Week 5 Spring League Recap

Photo: Jalen Martinez (Perfect Game)
Easter weekend was the final weekend for the Iowa Spring League as the weather finally turned in a good way. This weekend again brought many great performances, especially on the mound. We had some performers run away with their honors this week as they really stood out with their performances. Top hitters and pitchers from each grad year are listed below as well as those considered for the honor.

Top 2019 Performers

Pitcher of the Week:
Harrison Cook (2019, Prairie HS) threw two innings to wrap up the spring league featuring a fastball up to 90 miles per hour and a sharp curve ball at 77 miles per hour. The University of Kentucky commit fanned all six of the batters he faced during his outing on Saturday.

Also Considered: Blake Grevengoed (2019, West Des Moines Valley HS) makes his second appearance in the Top Performers list after pitching three solid innings for Iowa Sticks Pearson. The righty was up to 85 with his fastball while striking out five batters and only allowing a single hit. Grevengoed is committed to DMACC.

Nick Gottilla (2019, Davenport Assumption HS) pitched two scoreless innings on Friday night, running his fastball up to 88 miles per hour and striking out three. The projectable lefty gave up a single hit in the outing and walked three. Gottilla had a good spring on the mound, striking out 11 over five innings while surrendering just a single hit. Gottilla is committed to UCF.

Batter of the Week:
Ethan Herber (2019, Dubuque Senior HS) had a huge weekend at the plate for DRBA Senior Rams Feeder, collecting four hits including a triple and two loud home runs all while driving in six runs on the day. Herber is uncommitted.

Also Considered:
Will Kranz (2019, Davenport Central HS) continued to put on a show offensively on the Spring, collecting four hits, including a triple. Kranz also showed off his speed, swiping eight bags. Kranz has done it all offensively this Spring. He is uncommitted.

Zack Beekmann (2019, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) collected three hits in the double header last weekend including a triple. Beekmann drove in six runs while scoring one himself on the weekend as well. Beekman is uncommitted.

Top 2020 Performers

Pitcher of the Week: Alec Nigut (2020, Des Moines Roosevelt HS) had another great weekend on the mound, this time striking out eight over three innings for Iowa Select Pearson. The lefty was up to 83 with his fastball and did not surrender a single hit. Nigut is committed to the University of Iowa.

Also Considered:
Kennan Winn (2020 Pekin Community HS) collected five strikeouts in two innings pitched while running his fastball up to 84 miles per hour while allowing 0 walks or hits. Kennan is uncommitted.

Reece Beuter (2020, Dike-New Hartford) was lights out on the mound for EMB 1 throwing four innings while collecting six strike outs. Reece was able to run his fastball up to 86 miles per hour during his outing on Saturday. Beuter is uncommitted.

Batter of the Week:

Top 2021 Performers

Pitcher of the Week: Logan Runde (2021, Dubuque Hempstead HS) is another two way talent that has really impressed this Spring, being one of the top hitters and pitchers in the class. Runde was pitcher of the week last week and defended his honor, striking out seven batters in three innings of work. Runde finished the Spring League with  24 strikeouts and allowed only a single hit in nine and 2/3 innings.  Runde is uncommitted.

Colin Streff (2021, Linn Mar HS) had another great weekend on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings. Also Considered:
Brady Kauzlarich (2021, Centerville HS) could have easily won both pitcher of the week or batter of the week, however he was slightly snuffed out of both honors b the winners. Kauzlarich was probably the most well rounded player of the weekend in the 2021 class, collecting four singles, scoring five runs and stealing five bags at the plate. He also pitched four innings of one hit baseball, striking out six and working his fastball to 83 mph. Kauzlarich is uncommitted.

Welcome to another Perfect Game Mock Draft. This is not your typical mock draft as it features 15 different GMs drafting the first two rounds of the draft. Each member of the mock draft was assigned two teams and as such will be drafting all of the picks in the first two rounds for each responsible team. The actual draft order will be presented below and we will dive into how teams made their selections and how they feel about the players drafted. It is important to note that this is not how we think the draft will play out in almost any capacity. This is simply an exercise 4 months ahead of time with a large portion of the scouting staff and some picks fall under personal favorites, best available, and a multitude of other factors. Chicago White Sox 1:1 Roch Cholowsky, SS, UCLA | 1:41 Jack Radel, RHP, Notre Dame The White Sox don’t overthink here and select Roch Cholowsky, who has...

Lennex Minor (‘28 CA) absolutely destroys this offering to the PS for a 2-run shot. 2-4 on the day w/ 4 driven in. Athletic in the box w/ a quick stroke and strength throughout the frame. DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 1

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
Welcome to another week of Perfect Game Small School baseball — and if you're looking for clarity at the top, you've come to the wrong place. Across all three classifications, the No. 1 spot is very much an open question, and nobody is sleeping comfortably right now. In NCAA Division II, Pittsburg State is stumbling at precisely the wrong moment, leaving the door cracked wide open for hungry challengers to come knocking. In the NAIA, defending national champion LSU Shreveport has dropped four straight and suddenly looks far more vulnerable than a program of their pedigree ever expects to be. And in NCAA Division III, the race for the top ranking is less a competition and more a ten-car pileup of elite programs, none of whom have done enough to pull away — and all of whom have done plenty to deserve it. Three classifications, three vacancies at the top, and a whole lot of...
