Western Nevada vs. Southern Nevada at the Region 18 Tournament

Steve Fiorindo was on hand in Henderson, Nev., to watch Western Nevada take on Southern Nevada at the Junior College level as part of the Region 18 Tournament. Western Nevada won all three of their games, including two against CSN, to advance to the Western District Tournament.

Mikey York, a lean and athletic 6-foot-2, 190-pound righthander, is making a positive impression on scouts this spring while pitching for the College of Southern Nevada. He has plenty of projectability to add strength to his frame and shows a balanced delivery in which he incorporates his lower half well. York works on the first base side of the rubber with a direct stride toward home plate while getting very good extension on his pitches.

The fastball jumps out of York’s hand with late arm-side run, especially on the arm-side half of the plate. He pounds his fastball in the lower parts of the strike zone effectively, and forced opposing batters to adjust to those pitches. York didn’t give in to the count or situation, walking both the first batter of the game and the first batter he faced in the fourth inning on four pitches as he continued to establish his fastball. That pitch sat at 90-93 mph, touching 94, with occasional cut on the glove-side half of the plate. He would elevate his fastball with enough gas to get a swing and miss when the count was in his favor.

York also threw a 72-75 mph downer curveball and mixed in a few low-80s changeups. The changeup good good arm-side fade during his pre-game warmup, and he could change the look of the pitch by getting on the side of it to make it look more like a cutter.
