2019 WWBA 15u Prospect Meadows National Championship: Day 1-2 Scout Notes

Sajan Chesson (2022, Robinsdale, Minn.) Was dominant in his 5 1/3 innings of work for MN-Millers Scout. Chesson only allowed one hit during his outing while striking out three. Chesson showed a fastball with good control to both sides of the plate complemented by a sharp curveball thrown for consistently for a strike in two strike counts creating a lot of soft ground ball contact at 70 mph.

Jake Kohanzo (2022, Barrington Ill.) has a funky delivery creating a lot of deception to the plate with good arm speed. He showed an easy arm featuring a fastball up to 80 mph and an 11-to-5 breaking ball at 66 mph. He threw both pitches for strikes consistently in all counts creating a lot of soft contact, workeing six innings allowing only three hits while collecting six strikeouts. Kohanzo also made some noise at the plate with a loud triple to right field showing his pull-side power.

Colton Sims (2022, Russelville, Ark.) Enjoyed two appearances on the mound this weekend combining for 3 2/3 innings, walking just one during that time. The 75th-ranked player in the nation features an athletic delivery with good arm speed and repeatable mechanics. He showed the ability to throw consistent strikes with both pitches including a fastball up to 85 mph with heavy life through the zone and a sharp curveball with 11-to-5 shape, creating a lot of swings-and-misses and called strikes.

Derrick Smith (2022, White Bear Lake, Minn.) collected eight hits on the weekend in 19 at-bats posting a .421 batting average. Seven of those hits were singles with a smooth, repeatable swing and good barrel control creating consistent line drives. Smith showed the ability to drive the ball with authority driving a deep home run. In the field Smith displayed easy, smooth actions working to and through the baseball with confident glove actions and good arm strength across the infield.

Cal Kilgore (2021, Overland Park, Kan.) posted a .333 batting average on the weekend while collecting six RBI. Kilgore features a smooth, athletic swing with a slightly lifted path and good barrel speed. He showed the ability multiple times over the weekend to drive the ball with authority to and through the gaps in the outfield collecting three loud triples.

Kyle Schupmann (2022, Geneva, Ill.) was making loud contact throughout the weekend posting a .444 batting average, collecting eight hits while also driving in eight runs and scoring eight runs. Schupmann showed a high intent swing with a slightly lifted path and good barrel control creating consistently driven contact to and through the gaps. Kyle showed his ability to drive the ball over the weekend collecting six extra-base hits including three doubles, one triple and two home runs to the pull side.

Zach Schneider (2022 Pevely, Mo.) was effective on the mound for the Recruits Baseball Club, firing seven shutout innings. Schneider consistently filled the zone with strikes with easy, repeatable mechanics. He topped out at 81 mph.

Brandon Bak (2022 Plainfield, Ill.) pitched Elite Baseball Training - Wilson to a win over the top-seeded Arkansas Sticks, striking out eight batters and only allowing one run. From an over-the-top arm slot, the tall lefty has an explosive delivery and tunneled his pitches well with great deception. He consistently threw his curveball for strikes and threw an impressive changeup that got plenty of swings and misses.

The Cangelosi Sparks White 15u team advanced through the playoffs off the back of an excellent performance from lefty Justin Sewers (2022, Orlando, Ill.). The crafty southpaw went 6 1/3 innings not allowing a single hit with the only blemish on his line being a couple of walks surrendered in the fourth inning. Sewers has a fluid delivery with easy repeatable mechanics, while generating solid arm speed for his age into an over-the-top arm slot. He creates slight downhill angle on his fastball that was sitting in the low- to mid-70s and topping out at 76 mph.His stuff isn’t going to wow you on the velocity side currently, but what he lacks in that area he easily makes up for with his pinpoint accuracy. Sewers worked the edge of the plate with consistency and would occasionally mix in a looping 1-to-7 curveball to keep the pitch in the mind of the opposing batters. He would end the game with 10 strikeouts on his way to a 6-0 victory.

On the final day of the event nobody had a better day than righthanded hitter Ethan Loss (2022, Lake Elmo, Minn.). The slender two-hole hitter for the MN Icemen 15U Sutterer team was on fire in both the semifinals as well as the championship game going a combined 6-for-8, driving in a total of five runs, scoring four himself, and adding several stolen bases as well. His stroke is very direct and compact to the baseball working from very little to no load pre-pitch. He’s a contact-oriented hitter that shows better than average barrel skills for his age.

He capped off his MVP performance with a walkoff home run to take home the championship. Thompson is one of the premier players in the 2029 class. We are in the early stages of the 2027 cycle and there is still plenty of time for players to make significant jumps up the board. While our current Top-100 provides an early look at the class, several players just outside that group have the upside to make a run at becoming Top-50 pick by next July. The landscape of the MLB Draft continues to evolve each and every year. What teams value at the top of the draft can change based on the strength of a particular class, shifts in player development philosophy, and, perhaps most importantly, the way organizations evaluate risk and upside. Some trends are subtle, while others become impossible to ignore when viewed across multiple years. For this study, I set out to answer one question: What player profiles do teams value at the top of the draft? To answer it, I analyzed the Top-100 picks from each of the last six drafts (2021-2026). That gives us 600 total selections to examine and provides a large enough sample to identify both the profiles that have remained consistently popular and those that have gained or lost significant ground. Harry Chubb Jones Jr. is getting an early start on the next chapter of his baseball career. 2027 Top 100 Draft Board  Current Favorite: SS Dylan Seward, Norco HS (Calif.) In our first iteration of the 2027 Draft Board, Norco shortstop Dylan Seward ranks No. 1 overall. The switch-hitter is an ultra-twitchy player with a lot to like on both sides of the ball. He is a supreme athlete that should stick up the middle. Explosiveness is shown in all aspects of his game and gives the profiles big time upside.  In the event that Seward does not go 1:1, each member of our draft team selected a player that they think could wind up in that spot.
