Regional Review: Texas

Photo: Jordan Lawlar (Perfect Game)
With the Perfect Game scouting staff spread throughout the country and another action-packed season in the books, we'll take a look back at some highlights from individual states over the next couple of weeks, from the 13u level all the way up through the collegiate ranks and the MLB Draft.

Biggest 13u Moment/Breakout Player
Texas is well represented in the 2026 class with an exciting up-and-coming pool of talent. Among notable performances in the 2021 circuit, the biggest moments of the year came from the state’s top two ranks. Grady Emerson and CJ Sampson were exceptional at 13u National and 13u Select Festival. Sampson was named 13u Pitcher of the Year while Emerson, the No. 4 overall 2026 prospect, helped lead a dominant championship run at the 14u Worlds with his talent at the plate. Plenty still to come from this class, but the most intriguing breakout player was Miles Young, a physical 6-foot-2, 175-pound shortstop who seamlessly impacted games on both sides with a deep tool set on display at the South Elite Championships in the 16u group no less.

Biggest 14u Moment/Breakout Player
The 2025s in Texas competed very well on some of the biggest 14u stages of 2021. A lot of anticipation lies ahead of these prospects' prep careers after finishing the season with several enticing early verbal commitments to the country’s top programs. There were a handful of notable big moments, but few compared to Vanderbilt commit Minjae Seo tossing a hitless eight-punchout outing at the Freshman Worlds and holding his own in a short appearance in the Upperclass World Championship, striking out two more in the same week. From the start of the spring, Jack McKernan was the clear biggest breakout player, who took leaps in the rankings with dominant performances and power stuff from the left side with more to come, the recent Texas commit really molded his craft on the mound posting strong starts week to week.

Biggest College Moments
Texas had an exciting 2021 campaign, making another College World Series appearance. Though the Longhorns fell one game short of the CWS Championship to the eventual national champions, their 50-17 season highlighted having no holes in their loaded lineup with some of college baseball’s top prospects leading the way and young talent making early impact. Dallas Baptist was also a fun watch in 2021, seeking their first CWS appearance and putting together a Top 25 stature to their 41-18 season that ended after winning the series opener against Virginia in the Super Regional.

Biggest Summer Moment
The 2021 Texas summer circuit provided some fun to watch next-level baseball. Standing out immediately is the power arm from 2023’s No. 10 prospect and 2023 draft eligible prospect, Travis Sykora. The 6-foot-5 athletic and physical presence on the mound still does not prepare you for 97 mph fastballs with life downhill, and not often are rising juniors prepared to make the adjustment at the plate against it. His first start of the summer at the South Invitational was a short two-inning stint with six strikeouts and not much hope to find the barrel against him.

Biggest Breakout Player
Jett Williams was a very fun to watch two-way talent all summer who made leaps in his big summer. He plays with excellent feel for the middle infield and a plus run tool he transfers to the field effectively. He put his five-tool potential on full display week-in and week-out, consistently productive with impact in every phase of the game. Williams is an athletic, compact 5-foot-8 frame with explosive tools and advanced strength heading in the right direction, bringing some excitement to the 2022 Mississippi State recruiting class.

Biggest Draft Moment
In the 2021 MLB Draft, Colton Cowser and Jordan Lawlar exemplified Texas amateur talent at the highest level with back-to-back early first round selections. The Baltimore Orioles put their trust in Southland’s Player of the Year, Cowser, with the No. 5 overall pick out of Sam Houston providing one of the most polished bats making it easy to jump his rank after an incredible college career, piecing together quite the track record alongside a pure hit tool we should see in the Big Leagues soon. Vanderbilt recruit and five-tool shortstop Lawler was the top prep position player in the draft selected at No. 6 overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks out of Jesuit in Dallas.

A Look Ahead

High School: The 2022 Texas high school season is getting ready for another spring of some of the nation’s best teams and players across the state. Picking up where the 2021 season left off with Rockwall-Heath, Friendswood and Lake Travis as the top-three in Texas, I look forward to Lake Travis’s season and another year with an exciting pitching rotation, including the power arm duo from two-way player and Texas signee Pierce George and Texas A&M signee Luke Jackson bringing a difficult pair of low-90s arms both with feel to spin, alongside Rhode Island signee Cole Carroll and 2023 Alabama commit Jackson Baker to go to.

College: Texas is bringing back important players to the 2022 season with some exciting transfers and freshman talent in the mix. This program has looked spring ready since the start of fall, especially their unfair pitching depth, including 2023 draft eligible RHP Tanner Witt generating buzz and looking sharp on the mound in the fall, and there will be plenty of big moments to watch for from him. And after a dominant 2021 season, the experience returns with quality depth shaped for another highly-anticipated CWS run from the Longhorns.

When the summer season arrives, every team is searching for momentum. For ZT National Prospects, that momentum has come from throughout the lineup. After clinching their spot in bracket play with back-to-back victories, including a 16-0 win over Team Elite Scout 14U Black and an 8-0 victory against Hawaii Elite 2G 14U Black, ZT National Prospects have continued to showcase why they entered the week as one of the premier teams in the tournament. The roster is loaded with talent, including six players ranked among the top 50 players nationally in the 2030 class, but the team’s success has come from much more than individual achievements. In the opening bracket game on Tuesday, nine different players drove in runs as ZT National rolled to a 16-run victory. The balanced offensive attack continued in the playoff game, with six different players recording RBIs in an 8-0 win that helped...

The spring has come to a close and with the summer in full swing, it’s time to crown a National Champion for the High School season. The Trinity Shamrocks out of Louisville, Kentucky had an incredible year and finished the season winning back-to-back state titles, more impressively finishing on a 24 game winning streak. The spring was filled with dominant performances from the Shamrocks, led by PG All-American Grayson Willoughby who turned in a dominant effort in the state title game, a game in which they won 12-0. They played a rigorous schedule that saw them go 2-2 at NHSI including a win over St. John Bosco (CA) as well as a win over Tampa Jesuit (FL), both of which would go on to win state titles in powerhouse baseball states. The accolades don’t stop there as they posted six no-hitters across the spring as well as 21 shutout victories, making this one of the more...

‘27 TWP Koa Romero (LA) pumping fuel early in the outing & already has 4 K’s thru 2 IP. Up to 95, mostly 91-93 & comes out easy. Spins it with conviction at 80 (~2800 RPM) & also showing mid-80s CH. Highest level two way talent. #LSU commit #WWBA @PG_DeepSouth pic.twitter.com/QenpvDvFTT — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) June 23, 2026 Koa Romero (2027, Des Allemands, La.) has just been flat out dominant on the offensive side throughout the summer circuit thus far, already collecting five homers through 12 games. However, on Tuesday he had the two-way ability on full display in a dominant four inning start for the East Coast Sox 2027 Franchise. The 5-foot-10, 225-pound two-way player ran the fastball up to 95 mph and it comes out of the hand easy. He pairs that with a nasty curveball at 80-81 (2800+ RPM) and mixes in a firm changeup to left-handed hitters....

2026 MLB Draft Reports: 400-500 300. Anthony Quigley, SS/3B, Northwest Florida State R-R, 6-5/215, Coral Springs, FL Previously Drafted: Never Drafted Anthony Quigley possesses a strong, physical frame with athleticism that plays in the box. There is bat speed through the zone with a feel to launch. The power stands out to the pullside. Quigley shows the athleticism on the defensive side, but is still likely best suited for third base at the next level.  301. Garrett Lambert, RHP, Mercer R-R, 6-2/200, Lilburn, GA Previously Drafted: Never Drafted Garrett Lambert features a strong, athletic frame with a quality three-pitch mix. The fastball works in the low-90’s with carry and cut. It is paired with a sharp slider that has sweep and diving changeup. Following a riveting weekend of baseball with over 40 teams represented in the 16u field of the Southeast Select Championship, two nationally ranked squads met in the championship as ATL Lightning 16u Gold put on a dominating performance to take home their first trophy of the summer and complete the tournament undefeated, overcoming eXposure 16u National 11-5. “Lot of compete,” ATL Lightning coach Jamie Palmer said on the successful weekend. “We got some guys that work really hard, get tired. I mean, these tournaments are so short, eight games in four days, they're tired, but they just kept competing and finding a way to get runs across and make plays when they needed to. In the first inning, Cannon Mayes got the starting nod for eXposure and held ATL Lightning to a scoreless frame with a tailor-made 6-4-3 double play ball to send it to the home half of the opening...

Mason Bicht (‘29 PA) stays hot, nukes this ball to dead CF for a Grand Slam💣 clear juice being put on display today #WWBANEChamp@PG_Scouting https://t.co/l24AwJ8RnB pic.twitter.com/iYgNvJcD2M — Perfect Game Mid-Atlantic (@PGMidAtlantic) June 13, 2026 Mason Bicht (2029 Lansdale, PA) was an absolute force offensively over the course of the WWBA Northeast Championship, ultimately ending his event with a well deserved most valuable player award. Finishing with a .571 BA including five doubles, a HR, and 14 RBI, the 6-foot-1, 210 pound prospect simply refused to get out, and was a major reason why his Philly Bandits squad walked away champs Monday afternoon. The stance for Bicht is relaxed and balanced with loose hands and plenty of bat speed to be found. He generates effortless carry to the pull side & middle of the field, flashing clear jump off the barrel with leverage created...

VSA, Swamp Crowned Co-Champs

Alyssa Golden

VSA, Swamp Crowned Co-Champs After Nine-Inning Battle After three and a half hours under the hot Florida sun, VSA Sluggers 18 and Swamp Baseball’s City of Palms Championship battle ended in fitting fashion, with both teams sharing the title. The two teams remained tied 9-9 through nine innings before lightning in the area brought the championship matchup to a halt Monday afternoon. The two local programs have built a competitive rivalry, with several close matchups stemming from their proximity and familiarity with each other. Their history was evident throughout Monday’s matchup as emotions ran high, resulting in several heated exchanges and the eventual ejection of Swamp head coach Brian Porvaznik. Just three weeks earlier, the two teams met in the championship game of the BCS Qualifier, where VSA earned a 6-4 victory. Swamp entered Monday’s matchup looking to flip...
