2021 Preseason College Top 25

Photo: Jud Fabian (Mario Houben)
College baseball is on the precipice of being officially back and yesterday we released the Preseason All-Americans along with today’s Preseason Top 25. Perfect Game will be your one-stop shop for all things college baseball in the coming weeks, as we’ll have previews for each conference of Division I baseball along with previews and breakdowns for Division II, Division III, NAIA, and JUCO.

As with any year, the quest for selecting the No. 1 team in the country was not an easy one and featured a lot of debate amongst the merits of the teams. Ultimately, we went with Florida who ended last season as our No. 1 team following a 16-1 start, a sweep of a top-10 ranked Miami, and the breakout of star center fielder Jud Fabian. Florida featured three players on the Preseason All-American team, which includes the aforementioned Fabian on the first team, Tommy Mace on the second team, and Hunter Barco on the third team. We’ll have a full report and feature article from Jeff Dahn on the No. 1 Gators later this week.

The rest of the top-10 features a lot of the usual suspects as Louisville, Texas Tech, and UCLA were ranked No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4, respectively, when the season ended and retain those rankings now. Louisville might have the deepest group of returning hitters in the country while Texas Tech would rival them in that department. The Bruins return their entire weekend rotation and will be led by a college superstar in shortstop Matt McLain.

Ole Miss and Vanderbilt come in at Nos. 5 and 6 and both teams feature deadly starting pitching combinations in the Rebels’ Doug Nikhazy and Gunnar Hoglund along with the Commodores’ Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter. Miami is ranked No. 7 and will have to replace two of their weekend starters but have the incoming talent to reconcile that, while No. 8 LSU might have one of their best freshman classes in recent memory. Virginia has the pitching depth to compete with anyone at No. 9, and at No. 10 is the first mid-major in UC Santa Barbara as their starting rotation might stand atop the country when the dust settles on the 2021 season.

We’ll have a ton of content coming out regarding the upcoming season starting next week with full breakdowns of the Top 25 along with breakdowns of teams that just missed the cut in the 26-40 range. The rankings will be updated once the season starts on a weekly basis on Mondays following the action of weekend series. Make sure to follow on Twitter for all things college baseball and Perfect Game.

Flores posted a 2.78 ERA over 32.1 innings as a freshman before a limited sophomore campaign in which he logged just 12 innings. The stuff was on full display this summer, highlighted by a dominant five-inning, nine-strikeout playoff performance in which he touched 98 mph five different times. His fastball averaged nearly 96 mph throughout his time on the Cape, pairing the...

Pokers Rally to Capture 16U BCS Title A hot afternoon at JetBlue Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida ended in a 9-1 victory for the Original Florida Pokers 2028 National, defeating SBA Bolts Florida 2028 National on Monday to capture the 16U BCS National Championship. A pitchers’ duel kept the game scoreless through four innings before the Pokers broke it open with a five-run fifth inning. The title marked the Pokers’ second 16U BCS Championship, adding to the championship they won in 2022. Despite a slow start to the summer, the Pokers found their stride at the right time. “We struggled a lot early in the summer, but the past few tournaments we really started turning it on,” Pokers head coach Will McCrimon said. “I’m just so proud of these kids.” Max Maynes started the game on the mound for the Pokers. The left-hander allowed three hits and two walks...

Realistic Expectations of a 1:1 Pick

Tyler Henninger

Over the 2026 draft cycle, UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky was the projected No. 1 pick throughout the entire cycle. White Sox fans began #RochWatch and were already talking about when he will make it to Chicago. Now that he has been selected, Cholowsky has immediately become a Top-10 prospect in all of baseball. There is no denying the hype, and the pressure, for Chowlosky to get to the big leagues and produce at a high level.  But how realistic is that? Let’s take a look back at past 1:1 selections and see what you can expect from a No. 1 overall selection.  For this exercise, we’ll look at No. 1 overall picks from the bonus pool era, excluding Eli Willits from 2025 since this is his first full year of pro ball. That gives us 13 players selected from 2012 through 2024.  Almost All Become Big Leaguers The first thing that stands out is how successful No. 1 picks...

Following a dominant week at the 17u PG East World Series, No. 34 ranked 643 DP Cougars 17u capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating No. 2 ranked East Cobb Astros 17u, 3-2, in the championship game to claim the title. The Cougars earned the tournament's No. 1 overall seed after outscoring opponents by an absurd 59-6 throughout the week before completing their championship run with a hard-fought victory in the finale. “Always feels great to finish the year playing your best ball, especially when going up against strong competition,” 643 Head Coach Danny Pralgo said. “We did so many of the little things right: on the mound with location, clean on defense, bunting, 2 strike approach leading to long at bats, getting hit-by-pitches, and we had so many good outs offensively that led to moving a runner or scoring a runner. And when those things all come together in...

Hortenbury was probably one of my personal favorites, as this was my first time seeing it in action. It’s an athletic two-way profile that has a chance to do both at the next level. But what stood out to me, was his potential on the mound. The left-handed pitcher moves very well and is comfortable there. Has the mound presence Supplemented with a free-flowing and loose arm from a higher ¾ slot, he pounded the zone in his lone appearance. He went...
