Cape Cod League Notebook: July 24

Luke Costello | INF | South Carolina | Bourne Braves 

Costello brings one of the cleaner offensive operations in the Cape, featuring a simple, direct swing that allows him to consistently get the barrel out front and do damage. He minimizes unnecessary movement, stays on time, and shows the strength to impact the baseball with authority. After a very productive spring hitting .302 with 17 home runs during his sophomore season at Wake Forest, Costello heads to South Carolina as an established middle-of-the-order bat. His combination of present power, offensive consistency, and polished approach should translate well against SEC pitching.  
 

Terry Hayes Jr. | RHP | Ole Miss | Chatham Anglers 

Hayes attacks hitters with a polished four-pitch mix, working 92-94 mph with the fastball while mixing an 88-90 mph cutter, an 82-84 mph slider, and a quality 78-81 mph curveball. The curveball is a platoon-neutral offering with enough shape to throw against hitters from either side, although he primarily deployed it against left-handed hitters during my look. While the delivery features some effort, Hayes is a clean mover who repeats it well and consistently accesses all four pitches. The combination of present stuff, athleticism, and a complete arsenal gives him the foundation to make an immediate impact as he looks to take on a bigger role at Ole Miss.  

Cole Hansen | C | Cal Baptist | Y-D Red Sox 

Hansen is a bounce back catcher/1B from Oklahoma, whose offensive profile is built around a mature approach and advanced swing decisions. He shows advanced feel to hit, controlling at-bats with disciplined swing decisions while displaying the barrel adjustability to consistently stay on pitches. Hansen is coming off an outstanding redshirt freshman season at Cal Baptist, slashing .381/.414/.543 with 11 doubles, 7 home runs, and 48 RBI, earning Freshman All-American honors. His disciplined approach, barrel accuracy, and offensive feel give him the foundation to develop into one of the more intriguing catching prospects in the country if he can project behind the dish at the next level.  

Jordan Stephens | RHP | South Carolina | Wareham Gatemen 

Stephens is a big, athletic right-hander with a clean, smooth operation that allows him to be consistent within his delivery and produce his stuff at minimal effort. He's worked 94-96 mph, touching 97, throughout the summer, showing quality arm speed and the ability to attack hitters in the strike zone, while having been up to 100 mph in the past. His primary secondary is an 82-85 mph slider that consistently generates swing-and-miss, while he also mixed in an intriguing 87-89 mph changeup. Although used sparingly, the changeup features quality shape and enough separation to produce swing-and-miss against left-handed hitters. The combination of an easy operation, top-end velocity, and a quality fastball/slider combination gives Stephens the ingredients to be an impact bullpen arm as he heads to South Carolina.  
 

Jack Bell | INF | Texas A&M | Chatham Anglers 

Bell is a polished infielder with an athletic offensive operation, utilizing a high leg kick that he controls exceptionally well, getting himself into strong positions at the plate. He shows advanced baseball instincts and a mature offensive approach with the stick. Bell is coming off a productive season at TCU, slashing .303/.452/.490 with 6 home runs, 27 RBI, and 39 walks. His disciplined approach, athleticism, and offensive upside give him the foundation to take another step as a hitter, and it'll be worth following to see how his bat translates against SEC pitching at Texas A&M.  

Tate DeRias | RHP | Baylor | Brewster Whitecaps 

DeRias provided an impressive look out of the bullpen, showcasing a power arsenal that immediately stood out. The right-hander worked 94-96 mph with the fastball while pairing it with a sharp 89-90 mph cutter that projects as a legitimate swing-and-miss offering with added depth. He also mixed an 89-90 mph changeup, giving him a quality three-pitch mix in the brief look. After making multiple starts during his sophomore season at Miami before coming up to the Cape, DeRias brings a talented arm with present stuff that gives him the potential to become an important piece at Baylor.  


Jax Gimenez | OF/INF | Oregon | Hyannis Harbor Hawks 

Gimenez is an athletic switch-hitter whose versatility and feel for the barrel stand out immediately. He looks comfortable from both sides of the plate, showing similar rhythm, balance, and timing while collecting hits from both sides during my looks. After serving in a limited role as a freshman, Gimenez broke out as a sophomore, slashing .283/.472/.440 with 34 walks to 32 strikeouts, demonstrating an advanced approach and on-base ability. His combination of switch-hitting versatility, disciplined at-bats, and defensive flexibility gives him an intriguing profile moving forward.  

Logan Pikur | RHP | Michigan State | Falmouth Commodores 

Pikur is a lean, projectable right-hander whose best days are still ahead of him. He worked 89-92 mph with a sinking fastball that generates consistent ground-ball contact. He paired it with a mid-80s cutter that complemented the fastball well, while his 80-82 mph changeup showed plenty of downward action and arm-side run, giving him a legitimate weapon to generate swing-and-miss against left-handed hitters. Despite the present stuff, there still appears to be untapped velocity remaining if he can improve the efficiency of his upper half. With a projectable frame and room for added velocity, Pikur has the ingredients to take another step forward.

Year in and year out when the best young talent from across the country is packed into one national-level event the arms tend to win the week. That feels especially true in today’s amateur game where velocity, pitch design and high-level training in general are being introduced earlier than ever, allowing young pitchers to develop impactful stuff at a faster rate than younger hitters can consistently catch up to it. The Underclass Area Code Games are no exception and this year there was no shortage of arms that made you stop and take notice.
