Ohio Valley High School Notebook

Max Phillips, 2027, LHP/OF, Trinity (KY) checks in as the number one player in the Kentucky class in the most recent update. It’s easy to see why as he has arguably the highest ceiling in the class, both on the mound and as a bat. In my look, a few backs, Phillips got the start on the mound during his team’s last regular season game. The Wake Forest commit in four innings, saw his FB up to 91 a handful of times, while living 87-89 for the majority. The changeup sat in the low 80s while he also spun a sweeper that was up to 2400 rpm at 76-79. Phillips possesses a long athletic frame, coming at 6-foot-4 and 190 lbs. Strength will continue to be added as he progresses throughout the year. On the mound, it’s a longer action from a mid 3/4 slot. Tends to work more glove side with some arm side run. There’s velocity there that is still untapped as he continues to figure out the operation. At the plate, it’s smooth swing that typically hits out of the leadoff spot for a loaded Trinity team. Starts in a wide & athletic base with a small toe tap and the bat path is short to contact with a long-extended finish. Has the ability to work all fields and the power projects. There is efficient bat speed along the way from a leveraged path. Expect Phillips to have a big summer and fall. 


Jack Ryan, 2026, RHP/1B, St. Xavier (OH) A personal favorite of mine is the Boston College commit. Ryan has been on the circuit for quite some time now, dating back to 2021 as he is a two-time PG Select Fest alum (13u & 14u). As playoffs get underway, I was able to see his last start of the regular season, and it went as good as you would think. Ryan held a no-hitter until the seventh but was broken up on a softly hit single. Once that happened, his day was done. He threw  6 1/3 innings, while only allowing one hit, two walks and tallying 12 strikeouts. His off-speed was absolutely dialed, with his slider still being a plus pitch in the 79-82 mph range. The changeup worked off the slider in the low 80s and has also added a curveball to his repertoire that was in the mid 70s. The pitch ability is a premium trait with the ability to throw any pitch in any count and at any time. Ryan has solidified himself as one of the more consistent performers both on the mound and with the bat. A day after this start, he was named the GCL (conference) Player of the Year for the second straight year. With playoffs just getting started, his legendary four-year campaign also includes over 100 hits and 200 strikeouts, cementing himself in school history. Despite the profile, his leadership really makes this team go, and the sky is the limit for Ryan as he and his team look to make a deep run.  




Keegan Sawyer, 2028, C,  Badin (OH) Sawyer checks in as a top player in the 2028 class in Ohio. And the numbers back up the top 230 nationally ranking. The frame stands in at 6-foot, 190-pounds and has actions on both sides of the ball. There is present strength to the build with more being added over the next few years. At the plate, he works with a gap-to-gap approach and impacts baseballs at a high rate. The offensive side is what certainly stands out as he is sitting at a healthy .425 average and a .527 OBP. Sawyer has tallied 32 hits in 27 games. About half of those hits have gone for extra bases, including three home runs, nine doubles, and three triples. On defense, he does a great job controlling the run game and has solidified himself as one of the top catchers in the country. As much as the defense intrigues, the bat is really the calling card as it’s a constant producer. This is a name to pop over the summer ahead of August 1.  


Tyler Fryman, 2027, CF, Beechwood (KY) I have seen a lot of baseball this spring and have covered a lot of the ground throughout the Ohio Valley region and there are a handful of names that have really impressed. Tyler Fryman is one of those names.  It’s a hyper athletic profile that is a game changer on both sides of the ball. Whether it’s on the defensive side, covering massive ground in centerfield or at the leadoff spot setting the tone for his team. Rinse and repeat. Fryman leads Kentucky in hits and finds himself near the top in almost every offensive category. The Louisville commit will have an important senior year coming up, where he also shines on the gridiron as a four-star recruit. The offers for both baseball and football continue to pour in and it’s a top profile in the region and considered a national talent in both sports. One of my favorite watches all spring and he is part of a loaded team that is setting their sights on a state championship run.  


Kyle Flynn, 2026, RHP, Dixie Heights (KY) made only his third appearance this spring in the opening round of the region playoffs. And boy, did he deliver. Coming off an injury plagues senior year, the Thomas More commit got the ball in the most important game to date. He proceeded to go six scoreless innings only allowing three hits, three walks, and striking out eight.  Not be out done by his own self, Flynn also delivered the game winning hit in the bottom of the seventh to advance his team to the next round of playoffs. Pitching on adrenaline, Flynn was going to have the ball in this one no matter what. And he delivered. On the mound, he works from a mid-three-quarters slot from a rocker delivery, with quick arm speed and feel for spin. His fastball peaked at 88 mph and lived around 85-87 for the duration. His off-speed really prolonged his outing as his slider and curveball worked in the mid 70s and missed bats. High-energy profile that competes on the mound. 
 

Kai Anderson, 2027, C, Highlands (KY) Anderson is an uncommitted backstop out of the northern Kentucky area. He packs a powerful punch on both sides and the energy is contagious. Manning the backstop, he shows the defensive & intrinsic nature to play this game at a high level and his suitor after high school will have a winner and a surefire competitor. The defensive actions and the ability to produce at the plate with exceptional bat-to-ball make him one of the top uncommitted players in the Kentucky ’27 class. Anderson displays an explosive lower half with a short and compact swing and has a knack for finding a barrel. He plays above his size at 5-foot-8, 160 pounds. And he he will continue to win at the next level.  


Brady Bushman, 2026, CF/RHP, Conner (KY) The Wallace-Dothan commit has a very interesting profile as a two-way. During the 2025 summer, he was low-mid 80s at a few events of ours. After the calendar turned, a noticeable jump was made ahead of the spring. He has had a few crosscheckers out and he’s now topping out in the low 90s. Bushman’s athleticism truly stands out as he has posted a sub 6.9 60-yard dash. The left-handed hit tool and a right-handed pitcher on the mound, is super intriguing. At the plate, he starts in an open stance, almost facing the pitcher head on. Displays a tight turn with a backside load and can create good barrel leverage through an uphill swing on an even plane. It’s a taller yet lean build at 6-foot-2, 175 pounds. Bushman proceeded to go 4-for-5 with four runs scored, adding a triple and three singles out of the leadoff spot in my one look. On the mound, it’s mostly 87-90 mph with some fastballs at 91 and 92 mph. The secondary pitches include an 11-5 slider in the high 70s and a breaking ball in the low 70s.

Quintin Blackwell (2030, Hercules, California) has, literally, been unstoppable this weekend for Premier Banditos Deleon. In six plate appearances, he has a walk and five hits. Doing it all with a double and two triples, while stealing three bags. Plenty of coil on the front side. Hands work through zone and the barrel stays on plane for a long time. High upside bat that makes an already deep Banditos lineup even deeper. Kenson Buth (2027, Trophy Club, Texas) has been an absolute weapon on both ends for Stix 2027 Scout. At the plate, he’s 6-9 with two doubles, a triple, and a home run. Linear approach with a ton of bat speed. Plenty of impact at the bottom of the zone and showing some ability to do serious damage in the middle of the field. On the mound, he went four quality innings, punching out three. The fastball lived 86-90 with carry. Good feel for the slider in the mid 70s....

This weekend, eight teams will head to Goodyear Ballpark for the 2026 PG Arizona All-State tournament, setting the stage for what should be an exciting few days of baseball. 13u & 14u PG Elite Scout Notes: Days 1-2 Tucker Richardson (2030, Mobile, Ala.) has already made a name for himself and he continued to play at the expected high level during his time in Hoover, finishing the tournament with a robust .700 average, collecting at least one base hit in each of his team’s games. One of the summer’s premier events returns to the Hoover area this week as the 2026 Perfect Game East WWBA Championship gets underway. Now in its seventh year, the event has become a staple on the summer travel baseball calendar, bringing together some of the top organizations and prospects from across the country. A total of 132 teams will compete across three age divisions, including 38 teams in the 15U division, 48 teams in the 16U division, and 46 teams in the 17U division. Adan Rojas (2027, Streamwood, Ill.) turned in one of the more dominant pitching performances of the weekend, striking out 10 over 5 innings while consistently dictating at-bats. The fastball worked 77–80 mph, topping at 82, and he showed the ability to elevate and miss bats when needed. His slider at 67–70 mph played as a real separator pitch, generating uncomfortable swings and late decisions. Showed strong tempo on the mound and never allowed hitters to settle in rhythm. The Florida World Series returns to Fort Myers this weekend, bringing together teams from across the state for one of Florida’s premier summer events. The four-day tournament will feature competition in the 14U through 18U age divisions as teams battle for a World Series championship.
