Heuer Fans 13, Dominates Over 5

On Sunday, June 4, Texas Tech commit Jeffrey "Mac" Heuer toed the rubber for the Tg D-Backs Scout Team and threw a 9-0, 5 inning shutout against the Nelson Baseball School. Throwing consistently in the 93-97 mph range, Heuer struck out 13 of Nelson’s batters, allowing only two hits and walking none. 


“It's a good feeling, especially when you have a team like this," Heuer said after their semifinal win on Sunday. “You just try to do your part and get to the next game, but it was a good day.” 



The class of 2023 graduate, and right-handed pitcher, was invited alongside other top players in the country, to play at the 2022 PG National Showcase, where he topped out at 94 mph. This season, Heuer has continued working on building his arm strength and has currently been topping out at 97 mph.  

“Really just a lot of long toss,” Heuer said on how he has built up his velocity. “Just being careful with (my arm) and not overthrowing. My coaches have all been really good about not overthrowing me, so that's been a big help.” 

When asked about his decision to commit to Texas Tech, Heuer said, “The coaching staff for sure (helped make the decision). I mean, I thought they were second to none whenever I went out there on a visit and then it was just the connection with the pitching coach Matt Gardner.”    

With the MLB Draft coming up in July there is also the question of if this is a potential path for Heuer.  

“Either way, I'm happy for whatever comes next,” Heuer said. “I'm really looking forward to the next chapter and I'm not really going one way or the other. I just kind of want to see what happens and roll with the punches.” 

Heuer’s stand out performance on Sunday morning sent the Tg D-Backs to the semifinals of the 18u Southeast Elite Championship against the eXposure 17u National team. The D-Backs got the bats going quickly in the top of the first, scoring five of their 13 runs on the afternoon. Landon Stripling stood out offensively, going long for the D-Backs twice, drilling two shots over the fence.  


Despite the strong offensive power from the D-Backs, eXposure was able to rally in the seventh inning, scoring nine runs, narrowing the lead 13-12. Although both teams attacked at the plate all afternoon, Heuer and the D-Backs were able to take away the win and now head to the 18u championship.    

“Just (need to) keep working out and getting my body fine-tuned,” Heuer said. “That's the biggest thing for me moving forward.”
