Physical/Setup

There aren’t many players in the prep class as naturally strong as Gavin Fien and it starts with his physical profile. It’s a long and strong athletic build with present definition and lean muscle that is packed on for a player under the age of 18. He is long levered with a strong frame and good sized lower half. Fien is explosive in the box thanks to his open and balanced stance and shorter stride into contact. There is a good rhythm and a slight hand tilt at the top of his load with a deep coil. From there, explosiveness takes over with raw bat speed and leverage to his barrel. Fien has begun lifting balls out front and producing tons of backspin, showing more of a direct path over the summer. He’s a natural athlete who hits the breaks with little wasted movement in the swing with such direct impact. It’s impressive to watch such raw, violet impact. 

Tools

Fien’s tools are beginning to be at the top of class discussion. He has plus power that plays to the deepest parts of the yard with immense carry off his bat. It’s a plus arm that will stick to a corner at the next level, though he has played a bit all over this winter and early spring between third and corner outfield. He’s a good athlete with significant hit and power upside that not many in the prep class can match. Fien has shown consistent contact rates and great plate coverage with a very polished K rate at premier prep circuit events. Combine that with significant impact, as it is triple-digit exit velocities and top-of-class prep impact and acceleration rates. He’s consistently on the barrel with a good ability to work line-to-line and absolutely punish mistakes to the pull side. The pure raw strength in his swing is geared for damage and the backspin that is beginning to show out on the more premier circuits. Fien is an average athlete with a real feel to hit and significant raw power that’s tapped into consistently. His bat is a true calling card while the defensive ability can be handled to third or a corner outfield spot at the next level with soft hands and more than enough arm to hold his own. There are a lot of “6s” on this calling card here with bat-to-ball skill and polish.

“The Buzz”

Fien has really torn the cover off this fall, winter and now leading into the spring with major eyes and decision makers in attendance. He’s been lighting up the field at Area Code select, punishing top prep arms and his knack for the barrel and defensive versatility have been true calling cards. Fien can easily push his way into early-to-mid first round projection at this stage, though it’s early. But he’s placed himself amongst the top tier talent in the prep class and has a huge upward arrow as we get into the thick of the spring. Fien’s performance on the PG circuit capped him a National invitation which led to becoming a Perfect Game All-American where he put on a show in BP and later on in game action. There may not be a prep player at this stage who has done more for their stock this early than Fien. 

Summation

A real hit/power tool set combined with some defensive versatility at the next level is very enticing, and Fien checks those boxes. The plus power and just raw brute strength is on full display right now and his overall polish at the plate is becoming amongst some of the best in the class. The plus arm strength and solid athlete he is, with soft hands that can stick it to a corner while being a middle-order producer at the highest level. Fien’s on a torrid start to his spring, though it dates back into 2024, as he’s seeing it well at the right time with the right eyes in attendance. Overall, don’t be surprised to hear Fien’s name called early in Round 1 come July.

The draft cycle is officially in full swing. With the college season nearing postseason play and high school baseball underway across the country, the board is beginning to shift in a major way. Over the past month, a number of players have significantly altered their stock, whether by continuing dominant spring performances or showing improved tools that warrant a jump. That movement was evident throughout our latest Top-400 update, which featured several notable jumps across the board. Here’s a look at the biggest risers from the newest rankings update. Southeast Memorial Day East Cobb Baseball will welcome more than 100 teams spanning the 13-17u age groups this weekend as summer baseball gets underway with the highly anticipated PG Southeast Memorial Day Classic, commencing on Thursday, May 21st. This weekend’s annual premier event will feature 11 nationally ranked teams across the five age groups with the No. 9 16u East Cobb Astros headlining the 17u division alongside top prospects such as No. 11 ranked Bryan Johnson Jr. And No. 22 ranked Georgia Tech commit, Malachi Butler. May 19th Perfect Game/Co-Players of the Week:  Carson Tinney, C, Texas  The Texas Longhorns just finished off another stellar regular season and are heading to Hoover for the SEC Conference Tournament as the No. 2 Seed this week.  To secure their 2nd place finish, they had to sweep Missouri at home last weekend and did so in large part to the power bat of Carson Tinney.  The 6-4/240 catcher from Castle Pines, CO transferred to Austin after two sensational seasons at Notre Dame and has thrived in his draft year.  In the 3-game set, Tinney collected 7 hits in 13 at-bats, scoring 5 runs, with a double, 3 home runs and he drove in 10 runs all told.  With some of the most prodigious power in the college game this year, Tinney is now slashing .321/.695/.473 with 10 doubles an incredible 20 home runs and 54 RBIs while playing in the most spacious ballpark in the...
