PG Draft Spotlight: Carson Brumbaugh

Frame/Setup

Most prep shortstops can be described as a “wiry, athletic frame” of some sort with ample amounts of physical projection left. In a good sense, Brumbaugh is the opposite in the way as he has what some can say a “country strong” frame with well-filled proportional strength. He’s got a strong build, filled lower half and definition throughout. It doesn’t impede his athleticism or feel for the game either, especially in the box. The metrics and ability stand out, and it starts with his two-part setup. It’s a slightly open stance with a deep coil to the backside complemented by a hanging leg trigger. The hands are high and there is a present wrap to the load as a means to stay behind the ball. His hands and load upstairs can be “active” on the surface with an upright tilt, but the athleticism makes up for the parts as it works in rhythm and delivers the barrel with authority. There is some timing to iron out, but the path is direct and he knows how to gain ground force from the bottom up. 



Tools

Simply put, Brumbaugh has tools and is an innate athlete with twitch and the makings of right-handed power at short. Let’s start with the defense, highlighted with a plus arm that will fit on the left side at the next level. But more impressive is the ease to his game at the six. The defense is crisp with easy up the middle actions and hands, combined with a low slot carry arm action. If the frame kicks him over to third, he can handle it, but he’s every bit the shortstop and we believe he can flat out pick it. The run tool may grade out to average, but there’s a natural feel for being at the right place and right time. The athleticism stands out at the plate with bat speed that can fit an org’s model in every facet. He’s a high end accelerator and rotational force with makings right-handed power at a premium position. There is legitimate thump in the exit velocity department with explosive barrel speed and a line driven swing that doesn’t sell for lift or pop to one part of the field. He can turn and burn, or spray gaps and go the other way. Brumbaugh can very well be mid-to-upper-90s on the bump too, and if it all clicks there’s considerable hit/power upside at shortstop. Rare in any facet, especially at the prep level. 

“The Buzz” 

Brumbaugh battled injury and didn’t perform much on the summer circuit and didn’t really get much time to find a rhythm after a very loud 2023. However, a healthy Brumbaugh can very well be well into the early day draft selections, steering him away from an Arkansas commitment. The tools are that loud. As with any prep, he will really have to show a capable and polished bat-to-ball skill but there is potential for that to very well happen. The power can really make a presence as he naturally hits the ball hard with numbers to back it up, and the defense is high end. Consistency will obviously be key here, but Brumbaugh is a ball player in every facet. He understands the game at a high level, but also can be the athletic tester for some orgs to wrap their arms around. 

Summation

The tools, athleticism and IQ jump off the page at points with Brumbaugh and there should be considerable interest heading into the spring. This past summer circuit we may not have seen it all come together, but that can very well be the case at Edmond High. He impacts the game in a number of facets and he’s an exciting prospect. The spring will obviously dictate a ton to his direction, but it’s safe to say we are very bullish on what he can become as a finished product. It’s rare to find that type of power potential with every chance to stick at short at the highest level. The upside is considerable.

The landscape of the MLB Draft continues to evolve each and every year. What teams value at the top of the draft can change based on the strength of a particular class, shifts in player development philosophy, and, perhaps most importantly, the way organizations evaluate risk and upside. Some trends are subtle, while others become impossible to ignore when viewed across multiple years. For this study, I set out to answer one question: What player profiles do teams value at the top of the draft? To answer it, I analyzed the Top-100 picks from each of the last six drafts (2021-2026). That gives us 600 total selections to examine and provides a large enough sample to identify both the profiles that have remained consistently popular and those that have gained or lost significant ground. 2027 Top 100 Draft Board  Current Favorite: SS Dylan Seward, Norco HS (Calif.) In our first iteration of the 2027 Draft Board, Norco shortstop Dylan Seward ranks No. 1 overall. The switch-hitter is an ultra-twitchy player with a lot to like on both sides of the ball. He is a supreme athlete that should stick up the middle. Fifty-Four teams, competing across three divisions in the 14u - 18u age classifications opened up our Fall schedule playing in a five game showcase style format. For the several college coaches in attendance, they were able to get quality looks at numerous uncommitted 27’ and 28’ graduation year class athletes, as well as having the opportunity to watch some of the quality younger athletes as they put their talent on display.
