2019 MLB Mock Draft Version 4

Mock Draft Version 1 | Mock Draft Version 2Mock Draft Version 3MLB Draft Preview Index

With draft day upon us here is our last attempt at projecting the first 41 picks of the 2019 MLB Draft.

1. Baltimore Orioles | Adley Rutschman, C, Oregon State
The general consensus throughout the industry is that the Orioles will stand pat with Rutschman as the first overall pick. There have been rumors about Bobby Witt Jr, or a possible underslot deal, but the Orioles will likely grab the top player on the board.

2. Kansas City Royals | Bobby Witt Jr, SS, Colleyville Heritage HS (Texas)
The Royals are all-in on Witt and he would likely be the pick even if they had the first pick overall. They would take Rutschman if Witt is gone but things will get intersting quickly if someone other than Witt and Rutschman is taken with the first pick.

3. Chicago White Sox | Andrew Vaughn, 1B, California
The White Sox have been very in on Georgia prep shortstop CJ Abrams as of late but we believe they’ll keep with their track record and take one of the best pure hitters in the draft. They haven’t taken a prep player first since 2012 and other college bats like JJ Bleday or Hunter Bishop could be in play too.

4. Miami Marlins | JJ Bleday, of, Vanderbilt
Bleday is in the midst of a national title run and the new Marlins scouting department will look to make their first impression with the Vandy outfielder. The Marlins have been rumored to be in on Abrams and have at some point or another been linked to most of the consensus top seven prospects.

5. Detroit Tigers | Riley Greene, OF, Hagerty High School (Fla.)
The belief is that the Tigers would jump on Vaughn or Bleday if they were on the board but they’re also very in on Riley Greene, the best prep bat in the class. The Tigers like TCU lefty Nick Lodolo as far as arms go and have also done their homework on Bishop and Bryson Stott.

6. San Diego Padres | CJ Abrams, SS, Blessed Trinity Catholic HS (Ga.)
The Padres would love if Greene were to get to this pick but they’re also enamored with Abrams, who fits their track record of high-upside and athletic prep prospects. They’ll take a hard look at Lodolo too, though they haven’t taken a college player first since Cal Quantrill in 2016.

7. Cincinnati Reds | Nick Lodolo, LHP, TCU
Lodolo is the top pitcher on the board and the Reds will look to add some pitching talent to the system. They’ve been scouting the top college bats in hoping they’ll fall, along with guys like Hunter Bishop and Shea Langeliers, whom they like as well.

8. Texas Rangers | Josh Jung, 3b, Texas Tech
Jung is one of the best pure hitters in the draft and a name the Rangers won’t pass up, especially if they can save some money for a later pick. They’ve been tied heavily to Bishop, Corbin Carroll and Brett Baty among others.

9. Atlanta Braves | Hunter Bishop, of, Arizona State
The Braves have long coveted Bishop who checks in as one of the best pure athletes in the draft class. Atlanta has also been tied to power college arms like Alek Manoah and Jackson Rutledge while they could also be a fit if Abrams falls.

10. San Francisco Giants | Alek Manoah, rhp, West Virginia
The general consensus is that the Giants want to go relatively safe with the first pick in a new regime and Manoah is the best college arm on the board. Bryson Stott would also be a natural fit as we’ve mocked him to San Francisco before.

11. Toronto Blue Jays | Jackson Rutledge, rhp, San Jacinto
Toronto has been tied to nearly all the top college arms and would also be prepared if anyone in the top 6-7 were to fall. Rutledge is the pick here but they’ve also been interested in Carroll and are seen as the possible floor on Manoah.

12. New York Mets | Zack Thompson, LHP, Kentucky
The Mets have been very in on Carroll and would seem like a high upside pick for the new regime to make a splash with. Outside of Carroll the focus has been college arms with Thompson being the pick and Elon’s George Kirby also being in the mix.

13. Minnesota Twins | Shea Langeliers, c, Baylor
The Twins have been enamored with college prospects with their first pick, perhaps looking to cut an underslot deal and overpay a prep player in the comp round. Langeliers could easily go higher than this given his hot streak while a guy like Jung would also be a fit if he doesn’t go earlier. This could also be a spot for a top college arm if one slides.

14. Philadelphia Phillies | Bryson Stott, ss, UNLV
Stott is No. 5 on our board and the Phillies have been linked to college players all spring. There’s a chance that the pick is Alabama prep infielder Gunnar Henderson with an underslot deal, however college prospects are the more likely pick with Stott being the best of them.

15. Los Angeles Angels | Keoni Cavaco, 3b, Eastlake HS (Calif.)
The Angels are known to prefer prep athletes and Cavaco has jumped up boards this spring with the combination of athleticism, raw power and strength. He’ll pair nicely with Jorydn Adams and Jo Adell in the system while Corbin Carroll could be an option at this pick as well.

16. Arizona Diamondbacks | Corbin Carroll, of, Lakeside HS (Wash.)
No one really knows what the Diamondbacks are going to do with their large bonus pool and number of selections, but this should be Carroll’s floor. Look for the Diamondbacks to take a mix of high priced preps and safe college players.

17. Washington Nationals | Matt Allan, RHP, Seminole HS (Fla.)
Allan is known to have a high bonus demand and the Nationals have never shied away from that in the past. Here the Nationals will grab the pitcher who many consider to be the top prep arm in the class.

18. Pittsburgh Pirates | Quinn Priester, rhp, Cary-Grove HS (Ill.)
The Pirates have been tied to Priester for several weeks as he fits their preference for high-ceiling and athletic prep arms. He’s quickly risen this spring and the argument can be made that he’s the top prep arm in the class.

19. St. Louis Cardinals | George Kirby, rhp, Elon
The Cardinals would likely be overjoyed if Kirby falls to 19 given his tremendous track record of strike throwing and present stuff. Others to consider here are Brennan Malone and a handful of college position prospects.

20. Seattle Mariners | Greg Jones, ss, UNC Wilimington
Potentially the best athlete in the class, Jones has flown up boards and the Mariners are right in the mix in terms of teams targeting him. The Mariners have also been heavily tied to N.J. prep shortstop Anthony Volpe and they’re considered the floor for Kirby.

21. Atlanta Braves | Brett Baty, 3B, Lake Travis HS (Texas)
Baty is in play seemingly as many as 10-15 spots higher than this and, despite his advanced age, is viewed as one of the best prep bats in the class. Baty pairs well with Bishop and Atlanta has been tied to other toolsy prospects and high-priced preps.

22. Tampa Bay Rays | Gunnar Henderson, SS, John T. Morgan Academy (Ala.)
Henderson has shot up boards and the Rays have been all over high school shortstops with upside. The Rays have a multitude of picks to work with and they might not be able to afford to wait to take Henderson with their next pick as he’s in play starting in the teens.

23. Colorado Rockies | Kameron Misner, of, Missouri
The Rockies are all over college bats and this could be a spot for Michael Busch or Will Wilson. Misner’s SEC numbers have been concerning but he’s absolutely loaded with tools and upside that will work nicely at Coors Field.

24. Cleveland Indians | Michael Busch, 1b, North Carolina
The Indians are believed to prefer college bats with this pick and Busch would line up well with their preference. This could also be a sport for Will Wilson or Georgia prep righthander Daniel Espino as well.

25. Los Angeles Dodgers | Kody Hoese, 3b, Tulane
Hoese has flown up boards this spring with excellent production numbers and tools to match. This is a value match as well as a preference match, though Hoese could be in play quite a bit higher than this.

26. Arizona Diamondbacks | Will Wilson, ss, NC State
After going for a high upside prep, the Diamondbacks could play it safe at 26. Wilson doesn’t have a loud tool-set but will be able to hit and play up the middle, and this pick wouldn’t affect their ability to pay later in the draft.

27. Chicago Cubs | Logan Davidson, ss, Clemson
This is likely Hoese’s floor but with him off the board the Cubs stay in the college ranks and grab Davidson, who’s athletic and toolsy with big raw power. Prep arms including Espino and Texas prep JJ Goss are also in play here.

28. Milwaukee Brewers | JJ Goss, RHP, Cypress Ranch HS (Texas)
The Brewers are believed to prefer high ceiling prep arms and Goss fits that description well. He’s had velocity into the upper-90s with a hammer breaking ball and the other prep arms are also in play including Josh Wolf.

29. Oakland Athletics | Seth Johnson, rhp, Campbell
Johnson is seemingly in play starting early in the 20s and has both more upside and risk than a traditional college arm. This could very well be the floor for Greg Jones as well.

30. New York Yankees | Anthony Volpe, SS, Delbarton HS (N.J.)
The Yankees and Volpe have been tied together for weeks, and while he’s considered to be a tough sign, the Yankees haven’t shied away from paying prep talent before. They’ve also been tied to his Volpe’s teammate Jack Leiter with this pick.

31. Los Angeles Dodgers | Brennan Malone, rhp, IMG Academy (Fla.)
After taking a big college performer at 25, the Dodgers could go with a high ceiling prep arm here and Malone fits the bill. This could also be a continuation of a run on prep infielders such as Matthew Lugo or Nasim Nunez.

32. Houston Astros | Daniel Espino, Georgia Premier Academy
The prep pitcher with arguably the best pure stuff in the class, the Astros have had plenty of opportunities to see Espino at his best. They’d be thrilled if he’s still available and Espino will be in play anywhere from the teens to this pick.

33. Arizona Diamondbacks | Josh Wolf, RHP, St. Thomas HS (Texas)
After going relatively safe at 33, the Diamondbacks could go pure upside and overslot a prep arm like Josh Wolf. He’s come on hard this spring with a fastball into the upper-90s and his upside is vast.

34. Arizona Diamondbacks | Maurice Hampton, of, Memphis University HS (Tenn.)
One of the highest ceiling prep players in the class, Hampton’s stock is a bit hard to pin down, however this would be a good spot for a team to overpay the highly athletic two-sport prospect and the Diamondbacks are as good a bet as any to do it.

35. Miami Marlins | Bryce Osmond, rhp, Jenks HS (Okla.)
After getting one of the best hitters in the draft with Bleday at No. 4, the Marlins could grab an very athletic, high upside prep arm and Bryce Osmond would fit. He’s been a two-way player in high school but his future is on the mound with a mid-90s heater, fast arm and biting slider.

36. Tampa Bay Rays | Matthew Lugo, ss, Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy (Puerto Rico)
Tampa has been tied to numerous prep shortstops and Lugo might be the most well rounded of the group. Even after taking Henderson at 22, Lugo’s upside might be too hard to pass up and the Rays have the creativity and picks to make it happen.

37. Pittsburgh Pirates | Noah Song, rhp, Navy
Song is definitively a first round talent based on ability, but with question marks about his ability to sign his stock is a bit of a question mark. As an added bonus, the Pirates should be able to save money here, as Song is a senior, to help Pittsburgh meet Priester’s price tag.

38. New York Yankees | Drey Jameson, rhp, Ball State
Jameson is objectively undersized, but the arm speed, stuff and overall upside can’t be ignored. Jameson’s upside is hard to ignore and the Yankees have also been tied to Florida prep third baseman Tyler Callihan.

39. Minnesota Twins | Ethan Small, lhp, Mississippi State
Small has arguably been college baseball’s most dominant pitcher over the course of the season and was named the SEC Pitcher of the Year as a result. The Twins have also been linked to the second tier of college arms with this pick such as UCLA’s Ryan Garcia and Arkansas’ Isaiah Campbell.

40. Tampa Bay Rays | Blake Walston, lhp, New Hanover HS (N.C.)
Walston has been one of the biggest draft risers all spring and he could be in play higher than this. The Rays have money to play with and could swing for the fences with three of the highest upside prep players in the class.

41. Texas Rangers | Brady McConnell, ss, Florida
McConnell performed at a very high level this spring, finally tapping into the upside that many projected when he was a prep. He could be in play higher than this, and knowing how the Rangers value tools and athleticism, this could be a good fit.

PG Draft: Mid-Major Picks to Click

Tyler Henninger
Article Image
While Power 4 prospects tend to soak up the bulk of the industry buzz, there’s plenty of legitimate talent lurking at the mid-major level. These are competitive programs that are loaded with players who have real tools, physicality, and performance track records that translate beyond their conference. Below are nine mid-major prospects we expect evaluators to be in early and often on this spring. Ethan Norby, LHP, East Carolina (Rank: 155) Norby is an undersized left-hander, but has produced strong numbers over two years at ECU. The left-hander has produced a 3.80 ERA with 182 strikeouts over 149 1/3 innings. While the velocity does not stand out, Norby can still miss bats with the heater. It works in the low-90’s and creeps towards 95 mph at times. Quality extension for his size and high spin allow that offering to get on hitters, resulting in weak contact as well as whiffs....

California All Region & Top Tools

The 2026 class is one of the best in recent memory for the state of California, with 18 players ranking among the top 100 in the Perfect Game national rankings.  Three PG All-Americans, IF Trey Ebel, OF Isaiah Hearn and RHP Logan Georges were all edged out of places on the California All-Region Team as a result.  And although the 2027 class doesn’t look as deep, it does feature three Top Six players in SS Dylan Seward, LHP Jared Grindlinger and SS Carter Hadnot. Not surprisingly, California high schools are very well represented in the Perfect Game Pre-Season Top 50 rankings, particularly with 2025 Trinity League champion St. John Bosco beginning the season as the top ranked team in the country.  A very deep Orange Lutheran squad holds down the third spot in the rankings, with 12th ranked De La Salle being the top team from Northern California.  Corona (17th),...

Georgia has its usual depth of high-level athletes and Perfect Game All-Americans, although three 2027 players did make the All-Region team.  There are an unusual number of two-way prospects among the All-Region players, a testament to the big arms that the state has right now. Two Georgia high schools are ranked in the top 10 of the PG Pre-Season High School Top 50 rankings and the Georgia high school ranks are annually among the most competitive in the country.  Etowah is the highest ranked team at 5th overall, while Blessed Trinity Catholic checks in at 8th.  Parkview is the only other Georgia team in the top 50, holding down the 34th spot.   OF-RHP Dexter McCleon Jr will be fixture on the Georgia All-Region team for the next two years but the top ranked prospect in the 2028 class will have to take a back seat to his elders this year.  McCleon’s absurd...

Baseball Meets Hollywood For Great Cause

BASEBALL MEETS HOLLYWOOD FOR A GREAT CAUSE    There’s no crying in baseball, but there is laughing, and there was lots and lots of it -- for a great cause -- last Saturday night in Hollywood, California. Perfect Game and its Believe in Baseball Foundation assembled a star-studded cast of comics and guests for the inaugural “In the Spirit of the Game” dinner and auction. The event was held at the iconic Laugh Factory, a historic venue that, in baseball terms, would be equivalent to Dodger Stadium or Wrigley Field. Late-night superstar Jay Leno took a turn on stage. So did comedic aces Tiffany Haddish, Nikki Glaser, Dustin Ybarra and Gary Cannon. “It was 4 ½ hours of straight laughter,” said PG commissioner Dennis Gilbert, still beaming a couple of days later. “It was a really nice success.” No one kept score at the event, but...
