Pierce Coppola (2021, Verona, N.J.) quickly opened eyes during the recent Perfect Game National Showcase, showing plenty of intrigue with his present abilities as well as with his long-term projection. At 6-8, 215 pounds the physical projection is obvious with the Virginia commit as is his overall athleticism as he does an excellent job of controlling his long limbs which led to a barrage of strikes Friday morning.

Coppola took the hill for the first time since National and he proved to be just as sharp, working a quick two inning stint in which he recorded all six outs via strikeout, doing so as though he were playing a game of catch. Given his arm slot and general length, Coppola is able to generate significant angle and plane on his fastball which worked comfortably in the 89-92 mph range and missed several bats in the process…11 of them to be exact. He pitched exclusively off of his fastball and only once reached a three ball count, maintaining the life to his arm side while simply overpowering the opposing hitters.

Seeing the velocity hold steady and the plethora of strikes are two key takeaways and though he didn’t show his off speed in game, Coppola continues to establish himself as one of the top arms in the class with sky high upside. There’s no doubting that he’ll be monitored closely throughout the summer each and every time he takes the mound.
