will provide previews of each of the 10 regions across the nation.  Please visit the High School page for all of Perfect Game's high school baseball based content.

Team Nos. 6-10
Team No. 5 - Elk Grove Thundering Herd (Elk Grove, Calif.)
Team No. 4 - Tampa Jesuit Tigers (Tampa, Fla.)
Team No. 3 - Mater Dei Monarchs (Santa Ana, Calif.)
Team No. 2 - Cathedral Catholic Dons (San Diego, Calif.)

Team No. 1- American Heritage Patriots (Plantation, Fla.)

The 2013 preseason top 50 rankings feature a bit less firepower at the top than the 2012 edition. However, the depth at the bottom was actually stronger, with several very good teams missing the cut.

There was some debate about the top spot, as Cathedral Catholic's five man pitching rotation is the clear cut best staff in the nation, at least on paper. However, defending 5A champions and 2012 PG National Champion American Heritage gets the nod for the top spot thanks to their balance of a solid pitching staff, a potent lineup and plenty of returning experience.

As per usual, the top 10 is dominated by teams from the hotbed states of Florida, California and Georgia. However, in a surprising development, not a single team hailing from the Lone Star State makes an appearance, with No. 13 Dulles holding the title of top ranked team from Texas. It appears to be wide open year in Texas, with several strong teams, but none being an overwhelming favorite on paper, though the depth is apparent as eight squads represent the state in the preseason top 50.

Gardena Serra (CA) just missed giving California a fifth team in the top 10, landing at No. 11 thanks to several key transfers. Serra is led by 2013 1B/LHP Dominic Smith, one of the premier players in the nation, and picked up three key players from the 2014 class to bolster their lineup and add much needed pitching depth.

Nevada's lone representative No. 31 Bishop Gorman finds itself ranked much lower than they have been in past seasons. The Gaels ran their streak of state championships to a nation's best eight  last year, but were hit hard by graduation, as last year's captain Joey Gallo is now in the Texas Rangers organization. They're still the favorite in Nevada and still boast a lot of talent, but they will have some big shoes to fill.

The state of Colorado looks to be unusually strong this year, with a pair of teams placing in the top 50 in the nation, led by No. 16 Cherry Creek. Creek is joined by No. 29 Regis Jesuit, who they knocked off in the 5A state semifinals on their way to claming the 2012 state crown. Regis was the 2011 5A state champion, and under the tutelage of newly hired Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss, reached the state semifinals during a rebuilding year in 2012.

2013 preseason top 50 teams coming off of 2012 championships:

No. 1 American Heritage (FL), No. 2 Cathedral Catholic (CA), No. 6 Venice (FL), No. 8 Parkview (GA), No. 9 Loganville (GA), No. 12 Spruce Creek (FL), No. 16 Cherry Creek (CO), No. 20 Campolindo (CA), No. 25 Rancho Bernardo (CA), No. 26 Archbishop McCarthy (FL), No. 31 Bishop Gorman (NV), No. 32 Barbe (LA), No. 33 Kentwood (WA), No. 35 Moeller (OH), No. 39 Cypress Ranch (TX) and No. 42 Gloucester Catholic (NJ).

Lennex Minor (‘28 CA) absolutely destroys this offering to the PS for a 2-run shot. 2-4 on the day w/ 4 driven in. Athletic in the box w/ a quick stroke and strength throughout the frame. Welcome to another Perfect Game Mock Draft. This is not your typical mock draft as it features 15 different GMs drafting the first two rounds of the draft. Each member of the mock draft was assigned two teams and as such will be drafting all of the picks in the first two rounds for each responsible team. The actual draft order will be presented below and we will dive into how teams made their selections and how they feel about the players drafted. It is important to note that this is not how we think the draft will play out in almost any capacity. This is simply an exercise 4 months ahead of time with a large portion of the scouting staff and some picks fall under personal favorites, best available, and a multitude of other factors. Chicago White Sox 1:1 Roch Cholowsky, SS, UCLA | 1:41 Jack Radel, RHP, Notre Dame The White Sox don’t overthink here and select Roch Cholowsky, who has...

DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 1

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
Welcome to another week of Perfect Game Small School baseball — and if you're looking for clarity at the top, you've come to the wrong place. Across all three classifications, the No. 1 spot is very much an open question, and nobody is sleeping comfortably right now. In NCAA Division II, Pittsburg State is stumbling at precisely the wrong moment, leaving the door cracked wide open for hungry challengers to come knocking. In the NAIA, defending national champion LSU Shreveport has dropped four straight and suddenly looks far more vulnerable than a program of their pedigree ever expects to be. And in NCAA Division III, the race for the top ranking is less a competition and more a ten-car pileup of elite programs, none of whom have done enough to pull away — and all of whom have done plenty to deserve it. Three classifications, three vacancies at the top, and a whole lot of...

Roman Keister (2030, Dade City, FL) Could not miss the barrel this weekend tallying 6 hits including 2 triples and 4 RBI. Starts the load early and controls his body well, the up the middle approach really plays in game. Also worked from off the mound for an inning and picked up a punch out.  Colton Russo (2030, Coral Springs, FL) Showed off the power burning outfielders all weekend. 5 hits including two triples that carried over the CF and RF heads. Has a good understanding about using the lower half in the swing and the bat to ball skills really impressed.  Karson Blakney (2030, St. Augustine, FL) Made his impact in a big way this week, collecting the win in the quarterfinals. In his outing he went 5 shutout innings and struck out 5 while only allowing 2 hits. Worked in the mid 70s with the FB and topped out at 78. Also produced on offense driving in 5 RBI on 4 hits. ...
